Rolle going to Oxford

Submitted by LJ on
Since everyone's sick of the most popular "good guy" in college football (TT)--here's another feel good story. Myron Rolle is honoring his Rhodes scholarship and going to Oxford for a year before entering the draft. I could be wrong, but I assume he would have been a fairly high pick had he declared this year. At least we can all agree that this is a good role model for the young players out there. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/ncaa/01/12/florida.state…

BTW, this makes me even more upset that we didn't get him. He would have been a perfect Michigan model athlete. And I hear we could have used some good safety play over the last couple years.

and it is a shame we didn't get him. Rhoades Scholar is pretty much the pinnacle of academic achievement. To earn one while starting in a demanding varsity sport...goddamn. Best of luck to him. Personally, I hope he chucks football in favor of academics/career in medicine. That much intelligence should not be wasted on the football field at the professional level.

Myron is definitely a first-round talent, and his off-field exploits are even more impressive. I was kind of peeved he picked FSU over UM and others for "academic purposes" when FSU is a second-rate school(though I guess they excelled at the program he was looking for), but he's made the most of it and FSU has gotten a SERIOUS image upgrade thanks to him. This is somebody your kids should look up to. Unlike Tebow, whose vocabulary is just above that of a common peasant with his inability to say anything other than the most played out one-liners you've ever heard in sports.

Agreeance all around, indeed. Sometimes I question that kid's rationale though. 1) As we all know he makes the announcement that academics are #1, therefore he chooses Florida State. and 2) Assuming he's considered first-round caliber talent and he can delay the Oxford scholarship thing (both accounts which I believe to be correct), why not have the time of his life in the NFL, then pursue academia? You're telling me that dude's gonna make more money off the bat, AND have more fun pursuing the Medical field instead? BS. He has the rest of his life to become a surgeon. Maybe ten years left to play football for millions.

After Oxford he will have to enter Medical school. There 4 years. Then there's residency, which for surgeons is often 8 years. You really can't make a difference in people's lives as a surgeon until you are like 40, assuming you rush through everything. I think he should do whatever he wants, but society greatly benefits from having people like him around saving lives, research and finding cures, etc. Lawyers like myself are a dime a dozen but academic talent like his is truly special.

but you gotta admire that he is pursuing this dream. I'm guessing he's not allowed to defer the Rhodes for 10 years, but I'm not up to date on my prestigious scholarship rules.

i'm in med school and i'd much rather be rocking people on the football field. pro football = positive income, fame, peak physical form, and women fawning over you. medical school = debt to your eyeballs, becoming miserably out of shape because you are in the hospital 90+ hours a week, and women fawning over you until they realize you are broke. when this dude is doing his first pelvic exam of a foul smelling, infected....well...yea he is going to be KICKING himself!

With a man as seemingly intelligent as he is, I fully believe he understands the life of a doctor is hardly glamorous, especially compared to the NFL. More to the point though is that he is not only interested in the practice of medicine, but one of his main interests and what he will be studying at Oxford is medical anthropology. One of his aspirations is to go back to his family's home nation of the Bahamas and help improve the medical conditions there. This is not the sound of a guy who's going into medicine because he wants to set up a private practice in the Hamptons and sip scotch in his radiology lab. As far as delaying the the scholarship, I believe you can only delay it up to two years.

.......since he was a recruit. I questioned his choice of schools based on his reasoning, but it looks like he made the right choice. I say good luck to the kid in whatever he ends up doing.

Uhhhh, FSU actually had him meet with the Provost and recruited the academic side. We didn't really stress it, just kinda assumed "Hey we're Michigan". Education is what you make of it. Good for him, fuck the NFL, this guy should be able to get into top Med School programs if he chooses to. Surgeons, especially one's that specialize, BANK. The guy that did my grandmother's heart surgery is 45, kids go to Crankbrook, has a Porsche truck for the winter and another for the summer, can only imagine what his wife drives and is building a 10,000 SQ foot house off of Cass Lake.

Hmmm, are you sure he doesn't invest or own multiple private practices? Even those in cardiovascular surgery, which is one of the highest paying medical specialties, do not make nearly 1 million on average. Perhaps close to a million on the high end. Basically even at the highest end of the payscale, that's not nearly enough money to have that sort of lifestyle unless he's investing it or something. Interesting info on the FSU Provost meeting though. Oh, what could've been....

Owns 1 private practice and owns some real estate, dabbles in investing in some businesses and in the market. Also was awarded pretty much a full ride to UM Med which allowed him to graduate pretty much debt free. Come to think of it, it's pretty funny how much time we spent shooting the shit every time I drove her to appts. rather than anything related to her condition.

OT to this thread: That sounds more like it. My uncle is in pediatrics (not very lucrative in general) and owns a private practice but also owns a medical equipment corporation, has real estate, and invests as well. Most of his money is not even from the medical practice.
