Stanford Recruits/Players Drafted Under Harbaugh

Submitted by mgoDAB on

Fellas,

I haven't seen anything like this on the board yet so I composed something I thought you would all enjoy. I put together a list of Stanford players selected in the NFL Draft who played for Harbaugh, was recruited by Harbaugh, or both. I used 247 recruiting info. If a player has a year next to his recruiting info (e.g. 2008), that means he was recruitied under Harbaugh. Jim played at least some role in the 2007 and 2011 classes, while having a total role for the 2008-2010 classes. If no class is written, the player was not recruited by Jim but played for him.

It would make an interesting set of graphs.  Not only did he trend toward getting more guys into the NFL throughout his tenure, he got them in better and better rounds too.

The man can develop players.

Know of any teams that are on the doorstep talent-wise but just need some player development to put them over the top?

They should take a look at this crazy Harbaugh guy.

What stands out to me is the variety of positions these players play. I knew Harbaugh had developed plenty of offensive linemen and tight ends at Stanford. But there are quite a few WRs and defensive players on the list as well, which I wouldn't necessarily have expected.

Speaking of variety - In 2010, Owen Marecic was the only guy in the FBS to start on both sides of the ball, as a FB and LB. Against Notre Dame, he even scored a rushing TD and had a pick-6. Then to cap it all off, he was selected for the Pat Hornung Award, given to the most versatile player in CFB.

Not to mention, Marecic being drafted in the 4th round is pretty darn good for a FB nowadays. Can't imagine more than maybe a few others at the position have gone higher in the past decade.
*One possible caveat about the relatively high selection, however: drafted by the Browns.

Feed this man some guys like Rashan Gary and other consensus 5 stars and we'll win national championships just like they do at Alabama and other elite programs. elite coaching plus elite recruiting equals titles

FWIW, Harbaugh's QB at the University of San Diego, Josh Johnson, was also drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 draft. For those unfamiliar, USD is an FCS level program that does not have players drafted that often, so both player and coach deserve praise. Also, it was the start of the Harbaugh as college QB guru buzz, probably a key part in landing Andrew Luck etc etc.

Great post, this is really interesting info you compiled here. This is an incredible list for a place that historically does not have many NFLers or prime time talent. Talk about a culture change.

Where's the recruit stalker, Rivals/Scout/247 dude to reply with some statistically insignificant rant about how '4-star' recruits are .3% more likely to be an NFL draft pick than a '3-star' ...? Anyone.?? Good. #HARBAUGH

Jesus. Look at all the Tight Ends on that list. What the hell was Chris Clark thinking dropping his commitment to M when Harbaugh replaced Hoke?

is the amount of 2 and 3 star guys turned into high draft picks. Knowing how many 4-5 star guys Michigan recruited under Hoke who haven't lived up to their potential gives me hope for a quick turnaround this year and the next.

The number of Tight Ends really jumps out to me, at 4. And when you think about his yearly teams at Stanford, it does seem like he always did have a solid TE. Jake Butt is next.

RB's and Offensive Linemen are no surprise. He was getting big time production from his running backs and if he can make Toby Gerhart a Heisman conidate, imagine what he potentially can do with elite RB recruits like Derrick Green and Ty Issac...

Really like the idea of recruiting on a national level. Harbaugh never landed consistently huge recruits, but his recruits did come from all over the country as opposed to mainly just the west coast. And so far he's done just that at Michigan by digging into pipelines that are not just in the midwest. I will admit, i thought there would have been more of a west coast flavor to our recruiting classes, but it seems the success has been more in the south and SEC country, thanks to Durkin. Of the two classes so far he's had 6 kids from Florida and 3 from Alabama. (the 3 Bama kids all from power Pratville)

Wouldn't David Shaw get more love for the '13 to '15 draft, for developlment purposes? Obviously JH recruited them, props to that, but he wasn't around for the bulk of the '14 and '15 draftees.

You are correct. '14 and '15 were definitely Shaw's guys. '13 the credit is half and half since those players played for Harbaugh for 2 years and Shaw for 2 years with a slight edge to Shaw because they played their Junior and Senior seasons with him.
However, I wanted to include all of these guys because JH would have had at least some influence with that player.
