Shane Morris: "not going to let (Rudock) take my job"

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Interesting quote from him at the A4 camp today.

Shane Morris says he sees U-M starting QB job as his to lose. Says he knows Jake Rudock came to take his job, "but I'm not going to let him"

It's not your job at this point, and it really never has been.  There has not been one moment in your time here so far that you've shown you deserve to start at quarteback for Michigan.  If you expect to be the real starter, and not just the default starter because of injury and a thin depth chart, you have a LOT of improving to do.  Don't make the mistake of assuming that you can just keep doing what you've been doing and slide into the job.

It shows a strong competitive fire we need at the QB position.  I've felt that many years here, there just hasn't been enough true competition at the quarterback position.  And sometimes, it's been the case where someone has been "anointed" as the starter which resulted in sub-par performances.   Harbaugh will not let that happen.  And I think that's just one of the many huge upgrades we will see with him as coach.

I believe we are in trouble if Shane is the Qb. I was not impressed with anything he did on the field last year. He has a cannon but that does not do you any good if you have no touch or accuracy.

We really haven't seen much of him to know either way. The accuracy issues have always existed, but it's not like Rudock is a proven winner either. Even Brian, who is a big fan of Rudock, admits he has some limitations.

Competition is good here, and hopefully the best QB wins out. But this team has issues well beyond QB on offense, and I'm not sure any option at the position is the difference between greatness and struggling this year.

Nah you're wrong and too quick to judge. Morris was ridiculously unprepared and has been a part of mediocre offenses with limited talent. Players have shown, QBs included, that a system and coaching can make a hell of a difference and he had not played enough to deserve being written off yet.

We have seen enough, or I have. With a supposed 5 star recruit there should not be this many question marks. Just watching him play is telling enough. It's like the college game is to big for him. This goes back to when he was recruited. Don't you think it's odd that top ten wr's backed off mich after being at camps with him?

I just saw this over at another site comparing Shane in HS to Ruddock:

Shane Morris:    17 tds  8 ints   1340 yards  49% completion    79.34 QB rating

Jake Rudock:    70 tds   8 ints   3729 yards  65% completion   183.59 QB rating

Wow talk about over-freakin-rated.

I love Shane and hope he proves all his naysayers wrong.  Having said that, I am so glad he's not just the presumptive starter by default because there's no one else other than freshmen to battle for the starting spot (and that would go for anybody at QB, not just Shane).  It really is nice to have some competition at the QB position for a change.  What has it been, six years now since there was any true competition for starter at QB?  And then, even if the starter turns out to be really good, the team is screwed if he gets injured or is ineligible for any reason.

I know Shane hasn't done anything yet to make us feel confident with him taking the reigns as QB, but we also have to remember that even though he has struggled severely, he had a paper thin offensive line, and a coaching staff that never proved to improve players from the second they stepped foot on campus. Personally, I love the fact that Shane is going out and saying that he's not going to let the new guy take "his job". Even if it's not "his job" yet, I love the fact that he's confident enough to believe in himself enough to say it. Whether he is the QB this year or not, I trust harbaugh and know the QB will be ready and fully prepared to lead this team.

It's nice to see some fire from these kids. Seems like Hoke sucked the mean spiritedness right out of these kids last couple years. Ready to see some people get pissed off, competitive, cocky....in essence....the swag needs to come back. Shane's comment is a good sign.

I'm glad that he'll finally be putting his trademark cockiness that he's famous for on campus to good use. No sarcasm here, the best football players are cocky assholes.

I think if it is close Rudock will start just do to his past experience but if he does not perform on the field at times I could see Morris stepping in. Though, Morris has the skills to be the cream that rises to the top and take the job this fall!

I wonder what you'd expect him to say if you think it's a lock that Rudock will start.

"You know it's cool working with the ones right now, can't wait for Jake to come in and right the ship though. Just don't want our guys getting too confused because I'm a lefty. I mean we all know Borges can't recruit any QBs that amount to anything. But ahhhh had fun at this passing academy today though, so I got that going for me. You guys see my sweet beard? It's cool right."

Good for him to have the mentality of the Week 1 starter, kid has a rifle and some wheels. Best of luck to him.

I love the attitude.  He is definitely being pushed and sees what is happening.

The same thing with Rudock.  He wants to prove himself once again and earn the job.

Both of these guys want the job, and will have to do everything Harbaugh demands to get the nod.

The big thing some are missing is the winner of the job will have earned the nod from Harbaugh.   That is no small feat.

Because of that , the winner will be prepared and able to meet the demands of Harbaugh.

That should make us happy.

I doubt Malzone will beat out a 5th year senior who has played well and led numerous TD drives in college, but I also dont think this board gives Malzone his just due. Would not be shocked to see him start a game or more for us in the next 5 years.
