Peppers snowflakes

Submitted by PeteM on

I wanted to share a couple of thoughts on Peppers that I'm not sure were mentioned on the broadcast or on the board before (this is late I know, but we just got back from Florida last night, and posting from my phone wasn't working).

One was that on more than on occasion during a TV timeout or other break Peppers would race onto the field with a water bottle for anyone who needed it.  Maybe that happens all the time but I've never seen an injured player (much less an injured star player) do that.  Also, about half way through the game he totally started trolling Florida's Jalen Tambor (of "we have 11 Jabrill Peppers on our defense" fame) with the gator chomp, which was hilarious.

Anyway, I love Jabrill's enthusiasm (he reminds me a bit of Denard in that way), and the fact that someone with his talent and notoreity is such a team guy.

It would have been an illegal formation penalty.

Assuming that the ends were lined up off of the line of scrimmage, as is typical for a field goal formation, there would only have been six men on the line of scrimmage.  During Hart's time, that would have been an illegal formation penalty, as you needed to have seven men on the line.

This rule has since been changed -- it's no longer a penalty to have only six men on the LOS, but you can't have more than four in the backfield.  There's no difference when a team has 11 men on the field, but now having ten guys on the field in this particular situation would no longer be a penalty.  As I recall, people were complaining that this basically gave the defense a "do-over" for failing to stop ten guys, in an otherwise legal formation, with eleven. :-)  (Also, it's not like the offense gets any advantage from taking a guy off of the line and putting him on the sidelines, so why penalize them for it?)

Didn't see Peppers on the phone, that seems like it might be frowned upon a little. As other posters have said though, he was easily the biggest cheerleader on the sidelines. We were just a few rows behind the bench and could see him constantly pumping up the other players. Big grin on his face, suited up but no helmet. He didn't show any signs of injury other than a glove on one hand, was wearing a sleeve on same arm I think.

Both guys are super cocky.  I love guys with swagger so it's not a knock.  When Mike was knocked out of the 2007 Rose Bowl, he was over there getting in guys' ears about coming back strong for next year, trying to pump them up.

You also have to follow that up off the field though.  We know how the 2007 season started, and there's been plenty of talk about the lack of preparation/focus for The Horror, so apparently the pep talk on Jan. 1 did not help.  Hopefully Pep can take the lead off the field for (hopefully) the next two seasons.

My initial thoughts were: "Michigan is dominating a good SEC team without Peppers."  Think of how this will translate to next year when he is back.

But we just kept thinking how odd he must have felt on the sidelines. I mean, he's been playing offense, defense and special teams this season. He probably was at a loss for what happens on the sidelines during a game, since he has hardly been there. Glad to see he handled it so well.

If Peppers hurt his hand doing something stupid and not related to football....it would not surprise me if Harbaugh told him he wasnt going to play anyway....as discipline and they kept it between the two of them.
