Re: Lewan's unsportsmanlike actions

I LOVE how Hoke & Lewan addressed this today. Both said it was unacceptable, Lewan said he regrets it, and Hoke said that it was not what Michigan wants to portray or be.

No excuses, no defending it.

Besides grabbing a facemask, I don't really see any similarities to Gholston who dove in and yanked the facemask hard and fast.  Lewan, while completely and utterly wrong and horrible, just tugged it.  Sort of like the difference between whiplash and push in the back

Plus, remember, Gholston was suspended for the punch only, as there is clearly a rule that a punch automatically results in a one game suspension (and he shouldve been kicked out the game).  He didn't received any subsequent penalty for the facemask pull (or all the other crap he did that game)

btw... that is a horrible gif.  If you are trying to show Lewan is bad, why mess it up with two additional plays that are nothing abnormal?   Show the tug and move on.

as is unfortunately becomming our MO, he will be suspended after a big outcry, which will be both highlight that Michigan got killed, that Lewan did this, that we did not suspend him at first, and only suspended him after the pressure to do so became too much. Always a day late and a dollar short, that is the Michigan difference.

Man, the self-loathing is strong.

Yes it was an egregious act and if wasn't flagged it shouldve been but this is no way rises to the level of a suspension.  Gholston was suspended for a punch, and a punch only.  A despite the rule book and the blatantness of the punch, the so-called Dean of Discipline acted as if Gholston did nothing wrong.  That was the outrage.  Not one minute of the missed game for Gholston was due to the facemask, the arm bar, etc.  Did Lewan punch Allen?   No.  If the Big Ten steps in and tries to suspend him, it will have vastly overstepped.

To me. Don't do it in the first place. It makes yourself and your whole team and fan base look bad. Saying sorry doesn't make it any better. Sit him for a half and I feel much better. Personal opinion.

The Big 10 is investigating him. He's probably going to miss some time. Classic hothead, has been one for his career here.

Dudes been collecting these dumb penalties since he was a freshman. A mean streak is always good for a no-lineman, but he lets his emotions get the best of him far too often.

I'm not saying I condone his actions, but I get it. Even the best people lose their cool every once in a while. It was embarassing that it was caught on TV multiple times, but I am starting to feel bad for the guy. He came back to help this team win a championship and things just haven't gone their way. He's done everything he can to help his team but I think frusturation just got the better of him. He's still a great leader for this team and from my view on the couch, he looked like the only one that had a fire inside.

It's tough to watch this season kind of slowly spiral into meh when a guy like Taylor Lewan put his professional career on hold to try and help this season be special and have it not come to fruition.  Add to that the indignity of having MSU embarass them in East Lansing when clearly Lewan wanted to come in there and give some payback for all the shenanigans in 2011.

Sucks, but life is rarely a Hollywood ending.  Many times the bad guys win.

Hoke said if he believed Lewan should be suspended he would've done it by now. I disagree with Hoke's decision, Lewan should be suspended. No excuse for what he did and he should be punished for it.

Agreed. He should absolutely be suspended for the Nebraska game.

And I agree that Hoke hasn't really shown himself to be very harsh with penalties. He pretty much hands down the minimal, without being insulting, penalty. In this case, apparently it's "none."

I was just assuming he would be suspended.  I don't think there is any question he is going to be suspended by the Big Ten.  I mean, I really think that if Hoke wants to go the minimalist route, it would still be wise to suspend him for a half against Nebraska and perhaps the conference would call it all square.  This way he is basically guaranteeing that the conference will suspend him one game, unless they have already reviewed it and deemed it not-suspension worthy, and that would really surprise me.

Can you find an occasion when somebody was seriously hurt by having their facemask pulled like Lewan did? I hate to sound like a Lewan apologist (and he should have been penalized in the game), but football players running full speed who get facemasked by other football players running full speed rarely get injured. I have literally never seen someone seriously injured from a facemask penalty. Ever.

Meanwhile, driving under the influence puts you at risk of hurting or killing yourself, any passengers, civilians walking down the street, people in other cars, etc.

Is a DUI/criminal offense a worse offense than pulling on a guy's facemask on the football field? Absolutely. Get your head on straight.

the answer to your question would then have to be, "it depends on if anybody gets hurt."  That cannot be the appropriate conclusion.  The appropriate punishment should be determined by intent, including indifference toward causing harm, not by the effect.  A DUI driver intends no harm at all, but his actions are reckless enough to be deemed criminal.  Lewan's actions were either intentional to cause pain, or reckless as what the result would be.  If you are saying that Lewan "intended harm in the form of pain but not serious injury" and thus should not be disciplined then you are splitting too many hairs.   If   If
