Playoff seeding hypotheticals

Submitted by UMfan21 on November 26th, 2022 at 6:21 PM

Would you agree the order is firmly set as:

1.Georgia

2.Michigan

3.TCU

4. To Be Determined

I don't think any 1 loss team is going to jump TCU, so are we pretty much h locked in with the horned frogs?  I like that match up.  A lot.

FUCK THAT. I hate that narrative. Michigan was discounted THE ENTIRE season because they played no one. Well, if they played no one and smashed OSU, then gtfo. They showed they’re a true team even without the best damn player. Osu shouldn’t sniff the top 4 based on how much they labeled Michigan.

…that said they drop down to 4 lol

I don't disagree. That said, 8 Clemson just lost to SCar and 5 LSU is on the ropes against TAMU. If USC holds serve against ND (currently up by 17), I wouldn't be surprised to see the Trojans take over the 4 spot with OSU number 5. If USC loses again though at some point, it could be the buckeyes moving up to number 4 as the top 1 loss team.

I think cmte will rank OSU 5th or 6th next Tuesday.  With that said, what if OSU in the playoffs could be useful to us?  What if they are good enough to take out Georgia but they just can't seem to beat us anymore and we win the national championship by pummeling them again but avoiding Georgia?  It's hard to erase the memory of facing Georgia last year.  For whatever reason, we seem to match up poorly against Georgia but well against OSU.

I mean the issue is if other teams lose than you just got a bunch of two loss teams and OSU as the only one loss or better team with TCU. I mean in theory losing in blowout fashion should be the end for OSU but if there is only two loss teams and them for the 4th spot it puts the committee in a tough spot.

The playoff ranking discussion is starting to get really interesting for the fourth and final spot.  Alabama has lost by only a total of 4 pts the entire season on 2 last second plays.  USC lost only once but they don't really look the part and SP+ ranks them 14th best in the country.  Yikes.   I guess Ohio State has a claim with only one loss but they just got roasted at home.  But if we're being fair, we may just be a bad matchup for them and the nuts may actually be one of the top four teams in the country.  Also, LSU is on the ropes and might eliminate themselves tonight.

Sure, the two losses were close, but Bama also comes with a 1-point win at Texas on a last-second field goal and a 4-point win at HOME against TAMU that came down to the last play. Their most impressive win was against...Mississippi State...? Doesn't seem like a playoff resume.

Meh, I'm agnostic about whether or not they should get in. They have an argument. On the other hand, if USC and TCU win out, I don't see how OSU gets in over an unbeaten or a one loss Conference Champion.

The real poser is what do we do if Georgia loses the SEC Championship? I think Georgia is obviously in, but how do you pick two out of three from a 2 loss SEC Champion who beat Georgia, and the previouly mentioned unbeaten and one loss Big 12 and PAC 12 Champions? It's a puzzle that is completely academic to we Wolverines, he-he.

I think we're in trouble on our resume. We STILL haven't beaten anybody good. /s

(because nobody looks good after playing us).

THANK YOU Ryan Day for thinking that you could solve your defensive softness with a coordinator from the Big 12 lol!

I don't know that OSU's defensive game plan is to blame. All season long, we marveled at teams playing two high safeties while our offense was killing them with inside running. OSU noticed this, and our offense's problems hitting deep shots, so they logically sold out to stop the run (just like we expected everyone to do after the Iowa game).

Then, they got three long bombs for TDs in their faces. So they back out to slow the now potent pass attack, and Michigan's running game looks like its old self. So, they crowd the line again, and get busted for two long TD runs.

What are they supposed to do if Michigan's offense is going to play like that? We may actually have a team that really can beat anyone (even an unbeaten SEC Champion) with their A game. The only path I see to beating Michigan on a day like today is run up the score in the first quarter (like last season's Georgia game) while the Michigan defense is finding its footing.

It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine!

EXACTLY!  The thing that I think has not gotten enough attention is that UM's coaching staff has won the in-game adjustment chess match in EVERY F'ING GAME!   Spend the whole season battering teams with the running game.  Want to stack the box?   Cool, multiple passes over the top.  Back out of the stacked boxes?   Cool, here comes some punishment from the running game.  To be 100% sure, I am not discounting a great pair of running backs and an absolutely top-shelf O-line.   But if you don't recognize how great the coaching staff has worked in-game, ask yourself how you think Iowa's staff or Bert's would have done with this team.   I love these players.  I love this coaching staff.   And I F'ING LOVE Jim Harbaugh.

I was in the stadium today.  Yes, I've had some drinks.

Bama will jump OSU.

SEC bias + Bama's 2 losses are in the final seconds

OSU just got whooped at home.  Close game, maybe.  Pounded to dust...don't see them staying above Bama. As of this week

1) UGA

2) UM

3) TCU

4) USC (with a win)

5) LSU

6) Bama

7) OSU

I really don't want to see Bama as a 2-3 matchup, but knowing the committee they will try everything to create a Bama-UGA final.

OSU’s road win at PSU is better than anything Bama has done. OSU lost to the #1 or #2 team. If LSU loses to Georgia, USC is the only team keeping OSU out. USC has to beat ND and Oregon. That’s doable, but not a guarantee. I can see the CFP being:

1. Georgia, after falling to 2, they jump back to 1 with a win over #4 LSU.

2. Michigan

3. TCU

4. USC/OSU

Alabama is passing no one with two losses. The Tide will not bypass the Buckeyes who only leave playoff consideration if SC loses to ND tonight or Oregon next week. However, when you're on the sideline watching others play, you're not in a very strong position to process your future standing.

If Georgia loses to LSU, which I don't see happening, UM May end up playing Georgia as the #1 seed. I think. Let us hope Georgia wins so we get to play TCU, if TCU wins next week. I like that matchup.
