OT - Talking Cars Tuesday - Summer Car

Submitted by JeepinBen on

So, last week I asked about Fun, this week let's discuss your IDEAL Summer car. Don't say "a convertible". Tell me which one and why. Tell me if you want a summer cruiser, a canyon carver, a motorcycle, the perfect road trip van... what is it for you?

Give me a 930 Targa. Room in the frunk for a roadtirip, top down without losing rigidity, enough power to kill myself, and  enough glorious noise that I won't want to. She'd be perfect for a road trip taking no interstates or just taking out for a milkshake on the perfect summer night.

I'd like a motorhome. Not one of those big tour bus style units, just a cutaway van-style that's easy to drive and set up. I'd like to drive all over the country. Hike/bike in Big Sur, Yosemite, Puget Sound, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, SLC, rocky Mountains, UP, and the eastern seaboard. I'll need to borrow someone's RV, along with about $50,000 to hold me over for a few months.

I've had two, a 97 and a 99, and they were both awesome.  The 99 was especially good since it had a little more power and was a bit more refined while still offering the "I'm in a go-kart with airbags" driving experience.

Once kid #1 is out of college I'm getting another one before I have to start paying for #2's education.

Only downside is zero trunk space and the lack of a place for sexy time, other than the hood, which dents easily.

2001 Saleen Mustang Convertible. My grandfather had one while I was growing up. I've always loved Mustangs because of him and this is my favorite one he ever had.

I had an old (1984, I think) Honda Magna. It was a ton of fun and had the same engine configuration as the Interceptor. Fast as shit and awesome.

I too would get a motorcycle. Probably an Indian Chief Dark Horse. They look pretty slick and South Dakota seems to be a little safer when it comes to bikes than the Detroit area.

That said, we have two little kids, so my wife put the kibosh on that plan.

Ha! That's hilarious. Actually, one of the people I work with was recently trying to sell a midnight blue 883 Sportser with a sidecar! I really sold that hard to my wife for our one year old son and 3 year old daughter.

Her response: "uh, fuck no".

I did and it was pretty gruesome. Not sure how you feel about it, but I would never ride without a helmet and full gear. You are asking to donate an organ if you do that.

BTW, hadn't fished much before moving out here, but the river is fantastic. Never thought I would get in to fishing, but damn, I could spend days out there (again, if I could talk my better half into letting me...)

My favorite summer car was the 1984 red Ford Mustang convertible that was loaned to me as a part of my high school graduation gift in 1986. It was so much fun being young feeling like I had the world by the ass.

Sure, there are far better cars. But that one will always be my sentimental favorite.

I was a kid when the Viper first came out.  One of the dads in my neighborhood (I refuse to call it a subdivision) was on the design team.  He brought home the 12th one manufactured and spent all day taking probably 50 kids for a short ride in it.  This was before they were even available for sale.

It was a cool thing to do, but he didn't drive it fast so I was kind of disappointed.  Also he was naked from the waist down, so that was awkward.
