OTish- MGOBREWER DOES CHICAGO

Submitted by itsbigcat on
Hey all, I'm sending myself on a three day weekend for the Tigers/Sox series in Chicago next weekend, and have cleared my schedule for the opening kick off against App St. I've looked on the bar locator map, and found mixed results. I've googled and binged and thought I'd just come straight to the source. I'm missing my first home opener with my guys down here in Indiana in I can't remember how long, so I'm looking for a good crowd of you Chicagoland grads/fans to catch the game with before I hop on the red line to US Cellular that night...so what gives? Where are you guys that are going out for a group thing downtown headed.? Would love to feel some camaraderie as I'll be missing my buddies and my big screen, Thanks in advance for not hammering me in the interest of, well, community?

First place I checked, there's five different bars, looks like it was last updated along time ago, so if I risk heading to one of those in time for kick off, to find everyone is at another one I'm kinda screwed, reason I asked here. Thanks though. Looks like Rockitt is the alumni bar, but they have two locations that it's very unclear on.

Duffy's on Division street is where I watched the football and basketball games when I lived in chicago.  The crowd is like mid-20s mostly local fans but definitely some recent alumni as well (you can find them because they were the student fooball shirts from the years they were in school).  It's standing room only for most games and they play The Victors on the bar sound system after every big Michigan play.  Closest thing to being in the student section without being at the Big House.  Also beer is pretty cheap and they have moderate selection.

I don't know if the Hubbard (River North) Rock-It is UM-affiliated, but the Wrigleyville (Clark, across from Wrigley Field) definitely is.

The Diag (http://www.diagchicago.com/) typically gets a good crowd, too, as does Matilda (Sheffield, south of Belmont). Matilda is an odd bar; you wouldn't take it as a sports bar, but UM fans go there so that's all you really need.

All are fairly close to the Red line. Not familiar with the south side UM bar scene, sorry.

Diag Bar & Grill, 2856 N. Southport Ave. (map)

• Rockit Bar & Grill, 22 W. Hubbard (map)

• Rockit Burger Bar, 3700 N. Clark Street (map)

• West End, 1326 W Madison St, Chicago, IL, 60607 (map)

I've been to games at Diag and both Rockits, both are a good time. Big crowds, get there early.

I second Duffy's, but you need to get there as early as you can. If not, then Diag or Rockit are solid alternatives. Warning - if you don't pick a Michigan-centric bar, there is a good chance the sound will not be on. I'm going to the game, otheriwse I would join you!

If you want to be rowdy, go to Duffy's.  If you're more laid back, go to RockIt or Matilda's.  The neighborhood for RockIt Wrigleyville (Clark Street) has more goin' on than the one further south.

Sounds like I'm headed to Rockitt. I'll be the big bearded guy with the tattoos and maize and blue tigers hat. Thank you guys for the advice! Mods, if we need room on the board go ahead and delete this thread cause I got my info! Thanks again and Go Blue!
