Scholarships for 2011

Submitted by Dreisbach1817 on

Can someone explain exactly how the scholarship conversion works when these guys are transferring?  With JT, Vlad, and now Lalota transferring, how exactly does the NCAA handle these slots?  And how does the NCAA actually apply the Academic Progress Reports (APR) to these scholarships?

And Bottom Line:  Will we recover any of these for 2011?

Since they are leaving the school, Michigan gets to award their scholarships to someone else next year. Although they hurt from an APR perspective, I do not believe Michigan's APR will drop far enough to result in actual penalties, though we could be getting close.

Any unused schalarships for this year (4 unused, plus the 3 recent ones vacated by transfer) can be given to walk-ons (up to the 85 max).  Leach and Kovacs (and I think Grady)were already on scholarship, so, guys such as Primarico (long snapper), maybe the back-up-potentially-starting kicker, Floyd Simmons, Zach Johnson, etc. will be "rewarded" with a 1-yr. schollarship for school year 2010.

2011 will now have 7 unused scholarships to hand out for the recruiting class, along with the 11 seniors (12 if Woolfolk does not return).  18 or 19 as of now.

The wild-card is the 5th year seniors and whether they will be invited back, or, chose to leave after graduation.  Obviously Molk, Huyge, RVB are coming back.  Mike WIlliams, Herron, and Steve Watson hopefully come back, however, there could be an additional 3 scholarships available.

He was injured in spring, and I haven't heard anything on him in a long time.  I know the coaches said he couldn't make it back in time for fall camp.  But he's a RS Junior isn't he?  Maybe he graduates and leaves, but the coaches seemed to like him.  Saw the field in '09, and a depth player if nothing else.

Was not on scholarship, however, I remember RR presser early Spring naming him as a walk-on that would end up with one (like Leach and Kovacs - based on 2009 contributions).

So, not sure if he would be one of the seven walk-ons to receive a scholarship - would be a good story for the Freep to ignore.  "Injured Walk-on receives his expected scholarship"

Also, there should be open scholarships from Dorsey, C. Jones, and Kinnard (I say those two because of their prep school problems). If they don't qualify (obv. for Dorsey) that is 3 more. I think a walk-on would get a 1 year schollie, but it wouldn't be guaranteed for next year (guys like Kovacs are an exception and have earned a full scholarship). We also have to hope the NCAA doesn't take any because of practicegate. As of now, too early to tell, but with normal attrition and barring any unforeseen changes, we could end up with close to a full class.

We will have some extra slots for this coming recruiting class, which is much needed.  The extra spots give us a chance to fill in the lack of depth at a couple much needed positions.

Michigan has a lot of flexibility with how they use those remaining scholarships.  I think Michigan will pick up another defensive lineman or two, and I think we'll grab another cornerback now, also.

We're in much better shape than we were last year, even with all these transfers.
