OT: Nerd Alert - Top 5 College Fight Songs

In an effort to get this in prior to the non-OT season, what are your top 5 college fight songs?

Here are mine, in order:

  1. Michigan - The Victors (of course)
  2. Auburn - War Eagle
  3. Alabama - Yea, Alabama
  4. Georgia Tech - Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech
  5. Texas A&M - Aggie War Hymn

A lot of SEC representation here for me but I think ND is a bit overrated as well as USC (overplayed) and none other in the Big Ten stand out to me, really.

It may be blasphemous, but I always appreciated MSU's fight song. 

That said, I don't think anything comes a close second to The Victors.  Maaayyybeee, On Wisconsin.

You know, I liked MSU's fight song so much when I was a kid, I made up my own lyrics:

Go right through MSU
Watch the other team's points keep growing
Spartan teams are bound to lose 'cuz they drink too much booze
Rah! Rah! Rah!
See our team is weakening
We're going to lose this game...
Fight! Fight! Go team fight!
Victory for MSU's opponent!

Not all the words fit that well with the music, but it's still fun to sing.

Obviously the Victors stands alone but their are other team fight songs I'm ashamed to admidt I like a little bit

1. Notre Dame's Victory March

2. Michigan State's Fight Song

3. On Wisconsin (my Elementary school Webster in Pontiac, Michigan actually stole the melody from this for our "fight song")

4. Tennessee's Rocky Top

5. USC's Fight On (hate hearing it in Rose Bowl's though)

Small world.  I grew up on Ottawa Dr in the heart of Indian Village in Pontiac.

The amazing thing is I can still remember the words to that damn song now almost 50 years since I last sang it...(to the tune of On Wisconsin)

My method of countering the ND fight song is to always treat it as the quadratic formula song:
X equals negative b
Plus or minus the square root of
B squared minus 4 A C
All over 2 A

And for you can fill the ~3 beat rest with something derogatory about Notre Dame

3. Fight On with Tribute to Troy intro (USC)
4. Rocky Top (Tennessee)

Honorable Mention: Minnesota.  Have no idea what ski-u-ma means, but it's a catchy tune.

1. Oklahoma - not only stolen from Yale, but the 'lyrics' - yeesh.

In the 40's there was a popular novelty song (By Kaye kaiser I think) that went

Yabba dabba dabba dabba said the Mondey to the chimp,  The note progression for the Yabba dabba dabba dabba  was the same as MSU's first few notes, just broken into 4 notes for each tone instead of one.

Get out of my head. That's almost exactly the post I was going to write. Except mine doesn't have ND at 2:

4. Far Above Cayuga's Waters (not technically a fight song, but it's on my UM band Greatest College Marches CD, so I'm calling it good)

I also think Oklahoma's is the worst, for the reasons you named.

I think a much better topic would be 5 of the worst fight songs....because there's soooooooo many to choose from. Seriously. Watching so many different schools over the season, I hear their fight songs and they sound like a theme song to a children's TV show, somewhere along the lines of Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants. Then I try to picture the football players singing the song in the locker room afterwards and they must get rewarded a cookie and an apple juice.
