Seven Nation Army
I went to the hockey game Friday night and had seats near the alumni pep band. Early in the game the alumni band director addressed the crowd around the band through his bullhorn, which he uses to call out the song names for the band to play, saying, "I heard this song at the football game last week. I don't know what it's called but we're going to play it." They proceeded to play Seven Nation Army.
At the end of the song he asks the crowd, "What's that called?"
Several people shout back, "Seven Nation Army!"
He then asks, "Salvation Army?" but doesn't hear the people trying to correct him.
Jump to later in the game, the director gets up during a break and calls to the band through his bullhorn, "Salvation Army, let's go!"

I wonder if he got done arranging "Salami Nation" yet.
God love that John Wilkins!

For what it's worth, the song is actually called Kernkraft 400 and the band that plays it is called Zombie Nation.

I personally, and many of my friends, hated the alumni band at the game on Friday. They did nothing to get the student section going when we needed something to light a fire in Yost. I would have preferred a high school band that played loud and fast because that's all they can do than a band that may be technically better but can't get anything started. It seems like 1 big hockey game a year we get stuck with this and the atmosphere suffers.

But I agree. It drives me crazy how slowly they play The Victors and Let's Go Blue. I appreciate them being there as no band or a high school band would just suck, but they need to pick up the pace.

Hey, at least the bagpipes were different with the high school band.
In all seriousness, the alumni band really made me miss the hockey band. The alumni band played everything way too slow!

That's kind of funny you guys are making fun of this. The song is actually called Seven Nation Army because as a little kid Jack White could not pronounce Salvation Army, and would always refer to it as the Seven Nation Army. So the screw up is actually why the name is what it is.

I love the original song and I have nothing against the alumni band, but I kind of hate that we've glommed onto it just like every other sporting venue. Not to mention the fact that Penn State and OSU have run it into the ground.

I agree, we could be unique and not play piped in music, but hey if Minnesota and Sparty are doing it, why wouldn't the leaders and best.

While there are some potentially valid reasons to pipe in music at sporting events, the "Minnesota and Sparty are doing it" argument rings a little flat.

on Friday? I found that kind of odd. I know they missed the Sat. night Miami game because of the day football game, but whats up with missing the MSU game?

The entire MMB went on a one-day recruiting/promotional performance trip to the Bands Of America championships in Indianapolis on Friday. Thus, no Hockey Band.
Also, while we're on the topic of Seven Nation Army, if you watched the USC-Stanford game on Saturday you'd notice that they play it ad nauseum at the Coliseum as well.
PSU, OSU, USC... Michigan? Leaders and best!

Why be the leaders and best when you can simply be the followers of the rest?
