Shea Patterson to Saskatchewan

Shea Patterson has been around the block once or twice since his time in Ann Arbor. And even before that.

The former five-star who won the MVP of the 2016 Army All-American Bowl got his start at Ole Miss before transferring to Michigan football two years later. He never quite reached the height of his fame on the field and ultimately went undrafted, signing a free-agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs out of college. That didn’t stick, and he headed to the CFL where he played for the Montreal Alouettes. He had a stint in the startup, The Spring League, and then was the first overall draft pick by the expansion USFL league, first starting with the Michigan Panthers before being traded to the New Orleans Breakers.

Now Patterson is on the move again, heading back to the Canadian Football League, as he was signed on Monday by the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

If you're young and can figure out a way to play your sport professionally, I say go for it. It's the fantasy of many and the reality of a few.

Because of the CFL rule that the Defense (Defence) must line up one yard off of the LOS, having a  "Third Down and Short Yardage Running QB" is a thing in that league. He certainly could stay on the roster on that basis.

He gets a lot of crap on here but he never lost to Staee. He brought it both times he played them. I am still convinced if he was on the team in 2020 he would not have lost that game to Staee.

I moved on about the criticism about him after watching Gattis mess up a pre-season 1st round pick in Van Dyke. Shea definitely backtracked pretty badly in 2019 vs. 2018. Kudos to him for beating MSU, actually pretty soundly. First game should have been 21-0 if Evans hadn't dropped the ball inside our 10. Turnovers were his biggest issue, especially lost fumbles.

Good luck to the guy. The only former UM QB I had a hard time rooting for in the pros was Drew Henson. He told Lloyd after the Auburn bowl win he was coming back, only to jump ship for Yankee money in March, leaving us with Navarre, who was not ready for prime time in 2001.

Maybe the humility of not being drafted followed by even being cut/traded by a USFL team may have lit a spark in him that I saw in wins over Wisky, MSU, PSU in mid 2018.

I hope he gets starting QB there.  I would definitely watch whatever team he is QB of.  I liked watching him as QB in the USFL.

Best of luck to Shea, an excellent fellow Wolverine.
