Let's Go Hawks!!!
OT: Red Wings @ Hawks Game 2 Open Thread
I upvoted both of you. I like the banter.
Must be a Northwestern fan
Nope. Just born and raised in Chicago but my family is originally from Grand Rapids as well as Shelby Township. Plus my grandpa, dad, uncle and two cousins attended Michigan which is where I get my Michigan love from. Quite a bit of my family are Red Wings fans though because of originating from Michigan so we have a fun rivalry. I'm not one of those "Detroit sucks" Blackhawks fans because of that reason.
We will forgive you because you probably root for the cubs too
Fu** the Hawks
Wings looking very good to start - a ton of good chances. Really need to put one in, though.
Wings need this game badly. If we get a split coming back to Detroit we're in decent shape. The longer this series goes on for, the more I like their chances.
The wings need to get Cleary off the ice for good. He turns it over and falls down constantly.
Marian Hossa, ladies and gentleman.
Someone jump Hossa for that pansy shit
The Chicago Blackhawks have to be the least appreciated and recognized teams in the Original Six. But then, I have always wondered if Chicago was a bit overrated as a sports city in terms of fan passion.
Are you serious??
He can't possibly be serious . . .
he must have been joking!
Why? You really think anyone gives a shit about the Blackhawks in Chicago? They're relevant now, but Chicago is a front-running sports town.
Yes I do. You must look at Chicago from the outside and not know shit about the die hard fans here.
I have to remind myself that the Blackhawks are an Original 6 team. They easily lack the tradition teams like the Wings and the Habs. And wasn't it just a few years ago that their owner refused to show home games on TV?
Stan Makita, Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull. No tradition.
Yes their horrible owner refused to show home game on tv but that makes the city bad fans when they still supported them? It's not our fault that Bill Wirtz was an egotistical asshole and refused to show home games on tv. This city is full of die hard Hawk fans and when old man Wirtz passed away and his son started running the franchise like it should have been it gained even more fans. Nothing wrong with a fan base growing, but to say that Chicago is a fair weather town when we've sold out stadiums in all sports for years through good and bad(Bulls post Jordan, Cubs, Bears and Hawks during the blackout years) shows your ignorance.
Those hockey players? Known only by your fan base over the age of 50. You haven't sold out your hockey arena until recently. Post-Jordan bulls are an afterthought. Nobody goes to Cubs games to watch baseball. Nobody GOES to White Sox games. The Bears get support in spite of themselves and that deformed spaceship of a stadium. So you got me there. Chin-up! You could still win this game. But, gosh, it'll sure suck to lose this series after you all but gave yourselves the Cup a couple months ago.
For the Blackhawks as an organization, and "lacking tradition" is pretty ridiculous, but the United Center was damn near impossible to fill, at least the times our teams needed to sell 300 section blocks. Unless the Blues or Wings were in town, you pretty much ate the cost of the seats.
I'd also add that there are a ton of fair weather fans that all claim to be lifelong fans despite lacking basic knowledge about team history or hockey in general. The real question is whether there are more than other "long dormant" teams recently finding success, and I have no way of knowing that.
But it's not like five of the Original Six have been excellent since 1942 and they're the outlier. If they have less tradition than Boston, NYR, and Toronto, it isn't by much.
But it's pretty much the Wings and Canadiens and then the other four. Not winning a cup in the expansion era is a big knock on their tradition relative to Detroit and Montreal.
What does Boston have? Two Cups in the seventies? Orr>Hull?
Dammit, they score. 1-0 Hawks.
Maybe because of the injury parade they had going.
Brendan smith is just not ready for this stage yet. Yet he is on the 2nd d pairing.
Smith's play shows why the Wings liked to have their D-men spend a lot of time seasoning in the minors. Perhaps a luxury that isn't available in the salary-cap era?
I would rather see one of Sam Bernstein's children on the ice rather than Brendan Smith
Everytime I hear a goal is scored it is usually preceded by Smith doing something wrong.
As long as "usually" is replaced with "always."
Letting Hossa go and signing the Mule to a never ending contract will be the major mistake of Ken Holland's career
You realize that we traded Leino away right? And that he was a healthy scratch every other night?
That's not why Leino was let go, and if I remember right he was traded. Leino sucked and was only good for one year in Philly.
You must have watched a different game. All I am seeing is the wings being taken to pound town unfortunately. More of the same from game 1. This is going to be a short series. :(
Pound town? The Wings played good period and it certainly wasn't like the last 2 periods in game 1. I'm really not certain what you saw that makes you think we were getting pounded in that period.
Light the lamp!
Scoring aside, I think the key stat thusfar is that we're outshooting the Hawks. It would be a very quick series if we were anything close to the shot-line from Game 1.
Brunner tipped it?
Is the 5-cylinder engine an inline set up or a V?
What a big period for the Wings. And to cap it off with a goal was beyond huge.
Now we just have to avoid our newfound 3rd period meltdowns and we'll have taken over home ice advantage.
Great shot. Great aggression.
What a pass! And what a shot!!
I don't watch hockey often, but it feels like this game is slow to me. Could that just be because the crowd isn't into the game AT ALL and i'm used to a more rowdy wings crowd when they are at home?
That's because Chi-town fans will give up quicker than anyone. Ask Brown Bear.
I prefer 4-1 red wing playoff victories. Stay thirsty, my friends.
Great hustle Zeddeeberg.
Looks like we've got ourselves a series. ;)
yes! gotta get both at home now
of course the wings that annoy me the most (Franzen, Smith, and Filpula) are the ones scoring...Oh, well. I will take it. Go Wings!!!
I complain all season about Franzen then he makes me look foolish in the playoffs.
Fox Sports Detroit for the Post Game. Great game. See you Monday at the Joe.
Go Red Wings
WOO HOO! Series tied! Comin' back to the D, the Joe's gonna be rockin'!
would take this game. Not sure they can take the series but wonderful to see this display. Howard can win this.
Team looked good early on in Game 1, and finally were able to put it together for a whole game. This will probably go 6-7 games regardless, so it is good to at least steal one on the road.
Excellent. Just got back from the game...Wings played a great one. Total reversal of game 1. Go Wings Go!!
is 1 billion times the better hockey crowd than Chicago. Good gawd they are awful, and they weren't even good in the first game.
National anthem, detroit sucks, yay our team scored followed by tired stupid song, then nothing.
Fans were nice, though. In fact, some Hawks dudes brought a bottle of Jameson into the game and were sharing with us Wings fans.
Was also at the game. Fans were terrible. They yell Detroit sucks over and over again. It's as if they care more for Detroit to lose than for Chicago to win. Very little brother-ish. Great win though and the energy in that building dissipated in the 2nd, it was beautiful.
I never stopped believing for a second!
completely took Towes (sp?) out of the game. Z going to lock him up for the rest of the series.
Our rookie line is hungry and fast...those guys are going to be good.
