OTish—Sad Sports Fans: A retrospective
You guessed it—surrender cobra makes a prominent appearance. May we never see it again. Kind of disappointed they left that LSU fan shaking her head out.
The surrender cobra picture is really a great encapsulation in time. It is a picture that should win the Sports "Pulitzer" for images. It is the way everybody felt. Many covered it up by being "obnoxious sarcastic laugh guy" or immediate but-we-were-better-so-doesn't-matter-emotion suppression. But that guy, that face, is how every Michigan fan felt. Disheveled, exposed, broken.
The look reminds me of literally thinking in the timeout before the punt (actually after 2nd down was the timeout actually) how much had to go wrong in a very short time to lose and actually concluding Michigan could not lose the ballgame, at least certainly not in regulation.
It all went wrong. Every single thing that had do go wrong went wrong. In the double digits of things. Never seen anything like it. Probably never will again.
Had I not been at the game, and witnessed that play with my own eyes...I wouldn't have believed it.
Go Blue!
Wait...wut?
Had I not been at the game, and witnessed that play with my own eyes...I wouldn't have believed it.
Go Blue!
You can say that again.
Long before "surrender" cobra I did a middle finger "dancing" cobra at Cordell Stewart.
As low as the lows get the HIGH of being at UTL1,"They went for it all", Desmond strikes a pose, 97 are higher then the lowest low. This thread needs to be followed up with an elation reaction thread.
That play sucked, but I am perfectly happy with the directions both teams have headed since then.
Yeah, it is much easier to deal with now than it was. I have treated it with exposure therapy. Sometimes I just watch the play now. You take the names off the jerseys and it is an incredible sports moment. Laettner's shot. Tyson on his back. Steve Bartman. It is in the collection of where-were-you-when moments.
I like these though.. Who is that dude flexing in the background?
Oh my goodness - look at the blizzard in the first pic, with Stroud on the ground. That photo must reach across the width of the field - 60 plus yards - and, I can see the block M on the knit caps certain fans in the stands are wearing.
Those conditions were horrific. Lol, yeah...
The All-Time Classic. Most beautiful sports picture ever made.
it’s pure assholery to do this when it happens, and pure assholery to dredge them back up for another round of ridicule.
Calm down my guy, there are way more pure assholery things in sports than poking fun at sad sports fans
Guessing he was not a fan of Brian’s TWIS column.
I wouldn't go quite that far but I tend to agree that for these iconic "Fan-in-the-crowd" reaction moments, it could have some unintended lasting effects. Besides exploding in today's online meme culture, people put their faces on t-shirts, use it for advertising, and not to mention they are always brought up in pre-game introductions.
It's the price you pay I guess if you attend games and there is an iconic moment such as the fumble or last second buzzer beater where any fan reactions can be caught on camera. Here's to hoping they're more celebratory in nature than the bad beat moments we've seen.
I'm with you on this. I think it's exploitative to focus in on fans during their moments of extreme disappointment. That kid didn't know he was signing up to become a meme when he showed up to the game that day. And now he is the personification of disappointment to millions.
That's pretty fucked up.
The glass is either - half empty, or half full. To each his own. My preference is to view it this way... (Yes, my glass is half full.)
I still have my sweatshirt with "1997 Champions" on the front. Wore it for a bit for a few years and then hung it up. It's been untouched since, save for moving it to grab another sweatshirt on the rack. It's pristine!
I have one that I never wore. I saved it as a trophy.
I prefer to associate with people that view the glass as half full, but the glass is 25 years old now and we deserve a refill!
Forget surrender cobra, this is what I love....
Jubilation Joe or is it Blissful Bob!
I'm going with Lester the Molester. Watch the hand closely. I remember detailed discussion here on that scene.
Off-topic, that Fox site is painful and ad-laden.
Nothing beats the rapture guy!
There’s the crying Bama girl after the Kick Six, but it’s hard to top the Popcorn Guy. That dude has a multimedia thing going on.
For some reason I remember this crying kid from the Colorado/Nebraska game in 2002 when Colorado kicked the crap out of #1 Nebraska.
A small correction - the game was played in November 2001, not 2002.
This season is a great example of why the BCS was a such a tremendous structure. Nebraska did not win its division or its conference - yet, still played Miami for the National Championship. And, yes - Nebraska lost a close one to Miami, 37-14. (The Huskers were only down 34-0 at the half in the game against Miami.)
I enjoyed this one after MSU lost to Arizona State at home in football a few years ago.
Great makeup application!
I have been two UM-MSU games, 2004 and 2015. Antipodes.
Tripping on someone’s cornhole board and having water(accidentially) thrown in my face after the was the turd on top after the ‘15.
Bill Simmons looks like he was staring through the game, through the opposite end of the arena, past the parking lot, the blocks and city beyond, and into nothingness, facing the ultimate pointlessness of existence for the very first time.
That's a very vivid description!
Soccer fan silent hyena... No posts about Messi turning down $ 1.5 billion from the Saudis to play for Miami ( best thing for US soccer in a long time)?
I remember seeing this live. I felt bad for him having high expectations for Northwestern in the tournament.
What I found even more tragic was Cobra Guy was at Ford Field for the Aaron Rodgers hail-mary in a zebra induced Lions loss the same season.
I'm not superstitious or anything, but I would have to swear off attending any high-profile games for a while.
