OT: NYT on the apogee of Detroit sports
Interesting spotlight on what once was...
When Detroit Was on Top of the Sports World https://nyti.ms/2KlZ7Av
...and will likely never be again.
Off to google apogee.
Ditto
Was it properly used by the OP?
In my opinion, OP can be pedantic, he can be pedantic.
I initially was going to use "Golden Age," but I tend to consider the 1950s more apropos, as I'm inclined to elevate the Red Wings and Lions.
1997 was pretty special for Michigan sports.
'35 certainly was a pinnacle on the early summit of Detroit sports and one of the earliest examples of sports bringing a city together in tough times.
The 50's were a "zenith" with dominating franchises in the early era of sports tv. '84-'08 was the "Golden Era" with all four franchises having multiple playoff years and 3 out of 4 ain't bad for championships.
And since '08 its been the darkside of the moon :(
Good news is perigee was in '09 and we didn't explode so it's just a matter of time before the stars realign to unlock four concurrent professional championships ;)
Great read. Love Detroit.
The pro sport scene has been rough here ever since the Tigers collapse. I have been waiting for the wings to make a comeback, the pistons had a bit of life this past season and the Tigers still have a long way to go before they become decent again. I don't have much hope for the Lions but the law of averages would suggest they should make it to the superbowl in the next 5 years. I think Michigan football is still on an upswing. Harbaugh doesn't have the team where he wants it yet but I think goals this year should include beating OSU at home.
You know, this IS the year the Lions go undefeated
Wow I did not know that there was once a Red Wing named Scotty Bowman who was not 'that' Scotty Bowman.
There wasn’t. That was clearly an error (likely it was meant to be Ralph Bowman), but the likeness is so uncanny that it is understandable (in a way)!
1997 was the best Michigan sports year in my lifetime. 1st National Championship for Michigan since 1948, 1st Stanley Cup for the Red Wings since 1955, Charles Woodson's Heisman and Barry Sanders tops 2000 Yds in one season.
I was working OK at the time but made it up for the IA game. That was a close one but Michigan INT Iowa's final drive when they got inside the 30. Only disappointing part was how the coaches poll jumped NE over us since Osborne announced his retirement.
Wow, I had no idea Detroit teams had ever done this.
It's sad, though, to read about how Detroit was once the fourth-largest city in the country.
By the time I was 28 I saw my Det/MI teams win 10 championships. That was a good run.
Thanks for the link, what a great article. I would love to see my Detroit teams back competing for championships again.
