Has there been a more individually embarrassing game-losing moment in nfl history? Honestly curious...
September 13th, 2020 at 4:29 PM ^
Must have been in the entire history, but not in recent memory. They had a 98.3% win probability with 5 min left in the game. Unreal.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:30 PM ^
There is no objective way to evaluate this mathematically, but the split second when the ball hit him in between the numbers in the chest with six seconds left, the win probability had to be over 99%.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:35 PM ^
I think they use a statistical method known as montecarlo simulations to get these estimates. But I'm sure an Mgo-statistician would know better and can explain.
Whatever calculation used, this was just an absurd collapse.

I texted some buddies when they were leading 23-6. "The Lions are going to have to work really hard to lose this one, but I have confidence. They will lose. Just and see". I don't enjoy being accurate when it involves the Lions, but they are so pathetic and so predictable.
September 13th, 2020 at 6:06 PM ^
Atlanta losing to the Pats a few years ago had to have plenty of them too.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:26 PM ^
This is very Big Ten of me, but you HAVE to punt instead of kicking a 55 yard FG up 10 with 4 to go. Even if you make it you're just encouraging the other team to score TDs instead of doing dumb NFL coach things and playing for OT. If you miss, they get the ball on their own 45.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:32 PM ^
Would not have mattered. The Lions would’ve just created an alternate path to defeat. It’s the Detroit Lions story.
September 14th, 2020 at 9:11 AM ^
Correct, all punting would have done is make the Bears 3rd TD of the 4th be with 3 seconds left instead of over a minute. The end result is the same.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:26 PM ^
Lions blow the lead/game in unreal fashion. Nature is healing.
September 13th, 2020 at 5:18 PM ^
Double post
September 13th, 2020 at 5:19 PM ^
Not unreal for the Lions
I believe it is called Ford-ian Fold. Not too dissimilar from an Ankle Grabber.
September 13th, 2020 at 6:13 PM ^
Haha. This is what will reverse all the weird sh*t from 2020. Lions losing this way is typical.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:27 PM ^
As soon as they got the lead, they played to not lose instead of playing to win, they went away from everything that was successful for them. It’s mind boggling (bottling?). I just can’t wrap my head around the absolute predictability of the calls. Why not run a draw on 3rd and 6 with 2:40 left, when you absolutely know they are dropping everyone in coverage, and at worst you force them to use a timeout and flip the field if you have to punt? Fuck this.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
Play calling sucks, players making mental mistakes, I could go on but you know the drill.
September 13th, 2020 at 5:04 PM ^
In the same post you said they made an error in going conservative and playing not to lose. Then directly follow that by saying they should have played not to lose and ran a draw instead of throwing the ball going for the win.
Honestly I think the interception helped the Lions. They had no corners left Chicago was going to go down and score. The pick gave the Lions a shot at a game-winning drive. Which of course they Lion'd away.
September 13th, 2020 at 8:51 PM ^
No, I didn’t. If you’re referring to me hoping they’d play a draw on 3rd, that’s being not predictable, as well as “if” you’re trying to waste clock, which obviously they were, waste clock. Don’t be an asshole, say something productive and give insight.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:27 PM ^
So far the draft paying great dividends. Okudah doesn't even play and Swift drops the easiest TD catch imaginable.
September 13th, 2020 at 6:33 PM ^
I didn't even watch. Only interest I have in Okudah is keeping an eye on what a bust he will be before having one good season for his next team & getting a massive contract, then getting benched.
Pretty sure he'll have a career that makes Eli Apple look like a good pick.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:28 PM ^
I listened to most of the game on the radio including the ending. I don't know why I like the Detroit Lions.
September 14th, 2020 at 7:44 AM ^
Nobody "likes" the Lions! We are all just doomed to root for them based on an accident of birth and some foolish commitment to what we think is fandom. I've was raised on the Lions and watched them break my father who after 50 years can no longer stomach it (I believe the Dallas playoff loss is what finally did him in a few years back). I can't really say I root for them anymore (what is the point) but I reluctantly tune in year after year because the faint glimmer of hope that kindles every off season hasn't yet been snuffed out. I few more decades and I'm sure I'll be just like my old man. I'm pretty sure they will never be anything other than what they've always been. Chokers!
September 13th, 2020 at 4:28 PM ^
The only reason I watch the Lions anymore is out of sheer morbid curiosity as to how they will piss away the game. Today was very impressive. What a joke.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:29 PM ^
Kudos - This is how you keep your sanity while watching the inevitable.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:47 PM ^
We must enjoy the pain of being a lions fan?
September 13th, 2020 at 4:28 PM ^
You said it. No NFL team loses the way they do. 23-6 lead in 4th, should never lose a game. Then you give up lead, have a chance to salvage game and your promising rookie RB drops a ball in the end zone. They not only crush you once, they do it again as they stomp on your face with the easy drop.
September 13th, 2020 at 5:06 PM ^
They've regressed. At least in last year's opener, they blew a 17-point 4th quarter lead to salvage a tie.
September 13th, 2020 at 5:24 PM ^
Believe it or not they actually won the opener in 07 against the bears by scoring 34 in the fourth to win. I believe they were down 20 points.
edit not the opener and only down 4.

It is comforting that despite the changes and upheaval in 2020, the Lions still know how to find a way to lose
September 13th, 2020 at 4:29 PM ^
A sign that 2020 is returning to normal.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:29 PM ^
Watching TB vs NO - So much better to watch without the fake crowd noise. Lions need to lose that.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:30 PM ^
How do they do any better than a 6 win season? I've heard 9 and 7-NO WAY!
Lions suck, two bad teams were playing at Ford Field today and the Lions won the worst team award. Adrian Peterson was superb.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:39 PM ^
Maybe if they go 9-7, the front office will come to their senses and fire Patricia, like they did with Caldwell?
September 13th, 2020 at 4:45 PM ^
Dude if they can’t beat Chicago, we’re looking at 1-2 wins.
September 13th, 2020 at 8:00 PM ^
Tank for Trevor?
September 13th, 2020 at 4:31 PM ^
I quit rooting for the lions years ago . Its way much more fun and fulfilling to hope they lose , or rather count on them to lose .
Its just a matter of time , each season . Whether they lose games they should win or the season takes a downfall after it starts out promising .
I used to be a fan . Went to games at the Silverdome all the time . I was at their lone playoff victory in the 90's
After Barry left i had no reason to watch them .
I think their fortunes are tied to ownership .
Once the Fords are no longer in charge things might change .
September 13th, 2020 at 4:48 PM ^
Lol, see you in 2150
September 13th, 2020 at 4:59 PM ^
I made the same decision about 15 years ago. Absolutely no regrets.
September 13th, 2020 at 5:06 PM ^
I quit following around the time Barry left. Now I tune in occasionally to laugh or if I want a nap. They usually put me to sleep.
I may have started watching/ rooting for them if they had drafted Tua.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:32 PM ^
Detroit detroited that game. Anyone expecting the RB to catch that pass hasn’t been paying attention for the last 65 years.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:32 PM ^
The play calling was very Lloyd Carrish down the stretch.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:36 PM ^
Lloyd Carr didn't have losing seasons. The Lions do and will again this year.
September 13th, 2020 at 10:45 PM ^
Totally. No lead was ever too small for Lloyd.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
I don't know how much it contributed to the loss, but getting tossed after head-butting an official is certainly a novel idea for the Lions to try.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
If you're a Lions fan (poor you ... ouch) you need to do what I did eons ago (in high school) and turn this on its head.
It's darkly awesome to watch the Lions fuck up. There are worse teams (in terms of W-L) but I don't think any are as painful as the Lions.
For the Nth time: Fords, please sell the team.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:35 PM ^
Oh...the Lions lose the same way almost every game, they just shuffle the names around. You can almost call it sitting on the couch.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:36 PM ^
Always finding new ways to shit the bed.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:46 PM ^
The Lions have shit the bed so many times in my lifetime that it's no longer a bed—it's a gigantic open pit latrine that never gets limed.
September 13th, 2020 at 4:37 PM ^
That game was the most normal thing of 2020
September 13th, 2020 at 4:42 PM ^
It's actually strangely reassuring.
September 13th, 2020 at 5:11 PM ^
Post of the year material. Well said.
