Red Helmets for OSU against Michigan

Submitted by loyalblue15 on

Print version of the USA today details out the Nike Pro Combat uniforms for the participating teams.  "the Buckeyes will wear red helmets for the first time since the late 1960s"  and "Bill Jones, Ohio State's associate athletics director, says the desgin saultes the red leather-helmeted players of the 1942 Buckeyes team that won the school's first national title."

I know the Nike Pro Combat uniforms were discussed on here already, but I hadn't heard the specifics yet and couldn't find it anywhere else on the board.  Pictures will be up on collegefootball.usatoday.com per the print version at 10:30am, but I can't find anything online saying the same thing to link here.

I guess it could be worse than red helmets....Florida is wearing Gator Skin unis against Georgia and TCU is wearing lizard skin unis against Oregon State.

The red helmets are supposed to look like leather.

Remember the tragic future uniforms NBA teams had awhile back?  I think these will go down in history as an equally bad decision.

Will they still have the bird poop on them? I would hate to imagine the slap in the face to tradition if Ohio ever went out there without their hats being covered with bird poop.

I have a feeling that special uniforms will only serve to motivate opponents.  In the case of a rivalry game such as Michigan/OSU or "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party," gaudy changes to the unis only serve to cheapen the rivalry.  Great rivalry games don't need special uniforms to be great.  Changing uniforms for one game is like an ultimate form of trash talk.

To me, it would be fitting and just for Florida to lose big in their "gatorskin" uniforms and OSU to have their season ruined in their red "leather" helmets.  Each team has one mascot already; there is nothing to be gained by turning the entire team into mascots.

So they go from celebrating a milestone 44th anniversary team last year, to celebrating a milestone 68th anniversary team this year.

<smashes everything in sight, throws stuff, screams SCREW YOU LOSE ALREADY YOU S.O.B'S!!!!, returns to keyboard>

Uh huh, that makes sense for them.

I don't think this is terrible. They actually wore red helmets back then, so it seems alright. What say we wear throwbacks for the... oh- what? We had the same helmets back then?

I don't understand the ANGAR. They wore red helmets in the past, as recently as 1967. Just because it's all YOU know doesn't mean it's something evil.
