Soft schedule? Stats padding? Both? Other?
I know stats affect who is chosen to win the Heisman. Andre Ware is the poster child for that factoid (I know many of you don't even know who that is, but some of us know exactly who it is and why I associate his name with stats and the Heisman). So stats are giving CJ Stroud a leg up in the Heisman odds right now. But these following numbers beg some questions. Do you have any questions about these numbers?

18? Wow. Does Stroud get paid by TDs?

Ryan Day is trying to sell "explosive" for CFP position-jousting.

I thought Ty Detmer was the poster child of a stats Heisman
November 16th, 2022 at 8:30 AM ^
Detmer's BYU teams were generally better than Houston; the year Detmer won the Heisman, they actually beat a good Miami (YTM) team when that meant something. Ware's Houston teams beat up on worse teams (like SMU, 95-21) and their best win was against 9-3 Texas Tech.
Ware wound up getting drafted in the first round by the (sigh) Detroit Lions and turned out to be a bust. Detmer was drafted in the late rounds by Green Bay and wound up as a journeyman/backup and (despite his time in Detroit) had a better pro career than Ware.

15+ is still defensible until you're inside the final few minutes. I'd add 7 before calling it garbage, at least in the first half. I am NOT defending the guy and yes they are clearly padding the stats. Everyone does it. That's part of why big game performance is still considered.

When the next person has 11 less TDs, that seems like a lot.

*fewer 😉

Obligatory:

Well considering that ~37% of Bo Nix's total TDs come on the ground compared to 0% of Stroud's TDs, it seems like a very cherry-picked stat overall.

CJ puts up video game passing numbers. The man has 78 TDs and 10 INTs in his career, so I'm sure he's padding his stats in blowouts, but their offense in general puts up crazy numbers.
November 16th, 2022 at 3:33 AM ^
Have you compared those "video game" numbers to Drake Maye or Caleb Williams though?
November 15th, 2022 at 9:29 PM ^
Why would people not know Andre Ware?
OSU is a passing team. They beat up on bad teams. They are up 15 points early on in many cases (Northwestern excepted). Should they start taking a knee in the third quarter in a two score game?
We give Corum the ball from the 1 yard line four straight times if we have to.
I'm sorry that Bo Nix's defense isn't able to stop anybody, I guess?

Andre Ware was quite a while ago man. I mean, it wasn’t as long ago as the MSU v Kentucky game started but it’s been a while.

OK, time for a bit of education:
Just don't look up his NFL career....

Lee Corso and Beano Cook looking like, well, old men, tbh.

There are two versions of CJ, the one before Thanksgiving, and the one after. I am excited to face the one after Thanksgiving.

Indiana. Stroud throws 3 TDs after they are up 28-7
Iowa. Stroud throws 4 TDs after they are up 26-10
MSU. Stroud throws 3 TDs after they are up 28-13
Rutgers. Only one after up 35-10.
Wisconsin. 3 after up 31-7
Toledo. 4 TDs after up 21-7
Arkansas St. 3 after up 31-9 (including one with 4 seconds left.)
November 15th, 2022 at 10:33 PM ^
Using this tweet's arbitrary metric, Ohio State was "up by 15+ points" by...
- Arkansas State: 4:24 minutes left in the SECOND quarter
- Toledo: 7:16 minutes left in the SECOND quarter
- Wisconsin: 3:55 minutes left in the FIRST quarter
- Rutgers: 0:48 seconds in the SECOND quarter
- MSU: 7:05 minutes left in the SECOND quarter
- Iowa: 3:25 minutes left in the SECOND quarter
- Indiana: 2:37 minutes left in the FIRST quarter
This tweet is implying that Ohio State should have cleared their benches, and played backups before halftime in these games.
November 15th, 2022 at 10:38 PM ^
Yeah. This tweet was pretty terrible. I gather the OP is into sharing terrible tweets.
November 16th, 2022 at 12:16 AM ^
It is not implied that the benches should have been cleared for all 18. Others on the list had 7 also.
November 16th, 2022 at 6:41 AM ^
Yea, and they've played plenty of football in closer games as well as losses. Can't throw a TD pass up by 15+ points when you're rarely up by 15+ points.

Not really, it's more implying that your run offense would basically just milk the clock

(including one with 4 seconds left.)
That would be stats padding.

Ohio State didn't score in the 4th quarter.

I stand corrected. It was 4 seconds left in the third.

Beating up a cupcake can feel great, at first..
That said, I'm not overly impressed that your high powered offense continues to throw long after the opponents defense has been deflated and given up on a game that's "over".
November 16th, 2022 at 6:47 AM ^
I wonder what the totals would be if they only counted the tds in the 4th quarter. I don’t necessarily want to defend stroud or day, but passing is their offense and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen where stroud has gone out of many games towards the end of the third or beginning of the 4th quarter. My guess is that the numbers would be a lot closer.
November 16th, 2022 at 9:21 AM ^
Given how banged up their RBs have been this season it's not all that surprising and it doesn't help that most of the B1G is trash outside of the big-two this year.
It'd be interesting to see what his stats looked like against an SEC conference schedule, although then you'd have to say the same thing about our offense and Corum.
November 16th, 2022 at 10:15 AM ^
15+ points is a kinda dumb place to draw the line. With that being said half of Stroud's TD's come when OSU is leading by 21+ which is a lot more striking if you're going to make the stat padding argument
