OT- NFL to host Veteran Players Combine
As the title says, the NFL will hold a Veteran Combine. This will happen in March. Players will have to apply for the combine, and about 100 will be selected.

I think this is a win-win. Free agent veterans get to work out for all interested teams at once, NFL teams get to directly compare the veterans to each other, and the fans get something to watch. Also, because it is self-selecting, it will really serve as an opportunity for veterans who might otherwise be overlooked.

I initially thought this was a different type of Veterans.

I thought it was going to be a really cool way to try and find NFL spots for Army Veterans or at least some camp invites. But, I like this idea quite a bit as well.

Better?

Sure, it didn't bother me in the first place, I was just confused.

I wish the draft were in March / April. By May I'm not in the NFL mood.

I usually just watch until the Lions make their first round pick. Of course, in years past this pick was most often very early in the round. Not sure I can maintain interest until pick 23 this year!

There was nothing better than when the first 3 rounds were all day Saturday.

I think we were all more excited for drafts when UM picks were all over the board.

Hoping Woodson is there to destroy all comers...

Makes sense. Will hopefully allow a couple of useful guys a chance to impress.

I think it could also hurt some guys who arent physically impressive, but can actually play well

if nothing else, this could be a very interesting thing to study. how will the combine impact the money particular players end up getting? how much value will teams put into these numbers? how will players age (their pre-draft combine numbers compared to their free agency numbers)?
i dont know too much about the process NFL teams use to workout free agents and maybe they already use 40 yard dash times/shuttle times/broad jumps/bench jumps/etc. but i kinda doubt it since free agents arent going to camps to train for their workouts like they do with the draft...i wonder if this will impact the kind of playing shape free agent players get into physically for their upcoming seasons

it would give the opportunity to compare a player's combine now vs his college combine. it would be interesting to see the areas of improvement or decline.

It'd be pretty funny if he did even worse. I mean, he's still Tom Motherfucking Brady.
January 15th, 2015 at 5:08 PM ^
I highly doubt that Tom -- or any big name free agent -- would touch this event with a 10-foot pole. There's no upside for guys who are already sought after.

IF Brady was a free agent this off season, and IF he participated, he could walk the 40 and demand to only participate in the linebacker skill drills, and still get paid.

I would love to see Chris Johnson run the 40 again, too bad hes not a free agent!

that was my inital thought. why do teams need to watch players go through these things agan? they screw things up enough the first time lol

I agree with you to an extent. You have to imagine that, as we go through time, more sophisticated performance measures have been invented. That said, the NFL approaches change like an infant -- crying, kicking, and screaming.
One thing I'll note on the 40 yard dash, though...I know it is measured in increments, so they can see how a player is accelerating.
Here's an article with information on the different drills (just Googled it):
