Rod Gilmore: Great Color Man
Rod Gilmore did tonight's GMAC Bowl, and he's done a couple other bowl games this post-season. I've watched a couple of his games during the season too, but can't recall whether any were Big 10 games.
Overall, I have to say as a color commentator he is growing on me. I think it's the tone of his voice (almost baseball announcer smooth). Always has a good $0.002 to add and has a few cutting opinions per game (Not Spielman crazy opinions, but on point and not afraid to cut down a play call or soft-play when appropriate).
Any other good/bad opinions of him as an announcer?
Second question: What's his background? College player I assume, where? When? Good/Great?
Either way, has to be 10x better than Pam Ward and Andre Ward...

For those attempting to turn this post into a race related joke, or soap-box on race sensitive double meanings (and an example of what's gone so bad with Political Correctness) can go f#ck themselves.
Enough said on that.

by the jokes about killing hobos? Now race-related jokes are the bee in your bonnet? What do you do for fun?

No... killing hobos is funny. Moreso if you dress them up as clowns first.

He was one of the Cal players on the field for "The Play."
My impression of him is that he is enjoyable and does his homework. I also percieve him as having an undercurrent of glee. Now I know why; inside, he's still laughing at Stanford.

He played for Stanford, not Cal.

also, Dude, "Color man" is not the preferred nomenclature; African American, please...

lacking. As the color guy, he steps into the tone created by the PBP (which I found monotonous enough to change the channel, only to come back just in time to see Troy's FG at the end to send it into OT.
I like Gilmore, so I'm hopin' the OP is correct that he called 'em like he saw them tonight, which would be stating loudly "Who paired me with this Eeyore???"

Unless your with the census dept then negro will work just fine.**
"'Negro' Race Choice On Census Form Sparks Outrage"

**note: i do not not agree with this...just found it shocking that the census would include this on a government form.

as the color guy. It is a shame that some of espn's best talent like him and Ron Franklin don't get better games.

Add me to the list. Why the hell doesn't he get more games? I thought he was fantastic tonight. But maybe thats just because Ive been listening to this FOX travesty for the past 2 days.

I actually like his partner, Tessitore. My biggest (recurring) pet peeve when watching games is the end around vs. reverse vs. double reverse call and he is the only one I've seen who always gets it right. Also, he comes from a boxing background I love watching those fights more than most folk under 70.

Agree that JoeTess does a good job.

I think that they are indeed very good, Tessitore and Gilmore, but that is probably because we've all had to suffer through FOX broadcasts for the past two games. Maybe even Pam Ward would be good? Nahhh.

I wasn't too impressed with the call of last night's game, because for long stretches in the 3rd and 4th quarter, they were breaking down the Texas/Alabama game, hardly paying any attention to the game they were actually calling. I don't give a damn about a game not on, the NBA, or anything like that. Give me analysis of the GMAC bowl that you are watching live. Sure, Gilmore had some great things to say about tonight's game, but my gosh - you aren't calling that game!!!

Not a big fan of Gilmore's but he is far from the most annoying commentator I have heard (Jimmy King despite being a Michigan man and Dick Vitale).
