Spartan players charged with Assault...

I know we hate Spartan threads, but it is breaking news. Spartan players charged with assault... EDITED: So you can choose to bypass the freep.com link and use the detnews.com one instead. However, I like it because it provides more proof that they are idiots when you take into account their most recent article regarding the players' parents. http://www.detnews.com/article/20091209/SPORTS0202/912090427/Nine-MSU-f… http://freep.com/article/20091209/SPORTS07/91209048/1398/9-MSU-players-…

"Enraged," "outraged," "astonished," "digusted," etc. That's more like it. That said, OF COURSE the Free Press would cover it. I'm not that, uh, jaded. But what gets me is that even when the Free Press is caught speeding, caught red-freaking-handed in a butchered stroy like the "hurricane" story, you seem to want to give the benefit of any doubt to the Free Press. In the case of the "hurricane" story, there just wasn't any doubt. Mark Snyder had to go out of his way to turn that out of context quotation into a quasi-national kerfuffle for Rich Rodriguez. We have seen the freaking video! I sort of expect that perhaps you see nothing wrong or curious about the Freep's use of anonymous-sourcing for the August 30 story. That you saw nothing wrong with the Freep's concerted effort to spring the August 30 story on the football staff and the Athletic Department only at the last possible moment before going to print. That you think the Freep accurately posed teh serious questions about Countable Athletically Related Activities. And that somehow, we should be able to make sense out of the fact that Freshmen Je'Ron Stokes and Brandin Hawthorne didn't want anonymity (because they didn't "fear" any "retribution"!?!), but that former players, long gone from Michigan did fear retribution and therefore got anonymity. Lot of sense that one makes. To anyone who still stands by the Free Press, I ask, WTF? Support for the Freep cannot even be squared with, "Well, let's all just wait for the results of the investigation." Becuase the Freep didn't wait for any steenkin' investigation. The Freep went straight to print, and only then did they even start requesting documents from the Athletic Department. I know that, for a fact, because I FOIA'd the Free Press' own FOIAs directed to the University. It was a malevolent story, evidencing some the reporters' own malevolence. I ask you again, Bando, why would you offer any defense of the Free Press?

I find it amazing how worked up you repeatedly get about the Free Press. I'm not defending them, but I'm also not getting so worked up that I spend my time writing emotional, long-winded vitriol against a couple of local reporters every day of the week on a sports blog. I'm holding my verdict on the series of articles until the NCAA completes their investigation. If it finds no wrongdoing, well, you'll see me just as outraged as everyone else. It seems, however, they have found something of interest, or else they wouldn't still be in Ann Arbor right now. The Free Press doesn't exist to blow sunshine about Michigan football, though they've done a LOT of that in the past. Journalism has a responsibility to uncover wrongdoing, no matter how uncomfortable that may make us. I'm not saying they have a responsibility to do what the Freep did, but they do have a responsibility to report if they have reason to believe there is something worth uncovering. What would have happened if a couple young and intrepid news reporters hadn't looked into the car crash that occurred on M14 during Mateen Cleaves' recruiting visit to A2? I'm sorry, I just find the whole "DON'T CLICK THE LINKS!" stuff to be a bit much. Take a deep breath, calm down, it's going to be OK. It's just a newspaper.

My problem with the Free Press is not that it delivers bad news, or that it is somehow too honest, or insufficiently loyal to Michigan. My problem with the Free Press is that their methods suck. The August story was a provocation, and a badly-done one at that. The Free Press deserves some severe criticism. And it seems to me that it is actually hard to find outlets that air that kind of criticism. I'll debate, if what you want is debate. Mind you, Rosenberg and Snyder won't debate.

There was UNDERAGE DRINKING going on at Cedarfest!!! So much worse than conspiracy and assault. Those regular students should have known better than to go to an annual event at their University...

Anyone care to set up odds on whether or not players are reinstated before their bowl? Or if any jail sentences are postponed until after their bowl?

wants to prove a point to his team, he has to either suspend these kids for the bowl game and all of next year or kick them off of the team now... he screwed shit up by letting winston back on the team which probably gave the indication to other players that they get one free pass.

Sitting in the library right now and a Sparty grad came up to me a few minutes ago to inform me of the charges and that "they have nothing on them." I politely shook my head and said what a great job Mark D is doing with the team, his response, "at least we beat you guys this year." Typical Sparty, more concerned with M than their own team.

Free Press, 12/10/09: "The fact that these kids are charged with Conspiracy AND the crime they conspired to commit (assualt and/or battery) means the crimes committed were done after an agreement between these players. It takes teamwork and a family-bond to conspire to commit a crime. And it takes heart and dedication to not let your team/family down by giving up... to fulfil that agreement to assault and batter. These kids obviously stick up for each other... like a real family. D'Antonio is responsible for this unity, this team pride, this family." "An unnamed source, a 2009 transfer from Michigan's 2008 team stated: 'At UM, we'd try to conspire to beat up chics all the time, but our team was weak with no leadership or pride. No family values. I'd show up at Newberry to kick ass, turn around, and you know what... my whole team was no where to be seen. Pussies.'"

I'd show up at Newberry to kick ass, turn around, and you know what... my whole team was no where to be seen. And then I remembered that they were probably all working out since that's what we always did, 18 hours a day, everyday -- otherwise Coach Rod and Barwis would beat us.'

They will be forced to sit at least one series in next year's opener against Montana State. Maybe even an entire quarter!! Seriously, doesn't the university have the right to force students to withdraw(i.e., KICK THEM OUT) if they are facing a criminal indictment that was committed on campus? Why isn't the MSU nation screaming outrage, demanding that these kids be expelled? I liked that they were man-enough to wear ski-masks during the beating. Hahaha. Classic.

After all the crap I have had to put up with from MSU buddies over the past two years, it is going to be a long time until I let them forget about this little "incident"

Some time its very rewarding to go to such a crappy school like MSU, if these were UofM players it would be brought to national spotlight. But because MSU is a piece of crap university only local outlets are aware it exists

linky "In addition to the six-month jail sentence, Winston will serve two years of probation and pay $1,768.43 in fines and court costs. Winston also is required to complete an assaultive behavior and substance abuse counseling program and must submit to random drug and alcohol tests."
