OT: Valentine's Day Open Thread
So, it's another Valentine's Day.
I fall somewhere in between the people who think it's just another Hallmark Holiday...and those who take it very seriously and see it as an opportunity to use Facebook to display the specialness of their love/relationship.
My third grade daughter was very excited to present me with the Valentine's Day card she picked out especially for me...and my wife and I followed our usual tradition of hiding cards for one another in drawers in the bathroom and in our dresser.
After work, it's off to dinner with my family and my parents.
What's everyone else doing? Do you buy in to the Valentine's Day hype or are you a grumpy naysayer?

Rocking the single life. Just a regular ass day for me. Heading up to Higgins for a long weekend full of drinking and ice fishing.
I feel for people who have to participate in holidays like these.
February 14th, 2013 at 12:09 PM ^
... who think drinking and ice fishing are better than having someone special in their lives. Love is an amazing thing. That being said, if you could share that weekend full of drinking and ice fishing with someone special. That would be awesome.
February 14th, 2013 at 12:40 PM ^
Given the choice on a day/weekend like this, I would much rather be solo and drinkin', fightin' and ice-fishin' than dealing with the un-necessary pressure from the made up BS "Holiday" puts on my relationship.
I love my wife, but hate Valentine's day with a passion. Put me down in the grumpy-naysayers category.

Haha her face says it all. He's in trouble if they're actually together.

Looks like she is holding onto someone to her right. I think she is just pretty shocked and mostly disgusted.

is Valentine's Day?
February 14th, 2013 at 11:36 AM ^
...and tomorrow is St Claude's day.
Exciting shit all-around when you are French catholic.

Only time I've ever liked it was when I was a kid and we made our own boxes to collect our valentines from classmates and in 5th grade I made a C3PO one. It was pretty dope.
As an adult, I'm a cheap bastard and broke up w/ a girl b/c our anniversary, her bday, xmas and Valentines Day were w/in the next three months. And that was just alot of money that I did not want to spend. I'm an asshole for it, but I am what I am.

Having intimate relations with women of questionable and/or loose morals. Or sleeping with MSU chicks.

"Chocolate covered strawberries" better be some sort of sex act. If not, you are a fool. Buy some strawberries, throw some Hershey's bars in a pot, put it on the stove, dip and lay to dry. Did it for my wife back when she was slender and chocolate was a "treat", now it's part of her damn food pyramid.

But do you really think these guys know what a double boiler is!!??
February 14th, 2013 at 9:52 PM ^
I've always though that Herm was a fake. But this gives me pause, because anyone under 60 would just put the chocolate bars in the microwave for a few minutes
February 14th, 2013 at 9:54 PM ^
I used a pot; I was seventeen at the time.
February 14th, 2013 at 11:50 PM ^
Any relationship you have at 17 isn't worth making homemade chocolate strawberries for. The cost-benefit just isn't in your favor. Of course, the cold, calculating approach to women is normally rather ill-fated.
February 14th, 2013 at 11:56 PM ^
Pro chocolate covered strawberries:
- I took a melted Hershey bar and dunked strawberries in it, probably took fifteen minutes and like six bucks.
- She was hot.
Cons
- High school romance means precisely nothing.
- She went to OSU.
Yep, guess you're right on this one. Cons have it by a mile.

I'm working all day and then going home to do whatever it is that the wifey wants me to do on this sacred holiday.
Then I'm gonna smoke so much weed that I forget that I typed that stupid sentence.

So it will be Skyfall and beer for me tonight, maybe get really crazy and order a pizza or make some tacos or something.
Anyone ever read Swamplandia!? I had been hearing good things so I got a friend to sneak that and some bath stuff into her hotel room tonight. I hope she finishes the book soon because I want to check it out, though I'm not a big novel reader.
February 14th, 2013 at 11:49 AM ^
at the library because it looked interesting. I stopped reading because it rubbed me the wrong way but I should probably give it another shot. Let me know what you think.
February 14th, 2013 at 11:51 AM ^
was it the writing style, plot, something else? Not to try and spoil it before I pick it up, just wondering.
February 14th, 2013 at 2:07 PM ^
The plot (or at least the setting) is what drew me in but the writing style left something to be desired. Once again, I only spent a short amount of time with it (read only maybe 20 pages or so) but I went from "interested" to "meh" in that time. If you do end up reading it let me know how it holds up. Sorry if I ruined anything!
February 14th, 2013 at 2:09 PM ^
even if you did, that one would definitely be on me since I was the one who asked. I'll be sure to let you know if I do end up getting into it or not.
