OT: Talking Cars Tuesday - We're Back
After a hiatus, we're back. Just like the Camaro.
Speaking of comebacks - what's the one vehicle that you would love to see a "new" version of? There's a Swiss company that's working on a new Issetta
http://jalopnik.com/a-swiss-company-wants-to-electrically-resurrect-the-ise-1767532983
Did you have a GREAT old car that you'd love a brand-new version of? Figure the company didn't die/get absorbed/etc. Think of comebacks like the Ford GT 40, etc. Anyone want a new TransAm? Think of cars they DONT make anymore - don't tell me you want a new CJ-5 - you can (essentially) get one.
I like the new ones. And let's be honest, a new Hemi Charger is faster than an old 440 six pack.

Then I have three:
1. The GTO - not the fucking stupid Australian piece of shit they tried to pass off from 04-06 as a Goat but a real-live, fire breathing Grand Tourismo Omologato (American style) like the 69 Carousel red Judge.
2. The Trans Am - personally I prefer the 70-73 version of the TA but anything from the mythical 69 RA IV convertable (widely considered the rarest production car ever made) up the 1980 Bandit would be fine by me. Lucere blue with honeycomb wheels if you please.
3. Grand Prix - A 1969 Grand Prix set the record I believe for the longest hood on a production car but I liked the 1974 the best. Drop a 455 in one of those with crushed velour seating and baby you were styling!

I would love to see the mid-1960s LeMans come back as well, if you're going to resurrect Pontiac. We had one - black, 1966 - for years before it was sold to someone up in Oakland County. That was a nice car indeed.
Actually, the reboot of the LeMans as a crappy compact in the mid-1980s was probably the only time I saw my father asolutely fuming at a product launch in his career at General Motors. When he found out that the new one had all of 98 HP, he even refused a test drive.
That my mom drove in the winter and me and my two brothers learned to drive on.
I agree that it probably was a horrible legacy to its muscle car past, but man that car was rock solid and could fit a lot in it for being such a small car. It also got close to 40 mpg. Thing was as basic as you could get. 4 speed with power nothing and only one side view mirror. After buying it used, it still took 3 teenagers and 10 years for us to kill it off.
My dad had 2 and my grandma had 1, although hers had a V6. They were always the poor mans alternative to a GTO or Chevelle.
Dad had a red 1969 with a 400 that I was a whisker away from getting when I turned 16 before my mom stepped in and ruined my dreams. He also had a canary yellow 1970 with a 350 in it. One of the cars I learned to drive in. I did hotrod it a little but never got carried away, everyone in town knew whose car it was and I would have gotten in huge trouble had I done much more than a burnout.
I concur on the GTO Judge making a comeback and the 69 1/2 TA Ram Air. Those were some awesome cars. My dad was obviously a Pontiac man so growing up those were my dream cars and I still love them.....BUT...
I also grew up and became a Mustang man. Yes, I went blue oval. My absolute favorite car to bring back would be the 1969 Mustang Boss 429. Or if I could just have an original that would be fine as rain too. I loved the Mach 1's as well and while the 2003-2004 Mach 1's were pretty sweet they just weren't that much better than a GT, just like the 2013 Boss wasn't that much better than a GT. They did have more power and were nicer but they should have had closer to 100 more HP than a GT.
It was about racing and handling. Especially the Laguna Seca version.
Motor Trend (I think?) did a race between that and an M3. The Boss was 47K, the M3 67K. The numbers at the track, and on the road course, were damned near even.
Of course, the automotive press gave a clear win to BMW. ;-)
Had I the cash I would have bought the LS Boss 302 in a heartbeat.
Nowadays the interesting race would be between the GT-350 and the ridiculous new Camaro that Chevy came out with.

Rebranded Holdens didn't do it for you?
Clearly, they didn't do it for everyone, since they killed the brand. I would love to see them bring back the GTO and a souped up Judge version.

1.I say send over the ute.
2.Call it an El Camino.
3.Watch the money pile up.
March 29th, 2016 at 12:16 PM ^
That might be the only way to improve the blind spots on the crap can.
I'd dump my Silverado in a heartbeat for one of these
but that actually looks pretty cool. jump seats are pointless any way so might as well make big storage in back, and as someone mentioned, should increase visibility.
Loking at the concept above for the 2016 El Camino, it looks like a chevy Sonic front end instead of putting a muscle car front end like you would expect.
It is a 2014 or 2015 Malibu with the top chopped... the back corners near the tail lights give it away. Either way, the Camaro version looks much tougher!!

Those are all well and good and they are excellent ideas, but the list needs to have the Fiero on it too.
if they could drop the 4 cylinder and V6 from the camaro into a mid engine car and bring back the fiero. Not sure if there is enough room to do it, but I just saw an alpha romeo yesterday, and it looked and sounded great. A less expensive Fiero could probably take it.
As the owner of a 90% restored blue 87 GT, I agree.
It's time for an affordable, sporty, mid-engine, American made car again.

Cerberus era SUV or old Diplomat based Sedan?
The SUV was killed for a very good reason. It didn't sell. :-)
I'm a Chrysler guy. Daimler into Cerberus was about as much fun for me as RR into Hoke.
That car wouldn't die. My brother at age 12 replaced the alternator. I remember looking in the engine bay and seeing pavement underneath.

Asking them to change the spark plugs on that car. GM committed what has been considered one of the biggest design flaws in recent memory when it was discovered that the only way to get access to two of the spark plugs was to pull the entire freaking engine out!
Needless-to-say that got corrected in subsequent models but if you owned a 1980 you were screwed come tune-up time.
March 29th, 2016 at 11:29 AM ^
I had an '88 Dynasty with the Mitsu 3.0 litre V6.
I did tune ups on all my cars at the time. I could handle rotor/cap/wires/plugs. Nowadays its beyond me.
*one* plug on the 3.0 litre was under a motor mount. I couldn't get to it at all. I asked the service guys at the dealership and they said I needed a special tool that cost $60. I didn't have $60.
So being a wise college student I put 220k miles on a mitsu with regular replacements of 5/6 plugs...

The 6.2L equipped GM trucks go 0-60 in about 5.5seconds, within a tenth or so of the Cyclone despite weighing a ton or two more!
Anyone wedged the 6.2L into a colorado yet?

confirms to me yet again we live in an auto golden age.
When I was a kid I was all hot and bothered over my uncle's new Mustang GT (The Boss is Back!). It had like 170hp.

You totally stole my answer with the electric Isetta. Other than that I say bring back Saab or AMC. We need more quirky cars that can perform in the world.
March 29th, 2016 at 11:21 AM ^
I think this is on the way. I have a Silverado and it's too big and the Colorado's are kind of ugly and big $'s.
Second Porsche 914 - afforable 2 seat Porsche
Triumph TR6 that is actually reliable

That wish is getting granted. And in terms of the 914 - you've really got the successor in the Boxster. Inflation's a bitch.

It's coming, but sadly it won't look like the concept. probably more mall rated than trail rated.

I had a late 80's Comanche it was a cool small truck. I'd like to see what they make very old Jeep looking and not like any of the new stuff.
March 29th, 2016 at 12:07 PM ^
I loved that basic platform with the 4.0 liter. Tough as hell. Very capable for what it was.
Check this out:

It was a small Jeep 4x4 Pickup with the 4.0, and for a cheap little pickup it was pretty fast. It came with the word "Eliminator". I had to peel those stickers off first thing.

I know there was the "Comanche" concept based off the renegade, but this won't be a faux-truck. FCA is re-tooling the line in toledo to make it Body-on-frame. The success of the Colorado/Canyon are driving this.
March 29th, 2016 at 11:51 AM ^
That would be awesome. Who knows. FCA seems to be at least teasing some cool ideas. Hopefully th follow through will be there.
I almost got killed in a TR6. Family friend who was at West Point had his TR6 out at Fort Lewis one summer when my dad was stationed there. He took me (all 5-6 years of me) out for a spin, and the passenger door opened when we took a turn - he grabbed it shut, preventing me from a grisly death.

A few. The Alfa Romeo GTV-6 hatchback. BMW CSI 3.0. Volkswagen Scirocco. Corvair. They're all sort of variations on the same theme.
