It's no longer speculation at this point.

I didn't think so but after this it seems inevitable. Pitt is embarrassing them
Ok, here is a thought. I know Weiss gives us a great chance to win every time we play them, but tonight I was rooting for him to lose. Just like we are a traditional powerhouse, Notre Dame is too. If they get a good coach that makes them better, fine. It brings more to our rivalry. Maybe we can get back to playing each other with a 2-0 record every year.
It's the same thing with OSU. I have friends that want us to be better to bring more to the greatest rivalry in sports. There is not doubt that they love the winning streak, but they also love the battle of two great teams.
So, for this thread, get rid of Charley Weiss, and let's get these programs going in the right direction.
PS Ohio State can have fun with Oregon.
We'd both be 1-0 going into it, right?
He will have some big pants to fill.
that was good...guess it won't be Lou Holtz
This deserves +30, but I can only +1.
I want to see it happen, and I've already done my part.
they still have to play Stanford
...until the front-butt sings.
I have a theory. Let's call it the Walk This Way Theory.
Aerosmith, after having great success in the 70s, was horrible in the early 80s. They were heading for Nazareth's career path, but then in 1986 they filmed the "Walk This Way" video with Run DMC. Run DMC was one of the top rap acts back then, and the video was a huge hit. Since that video, Aerosmith's career took off to even higher heights, while Run DMC faded away.
So, Wannstedt was a hot assistant with Jimmy Johnson. Then a head coach in the NFL, not very successful. Then head coach at Pitt, not very successful. But, at the end of a losing 2007 season, Wannstedt's Pitt Panthers beat Rodriguez's then-undefeated Mountaineers. RichRod then bolts for U-M.
Since then, Wannstedt has gone 9-4 and is likely to go 9-1 so far this year. Meanwhile, we know what's happened with Rodriguez's record. So, did Wannstedt steal RichRod's mojo? Can RichRod get it back?
(whoops! Tate just returned the punt. Maybe the mojo is en route?)
(hey, Cinnamon Girl is ABC's bumper music. Sweet!)
West Virginia was not undefeated before they lost to Pitt in 07.
Interesting tin-foil hat conspiracy theory though.
Although I don't know why he'd want to go there when he could go just about anywhere right now. One guy I don't hear enough is Mike Leach. Both of those guys can do more with less. And they want more money.
But, may I suggest Ron Zook, ND? Pleeeeease?
Probably because it's Notre Dame and he can make a ton of money and pick up good talent. The same reason Urban Meyer called it his dream coaching job a while back...
Nah. We're going to hire Zook as some sort of assistant or coach so he can help with recruiting.
Just when I say that they score two touchdowns, one on a kick return which is basically individual effort. I hope they win and Weis stays.
Root for them.
Yes, just for tonight I'm rooting for ND.
Some ND insider on Rivals radio earlier this week was suggesting Gary Patterson of TCU, Brian Kelly of Cincy or Petersen of Boise St. He said Gruden is unlikely because of the steep price tag on top of buying out Weiss. I really hope Weiss stays though.
Motherfu....it's not over yet. ND staying in the game AGAIN. Someone put them away!
I know he said he would never return to the NFL, but I read that as an interest in college football, since he would have said he would never coach again.
Brian Kelly would probably be the front runner at this point, but you never know with guys like Urban Meyer. There are many coaches on the college level who probably has an out-clause whenever a notre dame job is open.
As a Steelers fan, this would make me vomit.
I don't think the Irish faithful will be happy with another NFL guy.
is not that he was from the NFL. It's that he was never a head coach before, and he's CW. Cower or Gruden would do quite well, I think.
The interesting thing to me is that after Bob Davie and Ty Willingham, it was very important to get a guy with strong ties to ND. Charlie has that covered, but most of the favorites to replace him are just the opposite. Its all about winning, period.
Wow, I don't know about that call. Looked like a forward pass all the way to me.
intentional grounding maybe, FB no way. I hate when refs decide games like these. Its been a shitty year all around in CF - bad playing, bad refs, just sucks.
Especially when it happens to ND. They already blame any loss on the refs, this won't do anything to shut them up.
waste a timeout, then they review the play and pitt gets the ball
the job will be Urban Meyer's if he wants it. Next in line would be Brian Kelly. After that, who knows.
I would steer away from guys like Patterson and Peterson who have been at their non-BCS schools for a while and been successful. The track record of those type guys going to big-time programs is not stellar. Hawkins, Franchionie, etc.
Maybe George O'Leary? He better start polishing up his resume.
Meyer came from Utah and Tressel from Youngstown state, so I don't understand your point about smaller coaches moving up. Some do well, some don't.
Fumble? I think not.
They'll look at Kelly, and my guess is that he'll bite if they make it appealing (like say they'll loosen the academics a bit for recruits). He's a guy riding a wave of success, and while I doubt he'll experience the same level of success at ND as he has at Cincy, ND faithful are probably just hoping for 9- or 10-win seasons and legitimate bowls for the foreseeable future. Kelly would be able to put that together, especially if Clausen comes back.
Meyer is not going to leave Florida for ND unless they just blow him away with money, and I think Florida will match. Plus, if he goes to ND he will always be in the shadow of others and their expectations; with Florida, he is already a god and will continue to field NC challengers well into the future.
I really don't think Clausen will come back next year, especially if Weis is gone, for a couple of reasons:
1. When he committed to Notre Dame, he mentioned doing solely for the purpose of playing in the NFL.
2. They will lose at least three, maybe four, of their offensive lineman after this year, and I don't think he wants to come back next year and take a beating in the pocket like he did his freshman year.
3. The two leading candidates seem to be Kelly or Meyer, neither of whom run offenses that play to Clausen's strengths.
But you never know...
I agree that Clausen might not come back, but at the same time he might not like his draft position and it wouldn't be the worst idea to come back to college and put up some numbers.
I agree that the offensive line might be a major factor in leaving, but it looks like they have some depth on that line, unlike a couple of years ago when he was getting hammered on each pass attempt.
And as for picking ND to play to NFL, that pipeline has been pretty dry since the mid-90's. To be fair, if you are a good QB and want to make it to the NFL, play at some random non-BCS school or back up a high-school sensation who struggles at baseball.
I think he came to Notre Dame because he bought into the lie that Charlie Weis made Tom Brady into who he is. He thought Weis would make him NFL-ready.
If you look at the draft, I think he will be the top QB in this year's draft, if he comes out early. Teams will be skeptical with Bradford's injury, Tebow has some skeptics as well, and McCoy hasn't shown great consistency. We won't really know until the combines and all the other stuff before the draft, but I think he will think he could be the top QB taken, which isn't really saying a whole lot this year. I could be wrong.
The line might have some depth, but they really haven't been all that impressive this year and next year's line will be even less experienced.
As I said, I might be wrong about all this, but it seems to me like there is a good chance Clausen won't be back next year, especially if Weis is gone.
I agree Clausen will be gone. Hard for him to see much value in another year there with Weis gone.
Kelly seems like a safe choice, Meyer brings a lot more intrigue.
What on earth does that mean? If any school can get Meyer, that is clearly a safe choice.
Now, ND won't be able to hire Meyer so maybe that's what you mean. Going after Kelly is a safe choice because he'll leave Cincy for ND but Meyer might turn them down?
He went to Iowa, was a DC under Spurrier at FL and could be wearing out his welcome in Norman.
Also, I know it's a stretch, but what about Skip...wait for it...Holtz? Does daddy have any pull in SB?
...his Daddy does have some pull but I can't see Skip Holtz. The alumni won't stand for that - they will have to shoot higher.
Stoops is fine where he is. Essentially two season-long injuries to arguably the two top offensive players in the country is a pretty good excuse. The probability that he goes to Notre dame is that of Urban Meyer. Slim to none.
The probability that he goes to Notre dame is that of Urban Meyer. Slim to none.
thats not what I am hearing, and its coming from some highly trusted friends
Probabilty of which is not zero, according to some highly trusted friends.
Stoops I was much more skeptical a few days ago but for all anyone knows it is more likely to be someone no one has even talked about
I don't follow Big XII too closely, but from what I've gathered Bob can get you to the big game, but you need Bob + Mike to win the big game.
Well, what are you hearing? As an OU fan in Michigan I'm a little out of the loop.
It sounds like stoops has put his own name out there, not like Gruden has but more in the background, again it is still coming from ND fans so TIFWIW
Yeah, all theories and candidates should be taken with a grain of salt if they are proposed by anyone other than the athletic department. Stoops was mentioned for this job, but never was a candidate for whatever reason. Rodriguez wasn't really on many people's radar also. Take that for what you will.
exactly odds would have it that the 5-6 names that everyone keeps talking about are not even relevant. Just hope the whole process isnt drawn out.
From what I've heard, its become pretty clear over the last week: the number one name on the list is Kelly, number 2 is Gruden. The ND brass definitely does not want to look beyond those two. There is absolutely 0 chance it is Petersen or Patterson. zero.
"There is absolutely 0 chance it is Petersen or Patterson. zero."
Why does Notre Dame hate Scandinavian coaches?? Knute Rockne was Swedish for crying out loud!
