Scout Top 100 for 2012
http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=4&yr=2012
Man they are starting earlier and earlier every year. At this rate, we'll have 5 star rankings of 7th grade kids in a few years. Michigan targets of note (love the emphasis on defense):
Jordan Diamond (Chris Bryant's teammate) - OT
Dan O'Brien - DT (local kid, must get)
Chris Wormley - DE (OSU-Michigan battle, we've got to land this kid)
James Ross - MLB (local kid, must get)
Vincent Valentine - DT

This is really early. But are we in serious contention right now for any 5-star RBs for 2012? I haven't heard any from Tom. Just figured that one stud RB for 2011 won't cure our RB issues in this system. Any news?

what RB issues in the system are you referring to exactly?? Aside from HOPEFULLY snaring Dee Hart next year, we will have Cox & Fitz only going into their 3rd year next year, Hopkins into his 2nd...am I missing something?

None of Cox, Fitz, Dee, or Hopkins have done anything at the college level yet. Practice hype doesn't mean a whole lot until it happens on the field and translates to wins. Likely some, or all of these guys will be very productive backs one day, but until it happens you can't automatically assume they will be great. If you have watched the first 2 games this year it is obvious we have some RB issues.

So are you saying you'd rather pin your hopes to a high school junior than Cox, Touissant and Hopkins?
September 13th, 2010 at 10:19 AM ^
It's too early to say we have RB issues. The OL was getting a little beat up against ND and wasn't blocking all that great IMO. I think once RR commits to some more RB designed runs, we will see the RB's emerge more.

I wonder (seriously, I don't know the answer) if our lack of RB production is due to a lack of talent or to a scheme that doesn't give them the ball. I don't think you can expect great RB production when they only get 10 touches per game.

"None of Cox, Fitz, Dee or Hopkins".
Cox = not yet even had a carry in his second year. We don't know.
Fitz = Hasn't carried at ALL. We don't know.
Dee Hart = Might want to let him commit first. Maybe you can judge whether or not he's done anything based on his summer workouts this coming summer.
Hopkins = 1 rush. 1 TD. Yup. Not anything. Dude scored 7 points for M. That's something no matter how you cut it.

If they haven't carried the ball yet, then they haven't done anything. Also, Hopkins' 1 yard rush was great, but that doesn't prove to me he's an elite back either.
It's ridiculous to say that they won't be special, but it's also true that they haven't proven themselves at the college level yet.

We had the entire offensive line, plus Quinton Washington & Will Campbell blocking on that play. I mean, I seriously hope he gets in on that run - which he barely did.
All I'm saying is reading anything into that run is premature.
September 13th, 2010 at 1:06 PM ^
I meant to say the result of the run was great. It's too early to proclaim any of these backs busts or world-beaters.

The second guy listed is an RB from NC with 4.32 speed. We're listed as his 7th choice in a list that is very heavily biased to the South and mid-Atlantic.
September 13th, 2010 at 10:17 AM ^
I don't know if you're trying to say he has us ranked 7th. If so, that's probably not right because that list is just alphabetically listed and not a true indication of where everyone ranks on his list.

but I was talking to a guy who knows the mother of the hairdresser for the girl who's dating his best friend and he said that, in an amazing coincidence, that is also the order that Keith Marshall is currently ranking schools.
September 13th, 2010 at 9:59 AM ^
You're right, my comment was too harsh. I just meant, our system is perfect for explosive speed runners and i expect us to attract alot of top speed backs. I know we currently have solid guys back there and hope to bring in a top guy next year. I'm just talking about bringing in an elite elite guy.

How about that 5'9 RB out of Oklahoma aptly named Barry Sanders. We should get this kid, I heard he was good.
September 13th, 2010 at 10:26 AM ^
I've got a feeling Oklahoma State may have been in touch with him already.
Here's dad in action:

I'm surprised Allen Gant hasn't been given a star rating yet. I thought he was one of the marquee players in the 2012 class, and accordingly, was very well scouted at this point.
September 13th, 2010 at 10:33 AM ^
Eh, the majority of the list was skewed toward offensive skill players. Alot easier to scout them than defensive players. Once Scout 100 or 250 is revised by NLOI day, you'll see more balance between offensive and defensive players.

Of the top 40 listed on the first page, only two list Michigan. I am sure that will change when DROB runs for 400 yards and passes for 300 next week.
