Owen Power to Sabres? Wings Pick Sixth in NHL Draft
Buffalo got the first pick, followed by Seattle. Detroit stays in place at sixth. At least they didn't drop.
1. Buffalo Sabres
2. Seattle Kraken
3. Anaheim Ducks
4. New Jersey Devils
5. Columbus Blue Jackets
6. Detroit Red Wings
7. San Jose Sharks
8. Los Angeles Kings
9. Vancouver Canucks
10. Ottawa Senators
11. Chicago Blackhawks
12. Calgary Flames
13. Philadelphia Flyers
14. Dallas Stars
15. New York Rangers
Still getting used to seeing the Kraken
This logo is one of the baddest NHL logos period.
edit: in this case bad means good LOL.
I really hate the current trends in graphic design but this is very cool. One of the few that I think will endure
Seems the best way to turn around a franchise is to disband and then reform under an expansion draft. Whaddya think, Toronto?
"With the sixth pick, the Detroit Red Wings select. . . Davel Patsyuk???"
Larry O. Memieux?
Ritt Momney?
Fergei Sederov?
Grain Wetski
Hordie Gowe?
Zenrik Hetterberg is another good choice.
Powers and Berniers expected by many to go 1/2. And while this is a bit of a strange draft, I unfortunately can’t dream up a scenario where either drops to 6.
Johnson will likely be there, but I’m not sure he’s who I want for Detroit.
Luke Hughes would be great, but NJ at 4 already has Jack and could use a blueliner. Tough to see them passing on having the brothers unless they’re really sold on Clarke/Edvisson.
I’m probably hoping either Clarke (high ceiling defencemen) or Eklund (forward some compare to Zetterberg) are there for Detroit.
Might have to pump the brakes on Berniers. Ray Ferraro was saying he was injured at World's and that might hurt his draft positioning. Can't find much about it online, but the video is here.
6th is probably too high for Detroit to grab one of the two elite goalies, but they'll likely be gone before the Washington pick. It will be interesting to see if they try to package one of their 2nd rounders to move up if one of the goalies slides. Given how many picks they've made the last three years, they probably have too many picks this year, but maybe they're viewing late rounders as better lottery tickets than most years, given the lack of scouting opportunity in Canada.
Yep, this is definitely the year to have a lot of extra picks.
Picking a goalie that early should cost Yzerman his job. They need forwards desperately.
Not really, forward is probably the least of our concern at this point. You need an elite forward, but there doesn’t project to be one in this draft. Keeping Vrana will be huge, but adding a couple of our prospects to our current group of forwards and that position group is... okay. Adding guys who seem to have a ceiling as second line forwards on a quality team doesn’t really move the needle for Detroit at this point. Our roster is already full of guys like that.
But bigger needs on this team are quality defensemen and goaltending. Our goalie prospects are pretty light and we can’t survive forever picking up the scraps in free-agency. On defense we don’t have much to look forward to outside of Seider. Adding a defenseman you can pair with Seider or put on the second line would be huge for this team.
Normally I’d agree with you on taking a goalie that early being a bad thing. But in such a deep draft without much in terms of top-end positional players, I think it’s safe to pounce on the elite goalie at a position of need and add to your depth in the rest of the draft. The bonus first round pick is what really sells it for me. Without there being any real “great” prospects in this draft, best to pounce on the “great” goalie.
You can get a good, Cup caliber goalie later in the draft and it's probably the smarter decision in terms of value add. There's been less than 15 goalies drafted in the first round since 2000 and only three of them have really panned out relative to their draft positions: MAF, Price, and Vasilevsky (too lazy too look up spelling). Some others have had good careers - and a lot of it is dependent on the team and organization. MAF's success with the Pens is more of a product of the teams he was on rather than him carrying the team on his back. We can agree to disagree on defenseman versus forwards - I personally feel the Wings need to get bigger, faster, and stronger in terms of forwards to be able to compete with the elite teams, but I wouldn't be pissed if they took defensemen in the first round Skaters, skaters, skaters.
But my point is that those skaters don’t exist in this draft. None of them project to be elite players at this point. Especially the ones that will still be around at 6. You’re half right. We DO need forwards to compete with the elite teams. But we need elite forwards to compete with elite teams. You’re not getting that in this draft.
If there were bigger, faster and stronger forwards available at 6 that had the look of a first liner, I’d agree. If this were a draft with more talent at the top, I’d agree. But that’s not this draft. It’s a deep draft without much high-end talent. The guy you’d get at 6 isn’t a much different than the guy you’d get at 15-20. And the Wings have not had success grabbing goalies later in the draft.
What IS available, is an elite goaltending prospect that posted a .908 saves percentage and a 2.23 as a 17 year old playing against grown men in Sweden’s top league. It isn’t some reach on a goalie who has good measurables or athleticism and could develop, it’s a kid who is already producing in one of the top pro leagues in the world.
Grabbing an elite goaltending prospect that has production already does a lot more for this team moving forward than grabbing a forward who projects as a second liner. Our roster is full of guys like that. The rest of the draft is full of guys like that. Grab the elite prospect at a major position of need at 6, then grab your depth players the rest of the draft.
Not a disaster lottery result for the Wings since they stood pat at #6 based on standings plus they have a shit ton of picks in the first 4 rounds that Yzerman can utilize to either maneuver around or take a bunch of players and pray that some will stick as a long term player for them. The draft is solid but no elite prospects in the level of McDavid, Lafreniere but '22 and '23 draft is where it's at so hopefully the Wings can get lucky and land the #1 pick
If the hockey gods exist, Detroit will somehow get a top 2 pick in 23 to cap the rebuild. Bedard and that Russian kid are looking like elite, elite prospects.
Shane Wright is the prize next year.
This x100. He would have broke McDaivds junior points record if not for the COVID shortened season. As a rookie. And he was an assistant captain. As a rookie. Oh, and he was 15 years old. Closest thing to Sydney Crosby in a while
Yeah he’s definitely looking like a Crosby/McDavid prospect. Just dominating already at such a young age in the CHL. And the Russian winger in the same class is basically dominating over there better than anyone has at his age since Ovechkin. So the 23 class is shaping up to be like the 04 class with Ovechkin/Malkin where the guy sitting at #2 goes 1st overall most years.
What I worry about is Detroit potentially squeezing into playoffs that year. Sounds crazy given the last few seasons, but Seider/Berggren/Raymond are probably all in the show by then and potentially change the dynamic of the team quickly. But man if you could somehow land one of those 2 in 23 that would be such a game changer on top of the Top 10 picks we will have added by then.
There is a less than zero chance of the Wings being a playoff team next year.
Closest thing to Sydney Crosby in a while
Hopefully without all the diving and crying like a little fucking bitch.
Crosby started his career as you note but has really grown up. He seems like a good dude now. Trust me--it took a long time for me to come to that position after the way he handled himself in 2008 and 2009. The second act has been much better than the first.
Crosby started his career as you note but has really grown up.
Video evidence does not support your hypothesis. This happened only 60 days ago.
Care to comment that diving isn't a part of Sid's game any more???
Was really hoping to see Arizona win the lottery, just to see people freak out since the pick was forfeited as a penalty for violating pre-draft scouting rules.
It is an absolute crime that the wings have not gotten a top 3 pick during this rebuild. Maybe the Pistons will get the first pick to make up for some of the Detroit lottery misfortune.
The NHL lottery has been an absolute embarrassment the past few years. The fact that the worst team in the league was most likely to pick 4th is nonsensical. The league completely overreacted to a nonissue. How has that tanking worked out for Edmonton/Buffalo anyways? Detroit got screwed by this lame ass system by rebuilding at the wrong time. That’s why the hockey gods owe us one of Wright/Bedard/Russian kid the next two drafts.
Seattle Kraken? Wow, I have not been paying attention to the NHL lately
The Kraken are one of 3 teams in the NHL to share this distinction. Can anyone guess what it is?
4 = Lightning, Avalanche, Wild and Kraken
Well, yes, you are correct. Good job!
Seattle expansion was approved Dec '18. The upcoming '21-'22 season will be their first.
Power sentenced to 3 years in Buffalo and then on to a real team. I love the Sabres but management is a total disaster. Wings will never get "lucky" in the draft lottery. Just not gonna ever happen so Wings fans need to give up the hope of ever getting a top three pick. Sorry, it is just the way it is.
