Plans with no March Madness

Submitted by goblu330 on March 9th, 2023 at 2:32 PM

It surprised me, but that loss actually felt like it took a weight off my shoulders.  Michigan did not have a particularly good basketball team this year, and that, thankfully, is a rarity.  This time of the year is typically reserved for day-drinking during basketball games, but with Michigan out, I really am not going to care about the tournament. And I’m broke!   So no travel planned.  So to those similarly situated, what’s the plan.

1.  Short game- we are gonna get a thaw here soon, let’s get those wedges out early.

2.  Work- Usually work on the Penske file all of March.  I can turn this around now!  March can be my come back month.

3.  House of the Dragon - I gotta watch this thing at some point right?

Gonna be a weird March but it will pass.

This season didn’t go our way, but let’s not get carried away.  We have become a bit spoiled as far as the tourney goes.  Eventually we were going to have to sit one out.

We’ll be back.  Go Blue.

I enjoy the tournament much more when Michigan is not it, as they were for my formative years in the aughts. I can fully enjoy brackets, watching 3-4 games simultaneously the first weekend, rooting for upsets, and betting on games (now that it's legal).

When Michigan is in, it's harder to enjoy the games before they play, particularly their potential future opponents. Obviously I'd prefer they are in, but overall I think they detract more than add to my enjoyment of the tournament (particularly the first two days).

Your post got me thinking. I love the tournament regardless and of course, I prefer for Michigan to be in it. At this point it's hard to remember what it's like without them, which is a great change from where we were in the 2000s. Anyway, there is an added nervous element when they're in, especially with the wait before the first game and the break after the first weekend (in recent years as they keep advancing to the S16).

Those of you who don’t pay attention just shows that you aren’t that much into March Madness.

I call Sunday the best Sunday of the year. I buy the fathead bracket every year. Sunday I’ll sharpie the teams in after the selection show. My buddies and I call Friday of the tournament National Holiday where we call off and meet at the bar all day long and watch and bet. It’s fantastic

Yeah, you are right.  That’s actually a good call.  I’m into Michigan sports, not really sports in general I guess.  I think it may be a product of what I can fit I my life.  I need all time not reserved for Michigan sports to be reserved for something else.

I'll watch the 2 Kansas schools kick the shit out their first round opponents with both schools making the sweet 16. KU may make the final 4. There is a report that Bill Self may have suffered a minor hear attack but could be back with the team by tournament time.

Well the young guys kind of are the starters....Jett, Dug, Kobe still a SO.

Did you see the stat during the game today? Points in B1G Tourney for Michigan, HD = 42, Rest of the Team = 0.

I would say more games would help, but they are meaningless, and when Toledo chokes in their MAC tourney, would suck to play them and get smacked around.

Respect you as a poster, but I agree with Guy. The team looked unmotivated when in a play in game, how will they look in a meaningless exhibition tourney? Could you (maybe not you but the average informed fan) name one NIT winner over the last 5 years? I couldn't, and I follow cbb pretty closely.

A few more practices and games against weak competition isn't going to help Dug or Tarris, this team is used to S16s, I bet the players don't even want to play in the NIT.

i've just never understood the notion that there's literally no value in accepting a postseason bid.  reps matter, particularly in game situations, and especially in one-and-done environments.  i wouldn't call it weak competition, either - it will be exactly the kind of teams we should be playing on our non-conference schedule.  we should be embracing the chance to play every game we can get, especially against good teams.

but that's not what he said, anyway.  he said they'd be "idiots to accept" the bid, which...i mean, come on.  are you a basketball team that wants to win games?  are you going to bust your ass?  or are you going to slink away, embarrassed that your season didn't go the way you wanted?

"we'd be idiots to accept a bid" is loser mentality.  i'd be stunned and EXTREMELY disappointed to find that anyone on the actual team or staff has that opinion.

It's fairly easy to me when Michigan has at least a few sports that are competing for championships. With basketball being done, I'll pay more attention to hockey, gymnastics, and spring football reports/watching highlights of last year. I agree about the relief, there's no more BPONE when the opponent starts to eat away at our 2nd half lead.

Busy with work so I only caught snippets but Michigan handled these same jabronis a few weeks ago did they not. No VT and no Michigan make me a very sad panda. I'll still watch the tournament but largely as a neutral commenter.

And man Michigan flamed out hard. If they had only won in those last 2 games they might have eked their way in. They done now.

Doing a spring break road trip from Vegas to Phoenix. Plan is to go Vegas - Zion - Anetalope Canyon - Grand Canyon - Flagstaff - Phoenix. Anything we should add or make sure not to miss? (teenage kids in tow, fwiw)

We did that tour around the Grand Canyon a few years ago, stayed in Page AZ and took a boat tour on Lake Powell. Excellent Navajo boat captain took us down some nice side canyons. I’d recommend it depending on the water level status. It’s been low but I’m hearing that things may be improving due to the heavy snow. Weather may be chilly.

Maybe swing by Lake Havasu on the way back.
