Risk Day 30 - Our Power Is Reaching Obscene Levels....Let's Raise It Even Higher And Step On Some Buckeye Throats.

Submitted by Michigan CFB R… on April 21st, 2020 at 11:19 AM

These numbers are beautiful. Last night, we had more players than any other team, and we had over 4,500 power, which was nearly 1,000 more power than Ohio State and nearly 2k more power than the next most powerful team, Georgia Tech. Last year we were known for our giant army of 1-stars...this year we're also known for our giant army, but this army has some major firepower. Nearly 40% (!!!) of our army is 3 or 4 stars. That's awesome.

However, I don't want to make the mistake of being content. Let's be frank. We've been STOMPED by Ohio State in football lately. It pisses me off, as I'm sure it does all of you. And it makes me want to crush them whenever we have the opportunity. This is an opportunity. While there's no way to change eighteen year-old minds about where to play college football (DO NOT TWEET AT RECRUITS), or help Michigan's defense guard against those damn crossing routes, we can control whether we go to MichiganCFBRisk.com every day, and we can control whether we allow Ohio State to catch up to our power levels.

I know this is a silly game and the outcome doesn't matter for anything but bragging rights among a very small, very nerdy part of the fanbase. But I don't care, because f*ck Ohio State. I want to beat them, and I want to beat them badly. I want to take all those miserable calls against us by Ohio State fanboy refs and use them as fodder to beat their faces in during a game of Risk while the country is on lockdown and sports are non-existent. I WANT TO WIN SOMETHING.

The hard work is already being done by others (the fancy equations, etc.), so I'm going to do my part to win by going to MichiganCFBRisk.com, getting my assignment, and executing it. And I'm going to do that every day, because consistency will help us prevail. I hope you'll join me in taking this opportunity to batter some Buckeyes, even if it's virtually. Go Blue!

If we have questions about this who should we talk to? My profile says I was "blacklisted for noncompliance" but I don't understand that considering I thought I was always following my daily assignments. I'm a 3 star bordering 4 so I want to make sure I put in my move today and keep my streak alive. Thank you and I apologize if I put in an incorrect move by mistake.

Agreed.  It's best to try to get the issue figured out, but if you're unable to do that, attack a territory currently controlled by Chaos or Ohio State.  Neither of those are ever going to interfere with the master plan.  And, of course, if you do get an assignment, you can (and should) go back and change your move as necessary.

I am filled with a specific kind of pride that Michigan always does really well in things that the fans can directly influence. Charity drives, risk games, whatever. Would I trade it all for a win over OSU? Absolutely. But this does make me proud.

Seems like we're more motivated by revenge than actual good game theory and strategy. Look where all our territories are, they're right next to OSU. The only way that happens is if we're more obsessed with beating them then beating the game.

We bailed out of the Midwest in the beginning of the game to move out to California and establish a base there.

Just because we’re battling Ohio State doesn’t mean the strategy fell by the wayside in the name of revenge.

Ohio State attacked us in the west and we have tried and succeeded to disrupt their base in the northeast to even the playing field.

I'm having trouble understanding how we're only tied for first place in this game when we have had a Substantial lead in star power over the other contenders for many consecutive turns.

We've had about a ~20% star power lead over OSU and ~75% lead over Georgia Tech. If we've had such a consistent lead in star power over several turns, why haven't we been able to build a solid lead in number of territories. Is our fundamental strategy inferior to our opponents? Are the territories in Florida (held by GT) easier to hold because they have less neighbors?

We are directly at war with OSU and A&M. Their star power combined edges us out a bit, but we also have Texas helping us with A&M, so it balances the scale a little bit.

Georgia Tech has done a really good job of staying neutral, so they have been able to claim a region of the map that is free of any serious threat from anyone. And no one wants to go to war with them.

I've been playing/ paying attention to Risk for a couple weeks now and I've had the same question.

You can't just look at individual teams as there are alliances.  We are fighting two of the largest forces in OSU and TAMU and they are allied with others like Stanford and Oklahoma (RIP).

That said, I do think that Georgia Tech, OSU, and TAMU have had more protected territories than we have which allow them to punch above their weight.  We have been fighting a 2-front war and now have a 3-front war on our hands.  I'm not sure that would be a sound strategy in the real world but might work to our advantage in this iteration of Risk as whoever has the most territories after 50 rounds will be the winner.

I'd feel better if we had more protected territories so we wouldn't be stretched so thin but I suppose the flip side to that is that we can strike just about anywhere so we can be more unpredictable.

From what I can tell, earning a r/CFB award is not easy unless you are a current (or former, I think) collegiate football player, coach, referee or member of the media. Absent one of those, you need to either make a material edit to one of the r/CFB pages or contribute to a r/CFB fundraiser. There don't appear to be any active fundraisers.

I'm sure there is a well-thought out strategy and we had some bad luck tonight but can we take a step back and reconsider our strategy?  It does seem as if we are spreading ourselves too thin and that leaves us vulnerable not just to OSU and TAMU but to Nebraska and Texas who are attacking us and can pick up some easy territories because it is hard to defend every territory at once while trying to pick up new territories.

I'd rather sacrifice some territories to have a consolidated block with protected territories.

Wisconsin has half of our star power but they have 20 territories.  10 of those are protected so they don't need to put any resources on them.  Yesterday we had exactly 1 protected territory and now we have 0.
