Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The super Sophomore is up for the USA Collegiate Softball National Player of the Year.

No Michigan player has ever won the award. Jennie Ritter was a top-3 finalist in 2005.

Sierra has some ridiculous statistics, but I don't know all that much about softball. Should she be the favorite to win or no? The other two candidates are pitchers, which also makes it difficult to compare.

Based on her athleticism and her impact in major games, she a contender.

The main reason I would figure she is there is because she is a sophomore shortstop with a .500 batting average as a righty power hitter and she's leading 3 NCAA hitting categories. That's practically unheard of.

The last game I watched her play, they charged an error to her that was subjectively given based on the fact that she had made the exact same difficult play twice before. Never mind the fact that she's probably the only one who can do it. She has one hopped out of a back-hand off her back foot to make a cross throw to first. Incredible athleticism.

Pitchers do a lot of work and rack up a lot of stats, and they typically have the most direct impact on a game. Romero being included on the finalist roster as a non-pitcher is a total

Ugh... I hate the Heisman so much.

The Heisman is just College Football's POY award.  Every sport has a POY award.

Anyward...

Sierra Romero is the real deal and this is nice confirmation of that.  Those of you unaware: There's something special going on at Alumni Field this year.  Romero may be the best ever to don the Maize and Blue when her career is finished.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about softball.

Is there a professional women’s softball league or is the Olympics pretty much the highest they can go?

In the spirit of pililng on...Jim Abbott also won the Sullivan Award as the nation's top amatuer athlete.  (As did Michael Phelps.  We claim him, right?)

My formative baseball years fell during Jim's time with the Angels, so I remember him, but does anyone else stop and think about how amazing his accomplishments were? I didn't realize he was a Golden Spikes Award winner. Someone should produce a 30 for 30 on his story.
