Cover story is this "football" murder along side some high school teacher having sex with a 17-yr old. What a state! I guess they miss sex and football early and often

"Shepherd said Briskey drank multiple shots of liquor during the game..."

In June of 1963, Gov. George Wallace did his famous/infamous "stand in the schoolhouse door" to prevent three African-American kids from becoming the first black students at the University of Alabama, which had actively worked to prevent the admission of qualified black students. After the Alabama National Guard at the scene were federalized by President Kennedy, Wallace stepped aside after delivering his speech in defense of segregation.

Now, fifty years later, African-Americans are killing each other over a perceived lack of support of the University of Alabama. It's a peculiarly crazy form of "progress."

Forgive me.

but also part of the master plan? Orwell saw this coming: “So long as they (the Proles) continued to work and breed, their other activities were without importance. Left to themselves, like cattle turned loose upon the plains of Argentina, they had reverted to a style of life that appeared to be natural to them, a sort of ancestral pattern...Heavy physical work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult.”

As an OSU fan, I want to get over the feelings that I cannot quite control.   I don't want to hate Michigan, really.  That conditioning from youth feels familar and comforting, but it's unhealthy, like recreating dysfunctional family models in a failed marriage.   Coming to terms with loss is developmentally a challenge, as I see in our five year old.   But in many ways it's far more important than enjoying winning.

Every fan base has whacked people that lay claim to the local team.  I would not stereotype folks with a broad brush.  I've lived in south Texas now for 20 years, and I have met some of the smartest and kind hearted people that I've ever met.  In fact, I've found most southern folk to be very friendly and hospitable people.  Are there trailer park trash idiots?  Sure - just like any state.

We lived in Baton Rouge for 6.5 years.  Overall, it was a very good experience.  Can't really say anything bad about it, except for the weather.   Our three sons attended an excellent grade school that had great academics.  When we returned to Michigan, we found our kids were a year ahead of the local curriculum.
