Penn State PFF Grades
Penn State PFF Grades and recap are up here.
Summary:
Speight was fine, good but not great. Wasn't asked for much.
Top 5 O players: Magnuson, Newsome, Darboh, Kalis, Butt
Top 5 D players: Hurst, Hill, Godin, Lewis, McCray
I've really liked what I have seen from Kalis this year, still not perfect but a large improvement so far, especially for a 5th year senior.
It wasn't hard to pick Hurst out as a dude yesterday. Our whole DL ate their OL for lunch, but Mo was in the backfield A LOT.

Many teams would pay money to have Matt Godin in their starting DL while we have the luxury of him as a rotational player. He's very solid.

They would pay money.

I get moving it from the 9 to the 24 but what if he had scored? would they have put it on the 15?

It was Smith. He bounced up afterwards knowing he was scary close to housing it.

Yes, we will lose a lot of talent and depth, but will still have Hurst, Mone, Gary, Winovich on the DL. Definitely lack depth at DT, which will be a problem unless guys like Dwumfour develop quickly or Onwenu moves to defense.
Hopefully Cole returns for his senior year, meaning we will have to replace Braden (LG), Kalis (RG), and Magnuson (RT). Bredesen will take 1 spot and Kugler or Dawson will take 1 of the other guard spots.

Onwenu was on the D line in the 4th quarter yesterday.

Hurst, Mone, Winovich, Gary. If Mone and Hurst don't go to the NFL we'll have a fine starting lineup but need guys like Onwenu, Lawrence Marshall, Mbem-Bosse to step into backup roles.

Should be a starting four of Gary, Hurst, Mone, Winovich. Backups will be Carlo Kemp, Mike Dwumfour, Lawrence Marshall, Ron Johnson (not in same positions just a list). Really talented starters but obviously we lose the known depth we have this year. I am encouraged by Dwumfour getting on the field already, I thought he'd be more of a project. If he is ready to go and solid as Mone's backup next year that will be huge. We are also still recruiting the DL for next year's class. Jay Tufele is a guy that is a dude - he would not be kept off the field if we got him in the class. He'd be a sure thing to replace Hurst at 3 tech in 2 years. James Hudson is mighty skrong as well.
I don't think Big Mike "Grapes of Wrath" Onwenu moves to DL as I think he locks down a starting guard spot next fall. I think from left to right our 2017 OL will be Newsome-Kugler-Cole-Onwenu-Bredeson. I know we have heard good things about Ulizio and Runyan but the staff always preaches getting the 5 best on the field and I think that is the OL cocktail that makes that happen.

Surprised Wormley was amongst the top D players..he was living in the backfield too. Thought it was his best game thus far.

Ryan Glasgow played a lot in the first half and not much in the 2nd half. Did not start the 2nd half, then came in for a bit and I dont believe played in the 4th quarter.

by a good margin. Same with Hurst on defense. All the other players listed were ranked closely together.

I can't wait for Brians numbers. PFF has to grade a hundred games in two days with one eye on each, Brian pours over every detail of every play of one game over the course of a week.

has been in the backfield in every game he's played. My favorite play of his was the one where he went after the running back, discovered he didn't have the fall after tossing him aside like a rag doll, and going after the qb. He looked like the bear in the Revenant. More of the same yesterday. Great game.
