OT: Reddit CFB Risk Update 5/16: Oh So Close

Submitted by ReegsShannon on

Yesterday was a bit of a step forward for us!. We took 5 of the 6 most coveted Northeast territories yesterday and only need one more to seal that off. Also good news, our allies in GT and Texas are closing on OSU and should be spreading them thin, particularly since OSU has lost Columbus and is losing their foothold in the midwest. OSU should be a bit weakened and we are close to kicking them out of the NorthEast and holding them in a vice between us, our allies and chaos!

We want to thank you guys for your participation and encourage you to please continue to be active for only 30 seconds a day!

Here are the official suggested orders for today if you're a non-Discord user and are just following along from these posts:

Instead of using birthdays to give out orders, one of our members created a Michigan Risk website that can quickly direct orders to users. We actually updated the site so that you can now long in through your reddit account. It will simply give you an order to do based on our preferences. This also allows us to protect our orders a lot more!

Please go to michigancfbrisk.com and click on "Get Order!" to get your instruction for the day!

http://michigancfbrisk.com/

Below are a few messages about recent updates with the game and instructions to join and play if you are new.

The creators of the game recently increased the aggressiveness of their bot detection to prevent the use of bots/alternate accounts. If you have created a brand new reddit account to participate in this game, then we need you to check the game page to ensure you don't see the message in below. If you see this, you are being flagged as a bot and your moves are not counting. Please DM reddit.com/u/bakonydraco to get the situation sorted out.

So follow the instructions and contact the r/CFBRisk mods if that happens. Also, the CFBRisk mods have indicated that they may start marking accounts as bots if they aren't "users on R/CFB". So we ask that in order to keep yourself eligible that when you go to vote everyday: just take a look at the CFB subreddit and make a post or two. There should be always something on the front page Michigan-related that you can drop a quick take on.

Instructions to Join:

To join all you need to do is go to reddit.com/r/cfb and create an account if you don't already have one. Next, set your flair to Michigan. You can do this by clicking "Select Flair" on the right side of the cfb subreddit. Finally, you can join and play the game at https://vote.redditcfb.com/cfbrisk.php

If you want to discuss the game in deeper detail and strategize with us, you can join our discord server found here: https://discord.gg/TcZBTcj. We usually announce plans of what we want to attack/defend in the evenings, but we discuss strategy all day. Be warned though, there will be a vetting process to join the discord as we have had some mole issues from OSU. Even if you don’t pass the vetting process, we can still provide less-secret instructions in the general chat so that you can still help us towards our goals until we can fully 100% trust you.

Additionally, we have formed "The Blue Alliance" with Florida, Georgia Tech and Texas. If you would like to meme about this, go to: www.reddit.com/r/CFBRisk/

Go Blue!

Instructions as to how to play:

At the beginning of the game. Every team was assigned one single territory, and so every territory is now named after that team. When you go to select an action in the game, you'll see option such as:

"Defend Buffalo", "Attack Penn State", "Attack Kent State".

This means that we border the location that was originally assigned to Penn State and Kent State. If you choose to attack Penn State, you will attempt to take that piece of land next round. Defend Buffalo, means that we currently own Buffalo's original homeland, and defending Buffalo means putting your stars towards keeping Buffalo from being taken.

After you submit what you're doing for the day, just sit back at wait! At Midnight EST all of the picks from all of the teams go in, and a random number generator selects a winner for each territory. Then it all happens again tomorrow.

How do you get your star raiting up? I've been playing for the last week or so and am still at one star. I've visted all the links and can't seem to get even a second star.

If you look at the box with all of your sub-rankings, it just takes the median.  So, if you have links up to 5 stars, you need to then raise two other categories.  For example, I'm a 3 star because that is by median ranking below based off of turns played.

visit reddit.com/r/cfb

sort the posts by "new".

make witty, self deprecating comments about u of m on the posts.

keep going until you get 50 upvotes combined

go back to the cfb risk game screen and hit the update karma and update ranking buttons a bunch of times.

There are 3 easy things everyone can do to bump up their star rating (very important aspect to the game)

1) The easiest, go to their Link Page and click on all 21 links.  This will automatically bump you to a 5 Star for that section

2) Counter for days playing risk.  At 5 days, you get your 2nd start, at 10 days you get your 3rd star.

3) Karma points, like Up votes here, you are awarded Karma points for posting and getting up voted.  At 50 Karma points, you get your 2nd Star (not sure about the 3rd star yet cause I am not at 50 Karma points yet).  So I proposed that daily we use a post at CFB Reddit and do our own POSBANG.  I just posted over there "What is your teams biggest concern for this year?"

We should go over there and POSBANG to pump up are Karma points.

Getting a minium of 3 start in 3 of the 5 categories puts you at a 3 Star overall.

Star Power = More Power in Risk.....

I was on Reddit today and I just saw a post where some one was accusing "Red Nation" of Karma farming.  Certainly do not want that, but I would believe that one of the benefits the site is getting is increase in web traffic, so there should be some benefit to encouraging people to go over the Reddit and participate in good conversations

I started a thread about "what do you feel is your team's weakest postion?" And was very happy to see a multitude of College Football Fans have nice conversations without the RCMB low life dribble......

Although I’ve grabbed 34 Reddit ‘karma’ in 3 days of posting I need to get to 50 for my second star. If you see Toolsmack post on Reddit give a man an upvote.

When do the orders on the website update?  I got my order this morning which was to attack Temple, but I'm not sure if that reflects the most current strategy.

3 star is not hard - 10 days of playing can do it. Simplying clicking on 20 links (shown in the r/cfb game), getting 500 karma (few days of posts/comments), and playing for 10 turns (one per day) will get total ranking to 3 star from scratch. Four stars is 5000 karma and 20 turns, but I am about halfway there after only playing for 11 turns

For those looking to raise their karma, I'd suggest commenting on M flair comments. Users receive a notification and will likely upvote you. I joined less than a week ago and am at 2 stars and 130+ karma. Seriously, comment on Reddit a few days like you might on here and you'll be there.

Why did we go after the North East and abandon Michigan/the Midwest to OSU, Auburn (?!) and whoever that green/black team is? Is it similar to Australia in regular risk, in that it’s easier to defend with less entry points? Speaking of which, Florida seems to really be sitting pretty geography wise.

From a strategical standpoint, the Midwest is equal to Europe in Risk.  Too many fronts to defend and spreads you forces too thin.

Nebraska had grabbed the NW and UF grabbed the SE, so the last logical foothold is the NE.  Once we secure the NE (kicking out OSU from Connecticutt), we can then strategically expand without opening too many fronts.

The Black and Green team are a consolidation of all the schools that have been eliminated to this point (hence they have the largest contingent)

How the hell did Auburn end up with what looks to be approximately the I-80/90 corridor through Ohio and Indiana? I mean, that's just like switching from one boring place to another in their case.

There's a bot in the discord channel that does all sorts of things like this, including a few easter eggs.  I'm hesitant to publicly post Michigan data on here because I am wary of giving up our competitive advantage.  While I'm sure most teams have something similar with varying degrees of sophistication, we don't want to make things easy for them.  Hey, all the more reason to join the Discord (even if only to lurk)!

Any idea why it says I have zero turns played but when I click on it, it shows my history of 12 turns in a row.  I have also clicked on all the links but that is still a one star also...

And yes, I've clicked the update rating button many times and refreshed sveral times over the past several days.

i have 1 star for karma, 1 for awards, 2 for turns played, and 5 for links explored.... but only 1 star overall. 9/4.. shouldnt i at least have 2 overall?

Remembering middle school math, median is the middle value in an ordered list. So there are 5 categories, you need at least 3 categories to be at 3 stars or above to get a 3 Star median. In other words it’s the 3rd highest category ranking you have.

Easiest way seems to explore links. That’s 5 in one category. Get 50 karma, that’s 3 in a second category. Third category is either awards, age on r/cfb, or playing 10 turns.

If you are new to r/cfb and don’t have a long posting history there, you are stuck basically waiting to get to 10 turns played in the game.

Moron checking in.

My marching orders were "attack connecticut"

Okay, first challenge was remember where CT was.  Once I solved that, I saw that the territory was currently held by Ohio State.  I'd be more than happy to attack those guys.... but it doesn't give me that option.  It shows me other schools I could attack (or defend) but not OSU.

So real slow for the natural blonde:  What am I supposed to do here?

ReegsShannon

May 16th, 2018 at 3:29 PM ^

So the attack/defend buttons correspond to the territories, not which school currently holds the territory. So if you click the UConn button, you will be attacking/defending UConn for that turn. You'd only see an "OSU" button to attack if we bordered their initial home territory (Columbus and the surrounding area).

It doesn’t say the territory name, it just shows the native schools logo.

Click the attack button next to the blue husky dog logo.

Next time you can click a territory, and then on the box on the left below the map it will show the logo and the name of the territory is at the bottom of the box where it says “Connecticut Wiki”. That’s the best way I found to link the territory name to the logo.

The two main alliances are the "Blue" Alliance of which we are a part along with Florida, Georgia Tech, and now Texas.  The Red Alliance is our current adversary and includes Nebraska, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Stanford, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Alabama.

There's also a little bit of a bromance going on right now between some smaller schools in VT, Auburn, and South Carolina as they are all banding together to flee to the Pacific coast to escape the carnage.
