Podcast Season - Hoops Edition

Submitted by AZBlue on October 13th, 2021 at 9:44 AM

With the Bye Week upon us - (and personally facing a 700mi drive this week) - I have been going through my podcast list for the upcoming hoops season.  Listed below are what I currently have and would suggest, but I am always looking for more including anything national but M-adjacent.

Michigan - (omitting many general Rivals, 247, Locked-on types that cover all M sports in-season)

- Michigan Insider - Hoops Edition - Will bump to a weekly 'cast in-season with Sam Webb and Tim McCormick - incorporate a lot of interviews in with the analysis.  Great Insight and access into the program IMO - did a recent 2-part early Team preview based on Tim viewing a private "pre-practice" practice.  Have interviewed every Frosh and probably every team member period in their pods over the Summer and Fall.

- Moving Screen - Dylan from MHoops and Brendan Quinn of the Athletic -- very good M and MSU hoops content.  Recent episodes covered pre-season overview of the B1G and pre-season poll

- The Beat - Nick and Brendan from the athletic-- covering both M and MSU - Both Football and Hoops (NSFW langauge often) much more of a journalistic approach than fan-focused.

- Bucket Problem - Warning this is Ace's cast for those who have a problem with him - otherwise this group of fans covers football and Hoops - I expect more hoops focus given Ace's love of Basketball

B1G etc.

- Final Four is not on the Schedule - MSU-centric cast (I will admit I found this while searching for "Spartan-freude" last season..)   Actually does a good job separating "homer" tendencies and a very good job on talent and roster analysis.  May not be a "go to" cast during the season but they are currently in the process of doing a team-by-team analysis and projection for the upcoming system - a new cast every day...Doing worst-to-first (in their opinion) up to NW at #10.

- Off Tackle Empire -- A MSU and Illinois Alum covering B1G Football and hoops -- They try to be unbiased but spend way too much time talking Illinois Football imo and seem to unite in their mutual dislike of M.  Still a good listen once you have gone through the rest.

That is my current list - any suggestions on additions are appreciated!

I like Go Blue with Stu (Stu Douglass's podcast).  Mostly interviews with current/former players.  Moving Screen and The Beat are my favorites though!

I do wish The Athletic had a UM-specific podcast when it comes to football. The Beat is great and so are Quinn and Baumgardner, but sometimes I’d like to listen about Michigan football without having to hear about MSU football.

Inside the Hall is an IU basketball podcast but they have some pretty good episodes that cover/preview the Big Ten; they had Dylan Burkhardt of UMHoops on for a preview pod a few weeks ago. They work together with UMHoops to settle on a preseason Big Ten Top 25 players list each year

Michigan State of Mind is a podcast from former Beilein M player Ant Wright, who first got big through twitter and what was then known as locker room app now Spotify Greenroom (like clubhouse, which is somewhere between a podcast and live radio call-in type app). The podcast episodes are usually just lockerroom/Greenroom recordings.

Three Man Weave is the best out there for anything national. They're currently going through their conference previews and a new pod will come out tonight, either previewing the Big 12 or Big Ten (I forget which is next on the list).

love Tim McCormick but in that recent podcast, is it just me or did they completely forget to talk about about Caleb Houstan. They went through the senior players in Part 1, and then covered all the freshman in part 2….but completely forgot to talk about Caleb Houstan lol

Didn’t notice that (they did spent a LOT of time on Houstan during the World competition that he was in for Canada).

Tim is not infallible- he was pretty adamant earlier this fall that M might not have room for Traore because Hunter would be back next year….he has since spoken to Hunter and has backed off that assertion.

Dylan and Quinn are really good because you can pair Quinn's access to the teams with Dylan's statistical analysis and overall levelheadedness. Dylan is like Steve Lorenz - an M fan but able to emotionally disconnect and offer objective analysis.

Titus & Tate is good for national hoops, and is often pretty B1G focused, as Mark Titus is (gasp) an Ohio State alum. Despite that, they actually tend to have had a pretty positive view of Michigan for the last several years, and Duncan Robinson has been a guest on a few occasions.

I also really enjoy the Moving Screen, even if it's 50/50 UM/MSU.

Good post and good list. Enjoy Quinn on the Moving Screen and the Beat while you can - the Athletic is starting to move him to more national coverage. Hopefully he can remain at least somewhat local. He seems to have a knack for developing insider-level relationships and sources while still being hard-hitting when he needs to be.

Moving Screen is hands down the best B1G (and specifically M and MSU) bball podcast out there.  Love Dylan and Brandon.

The Beat with Nick and Brandon is also solid, but I feel it's become a little too "ranty" for my taste recently. Like listening to a couple friends who think they know but don't really know what they're talking about.  Especially now that it's only been Brandon and Nick - it's clear Brandon doesn't really know what he's talking about with football and Nick doesn't know what he's talking about with Basketball.  So, you get a weird mashup of hot takes.  Like I said, solid, but no where near the Moving Screen level of information.

“Scarlet & Maize” is on YouTube and also everywhere you get podcasts. I think it’s pretty good and I’m super unbiased about it.

Done by a Michigan fan ? and an Ohio State fan. First basketball episode is coming next week.

Check out my podcast. We’ve had Brian on the show and have recently interviewed several coaches from teams that made the tournament last year. Including, VCU head coach Mike Rhoades. And have several more lined up. Search “DNP-CD Sports”. It’s available on every podcast platform and YouTube.
