OT: Tigers/Twins Series

Submitted by Jay on
Let's hope that our Motor City Kitties can take two of three from the Twinkies and finish up this road trip on a positive note.

Really, very few teams have good bottom of the rotations. I did some number crunching a few days ago and every AL team had a #5 starter with an ERA above 5. Our back of the rotation is bad but so is most teams. And, few teams have a Verlander and Jackson at the top of the rotation.

I would agree about most teams' fifth starters, but, our 4th starter (Galarraga) has been horrible for much of the season, too. Porcello is kind of an unknown as we get deeper into the season as well. We don't know how he will react as those innings pile up on his arm. I'm concerned that he really isn't throwing a changeup all that much, either. He's gotten by with only his fastball and a sinker. Will that continue to work?

I wrote this prior to Porcello's last start. He is the guy I am most concerned with. I think people will be pleasantly surprised with Galaragga in the second half of the season. "The question, of course, is can he keep it up. Based on his peripheral stats, that answer would be no. Looking at the majority of the stats, he has been a league average pitcher thus far in the season. His K/9 rate of 5.03 is well below the league average of 6.88. His BB rate of 3.09 is above average, but his K/BB rate of 1.63 is below the league average of 1.93. In fact, it is the 8th worst rate in the AL amongst qualified starters. His HR/9 rate of 1.26 is also high as the league average is 1.04. He has a WHIP of 1.36, which is slightly above average (1.39). His FIP is 4.82, which is well below the league average of 4.32. In fact, of the 42 pitchers in the AL who qualify for these stats (b/c of a certain amount of starts) he has the 36th lowest FIP. According to this Pitch F/x data and analysis Porcello has one great pitch with his sinker, and then has several average pitches. So, what explains his low ERA? Porcello has a BABIP of .280, compared to the league average of .300, and his LOB % is nearly 8% higher than the league average. So, Porcello appears to be helped out greatly by arguably the best defensive infield in the league, and the opposing batters struggling more than normal with runners on base. Will that continue? The latest projections by Zips have him finishing with a 4.48 ERA, nearly a run higher than he is currently allowing. Based on his peripherals, which suggests that he is a league average pitcher other than his ERA, it appears that we might have to be prepared to see Porcello struggle a little bit more than he has in his seamless transition to the big leagues."

More aptly the Tigers suck at the metrodome and it seems like they always have. So far so good today. On this 4th of July weekend maybe a guy like French can lead us to a sweep, after all the French were instrumental in us gaining our independence

I think I would pay a grand just for the right to push the button to blow it up.. In the twins impressive 6 run rally. Crede Homer..no Complaints Young Singe...no complaints Gomez chopper to short thats a DP in every other park...instead just a FC 1 out Miner Walks the 9th hitter hitting 210 Punto WTF Span hits a cue shot that hits the turf and speeds up and away from Cabrera for a Two run Triple. I think its a out in every other park So the inning should be over...Instead we get a metrodome Triple where Anderson misplays it in right from Harris.. Thats 4 outs this inning in most to all other parks. Fi gets Mauer to Sac Fly scoring the tying run Harris. And then gets Morneau out as well.. Well The Twinkies did use their 6 Metrodome outs very nicely. Also, it continues, in the 8th Cuddyer hits a foul ball out to the catcher as a leadoff, but it hits a speaker so he gets a reprieve and gets a leadoff single,he's later erased on a DP, but could have been a huge play. I just hate the Metrodome, it's not really baseball.

Santiago solid Single to left Granderson double laced down the line Polonco Line Single with the infield pulled in. I admit that its not a hit with the infield back Raburn grounder up the middle...This one you have an argument Ordonez soft liner over the 2nd base head... So one maybe out of five? And what is your argument? That in the course of a 16 inning game it will even out? That's great except that baseball isn't supposed to be played 16 innings. So Tigers got 2 runs off the Metrodome while the Twins got 5. I admit the Polonco RBI single in the 14th was a turf single. I can't wait until next year, where the Twins play on a real field and maybe won't play .600 at home while only .415 on the road like this year. .645 last year at home only .432 on the road

This is just a flat out crazy game. Cabrera reaches on a K... Zumaya just absolutely awesome tonight. Now we need Rodney to keep up the good pitching. Win or Loss, I would think that the exhaustion of the bullpens favors us for the rest of the series - Zumaya may be done through Sunday, but he allowed the other relievers to have relatively short outings. Minny's pen has gone 9 innings vs. our 5 (as of now). Plus, we have Jackson and Porcello closing out the series.

This forum has a guy that normally posts a Tigers stream. You'll have to download the TVAnts software. This Site: http://www.myp2pforum.eu/ More Specifically: http://www.myp2pforum.eu/mlb-baseball/ If you poke around that forum you'll find some FAQs on TVAnts. It is fairly easy to use once you figure it out, but there's no guarantee that the stream will actually be worth a shit. But I guess it's better than nothing.

that was an ugly win. But you know what, ugly stadiums deserve ugly wins! Any Metrodome win is huge for us. Glad we snuck out with this one. Hopefully Edwin can go 7 or more tomorrow afternoon. We may need to call a bullpen arm up from the minors soon to help out for a bit. Dolsi and Zoom are probably not available for at least the rest of this series now. Lyon and Rodney both pitched two innings, but barely went over 20 pitches. They should be fine. Edwin hasn't won in 4 starts now. Let's get him one tomorrow! GO TIGERS!!

Nice recovery last night. A loss would've been a disaster after blowing a 7-2 lead. I really think the Tigers will need to add a veteran starting pitcher via trade if they are to stay ahead of the Twinkies and the ChiSox. As frustrating and inconsistent as their hitting can be, I believe they can skate by with what they have (if they have to). It will be very difficult to win this division as long as their 4th and 5th starters are this bad.

I'd love to see Adam Dunn in a Tigers uniform, but, if we trade for a bat, we need someone who can play in the field. Dunn would be a disaster in left field at the CoPa. Jarrod Washburn might be a pitcher that we could get without giving up a ton in return if Seattle were to fall out of the AL West pennant race by the trade deadline.

Glad to see Polanco is playing better. He was such a key contributor during our 2006 playoff run. They need him to have a good second half. It would also make Cabrera's RBIs really soar.

our bats decided not to help Jackson out, once again. Only 2 hits and 0 runs through 5 innings. Tigers are down 2-0. Jackson has allowed just the 2 solo HR's, but he doesn't have command of his pitches today. Still, the lack of hitting when he is on the mound is alarming.

Damn Liriano struggles much of the season but has his two best starts against the Tigers. I just knew this would happen. The rest of the Tigers hate E-jax. So whenever he takes the mound they all agree to turn-in a day of horrible offensive production. That’s the only possible explanation.

soon as I say let's see if they can actually prevent the Twins from scoring after we take a lead...they give it right back. Gotta feel for Edwin Jackson. His teammates just do not help him at all.
