Red Berenson interview:
Berenson is about to play in a late morning game for the University of Michigan 65s at the 36th annual Snoopy Senior World Hockey Tournament...

I know how we got Red and it tells again in the article, a little bit if I didn't. But still, how was Michigan ever fortunate enough to get this guy? As a player, back as a coach, still back as a coach...
I adore Red, but I'll admit that every once in a while, I fall into the, "Well, he is getting kinda old..." trap. Then things like this come out, all the time and I want 27 more years.
I didn't attend any of the games last week (Michigan alumni fielded teams in two age brackets), but I've seen Berenson play a few times in past years at Snoopy's Home Ice. He's one of the highlights of the tournament, both on the ice and at the tourney's social events. He's still got plenty of NHL moves. He's also been known to protest--humorously--any game schedule that interferes with his dinner plans.
By the way, last year at least, the University of Michigan 65+ team was, in truth, a team of alumni and friends. There was even a former Spartan that skated with an M on his chest. Nevertheless, the crowd sang the "Victors" after every Michigan goal, and there were a lot of goals in the drubbing I witnessed.
It's all great fun. If you ever find yourself wine tasting in Sonoma County in early July, be sure to stay sober enough for Michigan hockey.
Great hockey minds are great hockey minds forever, even if the body isn't what it used to be. Watching Red and Bob Nystrom team up on the old-timers team at the alumni games a few years back was a thing of beauty. Those guys were leaps and bounds the best players on the ice on instincts alone.
Major claims to fame: red was on the first ever dream team when Canada took on the soviets in the Summit Series in 1972.
they failed to mention anything about his legendary backhand shot, Berenson is felt widely to possess the most wicked backhand in the history of the NHL. Why don't we have a Red Baron t-shirt in the mgostore?
If you want to see Red Berenson play, you can attend the Alumni game next Friday August 5th. There is a 35+ and a young alumni game. Last year JMFJ, Porter, Komisarek, Cammalleri, and Hensick all showed up. Red has a wicked backhand and skates circles around almost everyone there.
Red is one of the most quality--and most classy--individuals I've ever met. I met him in person as a student many times, and even got a stick signed by him. I was inquiring about employment within the AD at one point, and he was kind enough to personally respond with an e-mail, replying with, "I'd be glad to circulate your resume around the AD." Go Red, Go Blue!
