On Scheduling

Submitted by oakapple on
On various message boards, many people were complaining that this game was on the schedule. Bear in mind, Michigan was coming off of a 3-9 season, and at that point I doubt Martin & Rodriguez wanted to make things any harder on themselves. There are important positives coming out of this game. A lot of reserves got valuable experience, several banged-up players were able to take the day off, and there were no new injuries. If you were going to have what amounted to a bye week, this was the week to have it, with PSU coming in next Saturday. Rodriguez and Martin have made clear that their priority is to have 8 home games in the years when they don't go to South Bend. They made an exception for UConn, but there won't be very many of those. I suspect even Rodriguez would agree that a game this easy doesn't really tell you much about your team. Once Michigan is a national contender again, that will be the time to schedule more difficult opponents. For now, I was glad to have the game against Delaware State.

This was a monetary decision more than even wanting an easy win. Still, scheduling 1AA teams is now the norm instead of taking an open date (or extra open date.) But the NCAA could easily stop this by not allowing the games to count for bowl eligibility...EDIT: or BCS ranking.

They're a Division 1A team that had an open date today. They're 0-6, so they suck and probably would have been an easy win. But at least they would not have been an embarrassingly poor 1AA team. Other than getting the second-and third- and fourth-stringers some action in front of the camera, today's game meant nothing for the rest of the season. Nothing. It has no meaning whatsoever for Penn State. I agree that these games should not count towards bowl eligibility.

Very few teams will agree to always travel to an opponents stadium. With nd always being a home and home, if another non-conference game was home and home, that would potentially reduce the Home games to 6 (YES SIX!!!!) in some years. Boooooooo!
