Pat Forde: Maryland Interested in Durkin

Submitted by sundaybluedysunday on

Pat Forde is reporting that Maryland officials have met with DJ Durkin and came away extremely impressed. While it isn't all that surprising that he's getting some interviews, I certainly wasn't expecting him to land a power five job this offseason. Going to be interesting to see if anything develops.

Psh, they've got that Under Armour money. They're going to become the Oregon of the east coast, don't you know?

But seriously, Maryland produces some really nice talent and although I was being sarcastic, the Under Armour money is not trivial. They're not going to win the division or anything, but there's no reason they can't be an 8 win team on a consistent basis.

I think that is the wrong analogy. State still came to prominence during the worst 10 year stretch of UM history in he last half century, in a B1G that was languishing with one major national power firing on all cylinders, OSU, who because of the 10 team conference, MSU managed to miss during their breakthrough year and tied for a conference championship. Now, Dantonio is a top 5 coach, so he still turns around MSU if given the time, but does he get the time of he walked into the division if there're were three other top-5 coaches in the division. A closer analogy to Durkin's potential situation would be Dan Mullen at Miss St. Clearly a good coach, but just can't break though because he's at an undermanned school in a ridiculously tough division his whole career.

MSU was mediocre for most of the time from c. 1970-2009.   They've had a nice run over the last five years, and I think they'll be pretty good as long as Dantonio is there, but we don't know how much longer he'll coach.

PSU is on a stronger historical footing, but they seem to have made an uninspired hire in James Franklin.  They actually lost to Maryland last year and nearly did this year as well.  PSU won't stay mediocre forever, but it might be a few more years before they get it together.

Michigan and OSU should be strong for the forseeable future, but nothing's etched in stone.   Even if you do lose to those two, you can still have a pretty good season.  I don't think anyone's arguing that Maryland is a destination job, but a good coach might do decently there for a few years and then move on to a bigger program.

Although I certainly don't want to lose Durkin, I'm confident in Harbaugh's ability to bring in highly qualified assistants. We have deep pockets, a big name HC who guys want to coach under and a ton of defensive talent. These are the problems big time programs have. Their assistants get a ton of credit and get poached for HC jobs. It happened to MSU and OSU just last year. We'll be OK.

Well Narduzzi was getting interviews and offers long before he went to Pitt, they just weren't good enough offers to take. I think Durkin knows that with a couple more years under Harbaugh hell end up with interest and offers for higher tier programs than Maryland.

i disagree - narduzzi would have jumped at maryland.  i was thinking dj would get a gig at a mid major or an AAC school, not a B1G offer as his first HC job.  He can win there.   He may not win a B1G or NC, but he can win enough to get an offer at a place with a higher ceiling.

UGH

Please don't let this happen. I mean, I get that coordinators would like to be head coaches, but Maryland is a horrific place to start. Durkin can get a better head coaching job than that. I hope he stays at Michigan, though.

Sometimes I really wonder why guys leave good coordinator jobs.

I know it's human nature to always want to get better and be the best, but honestly. DC @ Michigan under Harbaugh is better than soo many other HC gigs. Why go to Maryland and subject yourself to a huge rebuilding project? Unless your aim is to win a Super Bowl down the road or something
