Softball beats CMU, 5-2
In the final non-conference game of the regular season and final mid-week game against a MAC opponent, Michigan took on CMU at Alumni Field. Pretty impressive crowd given it was a mid-week game against a MAC team.
The two teams were supposed to play last season at Mt. Pleasant, but that game was cancelled due to rain so today was the first meeting since 2014.
The first three innings for Michigan consisted of nothing but pop-ups, it seemed. Michigan went up 1-0 in the 3rd inning, but it was on a wild pitch.
In the next inning, Si-Lo hit an RBI double to score Ramirez to make it 2-0 Michigan.
After a 1-2-3 5th inning by Driesenga, Tera Blanco homered to bump the lead to 3-0. However, Michigan would pop out and ground out the next two at-bats.
CMU cut into the lead in the 6th by scoring on a bobbled ball, which shouldn't have happened because the leadoff batter not only interfered with Blanco's ability to make the play at 1B, but the ball clearly bounced off her foot which should've been called a foul ball.
Michigan responded in the bottom of the 6th with a 2-run shot by Si-Lo to make it a 5-1 Michigan lead.
CMU made it somewhat interesting in the 7th by loading the bases with none out, but Michigan only gave up a run in the inning to end it quietly.
Michigan wins 5-2.
The score looked close and the bases were loaded in the 7th, but it never felt like we were in any danger of this game getting away. Driesenga had 7 Ks on the day. I thought Blanco should've gotten the start just to get her some time but clearly it was a great decision by Hutch as we needed her to be outstanding today.
Michigan is now 38-4 with a 15-2 B1G record. Michigan will head to PSU for a weekend series with the first game being on Friday at 6pm.
I have a cousin-in-law who played SB at CMU...her family is also a bunch of bucks fans. I like them most of the time, but sometimes they're insufferable. But I plan on letting her know about this one...rubbing it in big time.
was we won the game despite not playing particularly well. The pitching the last few weeks has improved but todays game felt like the team wasnt focused. There were mental errors throughout.
2 things Ive noticed this year. With Betsa and Driesenga once the opponents gets a run breaking the shoutout they seem to struggle for the rest of that inning..Have to fix that.
Also as good as we are and should be I sometimes wonder how "Hungry" they are. Last year they seemed hungry every game. This year not so much. Maybe they are saving it for the tournament...lets hope so. I wonder if expectations are so high that its not quite as much fun as last year..
we are VERY VERY Good. we SHOULD compete for the National Title but they have to want it bad! and stay focused..Today they werent
Not a good game but we still did win by 3. We should have a better offensive output on friday.

It's getting to the point where a victory in seven innings seems like a loss. The CMU pitcher did a good job of getting us to swing under high pitches and popping them up.

Is CMU any good?
CMU is under .500 in the MAC.
I'd grade today's effort as a B- overall. Driesenga, Lawrence, and Ramirez all get an A, maybe Blanco too. Romo gets a bit of a pass as she was pitched around all day. Way, way too many pop ups, and the defense just wasn't crisp. Forgettable game, re-focus on what matters - the Big Ten race & finishing the regular season strong. On to PSU.
