SEC Media Days and Ryan Mallett
SEC media days are going on right now in Birmingham, and it's interesting to hear the coaches and media talk about dark horses for the SEC championship, breakout players, teams to watch etc. Outside of Ole Miss, the guy/team that keeps getting mentioned is Mallett. This doesn't seem that noteworthy -- it's just sort of interesting considering he wasn't a worldbeater in his limited time as a frosh at UM, and he hasn't taken a snap yet at ARkansas. It also makes me a little melancholy hearing his name mentioned.
He was a five-star and the top-ranked pro-style QB in the '07 recruiting class, so I'm not surprised he's getting a lot of press. I think he'll probably have a very successful career at Arkansas.
Was in same class as the Emo, who was ranked higher
Claussen was in fact a dual threat qb -- but not in the way you're suggesting. He was a dual threat to pass the ball well, and to develop a bizarre looking case of male-pattern baldness.
He also sings.
Phil steele had him 5th, and his rankings are just a compilation of 8 or so other sources. He was number one in Scout and rivals, don't remember espns, and was probably lower in the other sources he uses.
#2 pro style QB. 2 words: Fightin' Jimmahs.
Ah, of course. Pardon me.
Com'on Big Boutros... you don't get to announce your college destination at the College Football Hall of Fame with the lighting perfectly angled upon your gorgeous Robert-Redford highlighted blonde locks unless you are A#1...
You should have known better.
His conditioning and drinking habits need to not affect performance. He is a party animal, per my son who is currently at UM.
I am actually pulling for him to do well. I would hope that he also finds a way to develop good relationships with his team mates.
has had some alcohol issues at ND too.
Mallett is an idiot. I lived 2 doors down from him Freshman year in the dorm. The man was hammered 95% of the time and usually picking a fight. Glad he's gone
In another post you said you were 25, now you have a son at Michigan?
You are mistaken. 1984... Year I graduated from B School.
He may thrive under Bobby Petrino. I get the impression that Petrino doesn't exactly run a tight ship, and he has had some great passers play for him at Louisville.
I was not a fan after he got into it with Lloyd on the sideline. I'm glad he bailed. That way I wasn't put in the position of having to cheer for a kid that I really can't stand. His ego is huge, his attitude is poor and I predict more trouble for him before it's all said and done at Arkansas. He could have a Ryan Leaf-like career.
to the pressure at Ark when things dont go well... he showed anti-leadership skills at Michigan and he just is not (or was not) and accurate passer.... IMHO, he has an average career at best and will be challenged to keep his poise under fire in the SEC.
Tall, with good field vision, accurate and a rocket arm.
Hope he gets on well with his teammates. He should do quite well at Arkansas.
Accurate? I don't remeber that. He also fumbled numerous snaps and got tons of passes batted down at the line.
He was a true frosh thrown into the fire with Henne was hurt so I guess I cannot go too hard on him.
his accuracy wasnt great but he has everything to be a special QB. He was a true frosh and Henne was the exception to the rule that further proves the rule. Freshman QBs will be inconsistent and take time to learn the college game.
Perfect fit for Patrino's offense.
I'm pretty sure he had less than a 50% completion percentage.
He's also a good 'ol Southern boy who, after a year in the harsh Yankee North, has come home to his Arkansas roots. He's the prodigal Hog!
who is apparently saving himself for marriage.

He's "saving himself" in the traditional sense, but he has gone on the record to say that he loves to bundle:

During the "un-bundling" process?
Who cares what he does with his sex life.
If by accurate, you mean completing 43.3% of his passes while throwing to NFL targets, then yes, Ryan Mallett is deadly accurate.
The guy didn't set the world on fire, but geez, he was a true frosh qb thrown into the fire after Henne got hurt. Assuming we kept the same offense and he had stayed, I think we'd be pretty excited heading into his junior year.
Having said that, I do agree with an earlier post that he'd likely be more Ryan Leaf than OMG Tom Brady
I don't think anyone said he did a poor job for a true freshman, but listing "accuracy" as one of his strengths is very, well, inaccurate. He may ultimately prove to be an accurate passer, but there is no evidence (yet) suggesting that be the case.
ever had this much hype before?
Haha great comment. I had totally forgotten that the coaches said he has the potential to be a great punter.
Not just any coach... but our good friend John L. Smith, Arkansas Special Teams Coordinator.
While he was a true freshman, I think asking for more than 43% completion is fairly reasonable.
