Shea Patterson Senior Year Highlights

Fuck it, let's jump the gun:

Takeaways:

  • He can throw the ball good.
  • He's got a little Johnny Manziel to him, but with better measurables (2 inches taller) and hopefully not a drug problem.
  • Like half of his completions were TE seam routes which is right up our alley.
  • Back to the Manziel comparison, but he seemed really adept at making something happen with his feet when protection breaks down while keeping his eyes downfield. That's something that would be of particular value here, since our pass pro may still be shaky next year.

Im all for improving the QB spot instantly as 2018 and 2019 are /ouryears/. Must win Big/make playoffs and then hopefully win a title.

Only thing Im worried about is how this WILL negatively affect QB recruitment in the future. Kind of feels dirty to block Peters again.Im sure Dcaf also wouldnt be pleased. But I know its about winning

If UM wins big on the big stage and Patterson (or Peters) gets first day draft grades (as you would expect) then the best QBs will be lining up for a shot to be the next guy. Which isnt to say that some feathers will not be ruffled..but the message has to be clear Harbaugh isn't here to come in second (or third..or..) He's in AA to win Championships, something that hasn't happened in a long time and that is only going to happen if he can get the QB and Oline up to par with the national powers in a hurry.

I think the mentality of a kid like Peters, who knows he's good, wouldn't be offended by this.  It's competition.  It doesn't mean he's out of a job, just that he would have to win it.  He's young and once the ball gets rolling qb's aren't likely to start until they're juniors or seniors anyway.

I see this viewpoint/take a lot and am amazed each time. Have you looked at the QB depth chart for next year? Did you not just see two UM starting QB’s suffer injuries that sidelined them this past season? Jim Harbaugh sure did. The last concern of anyone should be hurting some feelings, other than the entire team if you don’t do everything in your power as head coach to improve the program. And BP is not “blocked” at all, nor is anyone on that roster, other than by their own performance.

Given our OL we will  need 3 QBs who can start next season (since Wilton left we need that 3rd starter). Next summer let the QB who wins the competition between Shea, Brandon and Dylan to start. I kind of think that Dylan will win our next summer. But in any case who ever wins the starting spot will dramatically upgrade our QB performance for 2018.

Kid played 2 years in the SEC, anything he did in high school is irrelevant as is his high school recruiting ranking.  Watching his film at Ole Miss is about 100 times more relevant as to what he could be like at Michigan.

It's called "Talk of Champions" and they are talking the Shea Patterson transfer.  They make it sounds like Patterson to Michigan is a done deal - they don't quote sources so take that for what it's worth.

On an interesting note, they said that Greg Little is saying that he wants to stay.  However, they said that he and Shea Patterson are best friends and roommates and they won't be surprised if Shea's transfer changes his mine about leaving.

Normally, I wouldn't engage in wild speculation about the choices of 20 years young adults, but to me, Greg Little would put Michigan into the playoffs in 2018.  OT is the only glaring weakness that Michigan has next year and he is one of the best in the country.

Sorry, had to get that OMG out of the way.

That was incredible, and incredibly fun to watch. I was feeling a little odd because of my support for Peters and interest in seeing McCaffery. But after seeing this - highlight, I know - I want to watch THIS type of QB under Harbaugh.

In fact, I'll say I bet this is the type of QB Harbaugh had always wished he could have been.

This kid looked like he had the WTF gusto of Farve, the action of Michael Vick, with the calm precision of Lord Thomas Brady. Looked up his 247 page, and they sort of agree.

Yeah, that would be fun to watch.

I'm all for taking Patterson if he's interested, if he really is that much of a difference-maker and he's willing to put in the time and effort to earn the job.

What I want more is for the OL to  at least look decent next year. There's no excuse for it not to be at least at that level next year with all the blue-chip talent Harbaugh has brought in there. Save for 2011 and last year's pass pro, the OL has largely been awful ever since Carr left. You take care of the OL and the rest of the offense largely takes care of itself.

Peters/Patterson would have time to survey the field and throw, WRs have time to get open, RBs have lanes to run through. The OL makes everything go.

He’s got a good set of wheels on him. I can see why we’d want him. Although I think it messes up the mojo in the QB room.
He’d be a good fit anywhere. Even UCLA. I doubt he wants to run that much but how awesome would it be to have a MOBILE QB that can actually pass.
I am so sick and tired of watching OSU’s qb’s run around the field when plays break down. It’s been an absolute difference maker for them. And now Sharty has a guy that can run too. Puts a lot of pressure on a D.

Patterson might have a higher "college" ceiling than Peters, but if he comes in and is eligible right away, it will be interesting to see what Harbaugh does with a guy who is a bit of a gunslinger. Or if Patterson can control his natural instincts to make plays and trust the system/scheme to win the job. (Not to mention learning a new system).

If anything, Patterson will make Peters and McCaffrey focus even more this off season. So bring on the competition, but Patterson is not a lock to start depsite his abilities and experience.

Did a little trolling on Ole Miss blogs.  One frequent theme was that Shea's father is known for extreme meddling -- wants to be on the field at practices, publicly criticized the OC, etc.  So I'm assuming that any talk about Patterson coming to Michigan includes Harbaugh laying down the law on this topic.  But here's the intriguing good thing: many Ole Miss commenters assume that if Shea leaves, Greg Little will go with him.  They went to school to play together and remain extremely close.  And Little just happens to be a future Pro Bowl left tackle.

All in all, this is looking potentially very good for the block M.  Let's just hope their lawyer succeeds in getting the waiver to play next year, as most think is likely.
