OT - New Video Game Suggestions PS3

Submitted by clarkiefromcanada on
Hello MGoBlogosphere, I don't much post new topics but I am fairly vexed despite reading a lot of online reviews etc. I am a PS3 owner and just got done with Fight Night Round 4. I am needing a new(er) or overlooked classic game to occupy my time for a few months until the launch date of God of War III. I basically buy a game and play it until I beat it and buy a new one after. I am open to pretty much any genre but with the kids etc. it's difficult to rent/check out games. I have been looking at Fallout 3 but have limited knowledge of RPG type games. Anyway, game suggestions would be helpful. Thanks everyone.

I don't own a PS3 but my Fiancé's little sister does. She only has one game for it (they basically use it for Bluray). Its called Little Big Planet. Its a really fun game and definitely kid safe from what I've seen.

In my mind the best part of Little Big Planet is the community of level-building users who are always finding new ways to develop interesting and fun levels. LBP comes with a level-builder that allows you to use all of the same tools the game creators did to make your own levels and upload them for others. Basically it guarantees that you will not run out of levels to play until everyone else abandons the game.

The create and share tools are the most integral parts of the game. Essentially, you can make pretty much anything you want (so long as it's not inappropriate) and if you have the patience/imagination, you can make really great stuff. I don't have it, but the online levels can be excellent. The water feature that just debuted just made the game's possibilities endless, they just made the game ten times better. Excellent feature (for 5.99 extra). Get LBP, it's the best game made solely for PS3 (that is, if you play games that aren't sports or SHOOT KILL DOMINATE NUKE FTW!!!)

I'm playing Demon's Souls right now... The game is ridiculously deep and time consuming but vastly rewarding. -Fallout 3 is one of the best games on this generation systems. -Uncharted 2 is undoubtedly the Game of the Year. The single player was one of the best ever, and the online system is absolutely additive. -Classic: Metal Gear Solid 4 is in a tie as the best game on the system with Uncharted 2. If I were you, I would play Uncharted 2, simply cause it's downright AMAZING. Then I would play Fallout 3 if you had an insane amount of time... or Demon's Souls if you have hard core gamer skills and can handle a high level difficulty RPG

The game lasted a lot longer than the first one, and it was far less repetitive. I found myself completing all of the side missions in order to make it last longer. It was just a cool game. I estimate that it took somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 hours to complete. You would not regret this purchase, but if you could rent it for two or three weeks, that might be even better.

I can personally (and highly) recommend Batman: Arkham Asylum. Whether or not you are a fan of the caped crusader's comics or films, the game is excellent. I just got my PS3 in October and this is the game I come back to most. It's only a single-player game, but when my friends come over we like to play the callenge rooms in de facto pass-the-controller multiplayer. Fallout 3 is really good, too, although it is really buggy and (it seems) at this point Bethesda has given up patching it. Some (cheap) not-so-new games I bought and really enjoy: Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4, BioShock, Burnout Paradise, Critter Crunch, Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (I love that title), and Echochrome. Games like Flower and Flow are excellent for anybody, as well.

Fallout 3 is one of the greatest games ever made.Easily in my top 5 all time. I'm typically not an RPG fan either.I'm actually having a hard time thinking of another I enjoyed...Deus Ex many years ago I guess might qualify. It's more a shooter with just the right ammount of RPG.Not to say it's lacking in the RPG elements. They're just well done and not bad about bogging down the gameplay. It starts out slow.I almost gave up on it shortly after leaving the vault(for those in the know).I'm glad I didn't. The characters,atmoshphere,gameplay,etc... It's almost like a collection of the truly great short stories(within the same world/theme)...That you play through. I could go on and on.It's an amazing game.

Fallout 3 was just so damn much fun. I wouldn't even call it an RPG so much as a strategic FPS with some RPG elements (leveling, town exploring and such.) Metal Gear Solid: 4 is one of the greatest pure experiences I've ever had with a video game right up there with Chrono Trigger and Super Castlevania. I also really enjoyed Bioshock and Assassins Creed 2.

NHL 10. There is a reason NHL 09 won sports game of the year. NHL 10 is just a slight tweek and just as good. I love the customization of NHL 10. I have all of the wings songs uploaded including the song the wings come out to.

Hmmm funny this game is still better than any EA BBall game. Cool thing about CH 2k8 is you can file share and get updated roster. So, on a 3 year old game I have the updated roster with names of every single Div. 1 BBall team. The one I downloaded... they did really good job on getting the correct attribute, size, and facial look. Someone had a lot of time on his hand.

Assassins Creed II - Awesome game. NBA 2k10 or NBA live 10, depending on your preference. Both are good NBA games. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 if you like first person shooters. (though not kid friendly) NHL 10 - I'm not even a hockey fan and I find it fun. My favorite game on my PS3 is MLB: the show, so if you like baseball I definitely suggest you purchase MLB 10: The Show when it comes out in March. Its in my opinion the best sports game series out there right now.

Fallout 3 is mediocre. It has an inane storyline, unbelievable characters, and generally poor writing. The VATS system is essentially the "I Win!" button. It doesn't hold a candle to the originals. As for some recent recommendations, Assassin's Creed 2 is a noticeable improvement on the original, Dragon Age is definitely worth playing, and Arkham Asylum is probably the best game of its genre in recent memory.

In regards to the overarching story I might agree. The individual stories within the game are excellent though IMO. VATS isn't an "I win button".It's limited,it's effectiveness is based on weapon and skill level, and most importantly it's 100% optional(I didn't use it much). Couldn't disagree more on the characters and writing(although the voice acting could be hit or miss).Surreal maybe, not "unbelievable".

I can't believe you didn't use VATS much. IMO the first person shooting mode was one of the weakest aspects of the game. So clunky. I still love that game, though, bugs and all. I just needed to take a break for a while, it's pretty bleak. That's probably why I'm all over these boards all of a sudden. Hello.

The FPS aspect could have definately used more...Polish? It would have been nice if they had dropped VATS and focused on it more.I still prefered to use it as much as possible over the VATS. I'm a big FPS fan to begin with though.Mostly the more realistic(and "oldschool" at this point) shooters(OFP,GR/GRIT,R6,etc)...So I'm kinda use to what most would call "clunky". The inability to look down the sights was probably my biggest complaint with the FPS-ing.

If you like online play call of duty modern warfare 2 has one of the best. I have also played Assassin's Creed 2 and it was good but I was not blown away like some people said they were.

I have a 360, but ive played COD on PS3 too, the campaign is actually pretty fun and engaging as well. Also, I think there's an option when you first play the game to make it less gory (i may be totally wrong). Anyways, I just got into COD after playing Halo for years, but its very addicting. Anyone else play online on 360 on here?

Removing the airport mission arguably (I HAVE NOT PLAYED MW2) strips the game of its true artistic merit: that it makes you feel guilty for shooting people. Again, I never played it, but how many "bad guys" have you mercilessly killed up to that point with no consideration for them, and then when some digital dudes are "coded" as "good" suddenly players didn't want to shoot. That's brilliant.

I get where you're coming from, but that mission was just horrible. I know its just a game, but I just felt awful after playing. Totally unexpected and I feel unnecessary. Other than the airport, an awesome game. Spec ops is great coop mode. Me and my friend played the evasion mission over and over.

But I feel like you're supposed to feel terrible. Isn't that the point? After all, it's a game where you master all sorts of real-life ways of killing people. If we're going to discuss modern warfare, shouldn't we address the reality beyond what caliber rifles the Navy SEALs use? I think the developers knew that they had to really put you in a tough position in order to drive that point home, because in the other missions (I assume) you are given no reason to feel guilt for your enemies, because they are "bad guys", and the game is supposed to be entertaining. In the "No Russian" mission, you become the bad guy, albeit undercover, and you have to shoot the innocent people. There's no way around it, right?

COD: Modern Warfare 2 - Unbelievable graphics and game is probably the best online experience I have ever played (so addicitive.) Negs- Actual game is pretty short, but online makes up for it. Metal Gear Solid 4 is unreal and it takes a good amount of time to get through. Uncharted 1 and 2 are both spectacular games. NCAA FB 10 - Super fun and the dynasty mode with recruiting is SO much fun. NHL 10 - Sweet game, but I found it to be frustrating at times (my fault, not the games.) I have heard great things about Bioshock, but have yet to play it. I think I might go get it tomorrow actually...

Bioshock is worth it. The sound design in that game is excellent -- whenever new enemies are remotely within range they immediately sound as if they are stalking you from behind, leading me to frequently spin around scared during the first parts of the game. edit: I also bought Braid just last night and it too is an awesome game, now on sale for $7.49 on the PSN store.

I say MW2 all the way if you like FPS games. That's about the only non-sport game I play. I recommend NCAA 10, NCAA Basketball 10, and MLB:The Show. Also, I've played a game called Warhawk. It's a massive multiplayer game that can have a ton of people in it. There is no campaign though.

the guys are right NHL '10 or hell even '09 if it's just a time killer game is absolutely AWESOME. IME MLB '09 The Show is the best PS3 specific game ever created, it's worse than fucking crack. you can easily lose 7 hours of your day, every day, on the "road to the show" function of the game.

NCAA football of course, but get Warhawk. It's a multiplayer-only game that is awesome and stacks up easily to Halo. Half-Life 2 Orange Box isn't too bad either. Of course, you need GTA 4, but that's not overlooked. Also, if your PS3 plays ps2/ps1 games, I would get Mega Man and Sonic collections. The Mega Man ones are a little hard to find but you can find them for around $20-30 on ebay. Just got Mega Man collection with 1-8 and two other games, also after the Mega Man X collection. You can also get Mega Man 9 on the Playstation Store. It is amazing. I love the PS3 games, but nothing beats the old school platformers.

If you don't have a backward-compatible PS3 (like me, I got the slim) you can still get Sonic on blu-ray. "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" is a great find, it has all the genesis Sonic games as well as loads of other great genesis games. And if you're into that sort of thing, you can earn trophies as you play old games, which is kind of cool. Looks like it can be had for about $25 on ebay.
