One of the greatest.  Makes me feel old - I was in HS when he was drafted.

I'm not sure we'll see another guy stay in college for 4 years and emerge the #1 consensus pick again.

I remember going to a Spurs game while on vacation in December 1997 (yes, days before Michigan would win the National Championship, which I would watch from Texas). It was a last minute decision to go to the game, but away my family and I went. Boston was visiting.

Before the game even began, these two Boston fans--a father and his teenage son also on vacation--were talking about how overrated Duncan was and how Boston was going to destroy the Spurs. They said this after overhearing me tell my mother Duncan was going to be the next NBA star. So it was like they were talking to me, without actually talking to me lol. You know how that goes, right?

Boston ended up taking a lead at one point and it looked like they were going to run away with it. And during this time, I'm pissed off listening to these two Boston fans gloat about how much Duncan sucks and how Boston was a few years from winning it all. I'm not kidding.

Then all of the sudden, Duncan came alive. He was dunking the basketball, hitting bank shots, driving to the rim, blocking shots, etc.. The best part besides watching a legend in his rookie season dominate the game, was watching the look of defeat on these two fans' faces. They didn't say shit the rest of the game. And of course, I happily reminded my mother that this was an NBA legend in the making.

It sucks to get old. I will miss watching Duncan. I know he wasn't himself the last few seasons, but he still showed flashes of greatness which would bring a smile to my face. Happy retirement to him.

As a Rockets fan this day is bittersweet. While Timmy killed us every game I always rooted for the Spurs in the playoffs sans Rockets. The guy had the sweetest 10 ft bank shot of any big man I've ever seen.

I saw Tim Duncan in person once in 1999 VS Warriors on Spring Break in 1999 visiting my uncle. Tim was a very classy guy knew that he wasn't going to do the farewell I'll miss watching Tim play on TV.
