Scouting Report: Andrew Brown
I don't know how many of you have had a chance to watch video of Chesapeake (VA) Oscar Smith defensive tackle Andrew Brown, but it's pretty impressive. He's one of the top few defensive tackles in the 2014 class, if not the best. Michigan is on a long list of early favorites, but obviously there's a long way to go in his recruitment. Anyway, this week's scouting report is on Brown, who would fit really well at 3-tech for Michigan.

Realistically though, what are our chances? Does the coaching staff have any relationships with him? With the offers, it looks like he will be SEC bound.

Chances are pretty slim, in my opinion. But I also thought that about Derrick Green last spring. As far as I know, Michigan's coaching staff does not have any strong pre-existing connections with Brown.

If Brown doesn't come to UVA it'll be a major upset. The UVA coaches have been laying the groundwork for this 2014 class for years now, which is why Blanding is going with such an early decision date. There are three players in the 757 where UVA is just this side of a foregone conclusion and a few more where their chances look as good as anyone else's.

It certainly helps that the defensive line and safeties are coached by Vincent Brown and Anthony Poindexter, respectively. I just have a hard time imagining two legitimate 5-star prospects going to UVA. While I am expecting Blanding to commit to Virginia next week, I have a feeling Brown will end up elsewhere. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

Poindexter is also Brown's lead recruiter (as he is for every prospect out of the Tidewater area.) I think you will be surprised at the quality of class UVA pulls in this year. Barring something totally bizarre, I fully expect Brown will be part of it, and possibly before June 1. There'll probably be all kinds of people casting a suspicious eye at the idea of two five-stars going to UVA, along with some high four-star types like Jamil Kamara (who is the third of the three prospects I mentioned above) but these are relationships that Poindexter and Mike London have been working on for years now.

Virginia is crazy-talented this year.

But if I was a defensive lineman the top school on my list would be MICH. With the way that Hoke and Mattison seem to be able to get the best out of these kids, yeah Michigan is where I'd go.
February 21st, 2013 at 9:22 AM ^
LSU doesn't seem like a bad place to go. Two projected top-15 picks this year in the draft?
February 21st, 2013 at 9:37 AM ^
If I were a top defensive lineman, my top choice would be whoever could get me to the NFL as a high draft pick. Rodriguez didn't put out good defensive linemen, and Mike Martin is Michigan's most elite defensive lineman in the last few years . . . and he was a third-rounder.
I might pick Clemson. Or Nebraska. Or somewhere. But Michigan doesn't have a great track record recently.

I was not aware that Magnus played d-line for Michigan...

Funny, because that's not Magnus. Maybe in his dreams, but not in reality.

Brandon Graham didn't play for Hoke.
February 21st, 2013 at 10:16 AM ^
Sure we don't have a good track record recently, but I wouldn't be surprised to see defensive linemen take a chance on a school that historically produced great NFL talent. Plus, Mattison still has that (to defensive lineman) I coached Haloti Ngata, (to LBs) Ray Lewis, (to DBs) and Ray Lewis.
Seeing the last few classes that we've pulled in, it seems that recruits have realized that this is not the same staff that struggled with pulling in great talent and developing them to NFL ready players.

"But coach, Ray Lewis played linebacker." - DB recruit to Mattison
"I coached a goddamned murderer. Don't think he doesn't owe me a favor or two"
"I'll announce my commitment immediately"

I thought he meant Ed Reed, but your response is classic.
February 21st, 2013 at 11:22 AM ^
Or, the recruits might be smart enough to check out Mattison's track record and realize he coached 18 players who eventually went on to play in the NFL. Mattison > Nebraska and Clemson.

Recruits "might" do just about anything. Usually, however, it seems they latch onto the most recent trend. So if one school has a track record of putting _____________ in the NFL Draft, players of the same position seem to gravitate toward that school. That's partly why Michigan is getting good offensive linemen, why USC gets elite quarterbacks, why Alabama gets good running backs, etc.

Mone and Martin pluggin the middle? Do want plz.
I love how this coaching staff puts emphasis on the OL and DL. I'm perfectly fine with pulling the majority of our elite recruits for trench play.

He should be particularly effective after that year of NFL-level training and coaching.
February 21st, 2013 at 1:12 PM ^
Derp on my part. Meant to type Brown
February 21st, 2013 at 9:57 AM ^
He looks like he would be an excellent addition to the class. I agree with JimBobTressel, I am okay with our higher rated recruits being in the trenches. It's better that way than in reverse, having elite skill position players with a average line. I honestly think Michigan can have both, the emphasis these first few cycles have been exactly where Michigan needed to add depth. I am worried about WR, but it's probably easier to find serviceable guys for those spots than it is to grow all B1G OL and DL from 2-3 star players.
Excellent post, per the usual Magnus.

,but right before and at the beginning of Rich Rod we had some first/second rounders. Brandon Graham, LaMarr Woodley and Alan Branch come to mind.

These players were at MICH when Andrew Brown was in elementary school.

That's really cool that you remember so many things about your favorite team.
I suppose that whole memory thing would be good for Michigan if every single prospect in the entire country grew up as a fan of the Wolverines...

"Their uniformz are sooo awesome! I especially like the bright ones that they wear sometimes for big games!!! OMG! If I was a recruit I'd definitely go to Michigan bcuz of kewl uniformzzz."
I don't see anyone making an argument that's anywhere close to this.

As long as he's good at returning kickoffs and maybe punts, I don't really care whether he plays RB or CB.
February 21st, 2013 at 12:09 PM ^
Brandon Graham, LaMarr Woodley and Alan Branch were not coached by Greg Mattison. One point in this thread was that Michigan has not been putting many DL players in the NFL. What does Mattison have to do with that? He had great talent on the Ravens and a "well adjusted and smart person" could come up with the conclusion that Mattison is great when he has great NFL talent, but is unproven with getting kids into the NFL.

Okay, but why would a kid in Virgina be watching and remembering every single Michigan game? Just because you were a Michigan fan in elementary school doesn't mean one of the best DL recruits in the national is as well.

2 DT's in this next class. Hopefully, we can continue to build some momentum in VA and get DG and Mr. Speight to help recruit some more guys from there.

Not exactly sure other than he was a bad ass who often wore a cowboy hat and put a laser beam equipped anti-missile defense system satellite into space called Star Wars... allegedly!
Wait, strike that Star Wars comment from the record, the civilian population is not aware of this yet.
