Rich Rodriguez Craves Better Atmosphere at Michigan Stadium

http://www.annarbor.com/sports/rich-rodriguez-craves-a-better-atmospher… Hey I got this from AnnArbor.com, courtesy of Dave Birkett. I do appreciate the older Alumni and the money they bring to UofM however sometimes they make the Stadium boring and are too old fashioned. Coach Rodriguez wants this to change, face it he's changing Michigan and making it modern. Rodriguez is an innovator and in my opinion, a leader not a follower. When he finally rights this ship I honestly believe the Big Ten will be in UofM's rearview mirror. Edit: A few people were bitching because the story was in the body so I removed it yet there is nothing illegal about that. The same people who are against a fun football game and would like you "down in the front!" to sit on ur hands and shut your trap! Football? There's no fun in football!!

You said what I have been thinking and put it very concisely. I agree with every word you wrote. This is MICHIGAN FOOTBALL. This is not the NFL or some event that needs piped in music. They don't have bands in the NFL and the atmosphere is not the same as college football. College football is unique, the pagentry, sights, sounds and color make it unique. If I want music blaring through speakers, I'll go to a concert. If the band marching into the stadium, the sights, sounds and the atmosphere when the Victors is played doesn't get you jacked up then you maybe you're in the wrong place. The winged helmets, the players touching the banner and the game itself is plenty to get me into the game for the entire game. I am there to take in everything at the game, but most-importantly to watch the game. Like almost all others around me in my section (44) I cheer at the appropriate times. I don't scream throughout the game, my reason for being there is not just make as much noise as possible for 3+ hours. And, I don't jingle keys, EVER. The person next to me is the only one who would hear it anyway. I do wave my hat during kickoffs though. I think 110,000 Maize towels waiving during the game would look pretty cool on TV, how much it would actually affect the results on the field, I don't know.

Never been to the Horseshoe, but I assume it is louder than the Big House. What do they do down there? Is it simply more liquor at tailgates?

You can't even make a comparison. Every fan, even little kids and 100 lb co-eds, are up and cheering on every relevant play. When they run out of voice they stomp their feet and bang on the bleachers. Some people may mock jingling keys, but believe me, when 5, 10, or 20 thousand people get in on it, its like a summer rain. A few drops you'd never notice on your roof. A storm sounds like an over-active air conditioning unit... White noise / Black noise - whatever you call it - makes it harder for the opposing QB to effectively communicate with WR's. On a side note; they do drink for hours before the games. Pre-game starts at 8:30 for a noon game.

Maybe living in columbus has tainted my football philosophy, but every down could result in a touchdown. So long as the game isn't out of reach, if your defense is on the field, your arse should not be on the seat. Their QB should not be able to easily communicate with the split ends. I was at the Miami game this past year, which was far closer than it ever should have been. When they were driving - and passing to that same kid with dreds (sp?) over and over - I tried to get people to stand up and cheer to no avail. The loudest fans I saw were a couple kids in Miami tee shirts. I should not have been able to hear them 10 rows away. I dont mean to be inconsiderate, but something needs to be done. If alumni who have no intention of participating wont acquiesce with the Coach's demand to cheer - persuade them to get involved or get out. They dont like it if you stand because they cant see? Tell them to stand up as well, or go watch it at home on their TV. Sorry - but I guarantee losses make my life worse than most of you.

A) never did I state I want them to win JUST so they dont have to take crap. B) Try living somewhere where everyone is just waiting for you to lose. Every week we lost last year my cubicle was trashed by the time I came in Monday morning. After the App State game the whole thing was filled with packing peanuts. C) Have you met me, do you know I am 'that guy'? D) You sound as ignorant and sterotypical as your average OSU fan, congratulations.
