OT: MLB trade deadline a week away

Submitted by Rodriguesqe on

The trade deadline is Aug 1.

65 games left. Tigers are 6 back of Cleveland and 4.5 games back of 2nd wildcard spot.

Rumor had it we were looking at Rich Hill.

Lynn Henning wrote a (probably purely spececulative) article about trading Verlander.

Avila has said we'll likely stand pat.

What would you do?

Me personally I'd hate trade Verlander without getting a pretty good prospect back. His value will likely not go higher and he's never going to be worth the money, but I've always been a fan and would like to see him retire a Tiger.

As for the rest, no way I'd trade young talent to add to the waste of a season it has been. We may never know what happened last year with Dombrowski but if Avila said the team could win now I'd fire him after the season is over.

Verlander's contract makes me think he's next to unmovable.

I think we stand pat for the most part, unless we can get something easily. I'd hate to see us trade all our prospects... Again.

Verlander's contract actually isn't that bad, considering what the pitching market did last winter, and given what is available this coming winter. He's signed for 3 more years at $28M/per, with an option for 2020 if he finishes in the top 5 of the 2019 Cy vote. And if you look at his numbers over the past 12 months, they're pretty darn good (WHIP just over 1.00).

I've said it before, but at the risk of beating a dead horse, the contract that is going to kill us is Miggy's. We're tied to him until 2023, with $214M still to come after this year.

But it's not going to be like last year, where we had 3 pending FA's that we got some talent for. We're not likely to get a haul that approaches that.

I do not care what happens this trade deadline, but I cannot wait until the day that Romine and Aviles are not both on the same bench. One crappy utility player is enough, no need to have two on the roster. Oh, and both are in the starting lineup today, playing CF and RF. Horrible. I get that the game was delayed and such yesterday, but this bench needs to improve fast. JD returning will help.

That probably is worth noting about JD. The pitching has picked up and the bats have gone cold. If he came back hot and gave the team a jolt a little run is plausible. And this team really is just one little run away from getting back into it.

But this team has had a knack for falling on their face everytime it looked like they might have something going.

The only player I think the Tigers would consider trading, and who would definitely help a ball club in the hunt in Kinsler, but I hope that doesn't happen. Maybe K-Rod. Otherwise, I think they do stand pat, or if they decide to go for it they could get one more starter and hope Zimmerman comes back and pitches like he did earlier in the season. The bullpen is coming together. There is no position in great need of a player, assuming JD comes back. Just another starter to round out Verlander - who they won't trade - Zimmerman, Fulmer, Norris/Boyd/Pefrey.

Team had too many holes to truly compete. Trade away players who have value, shed long term salary, and begin the over due rebuild

I can understand not making a big move, especially when Drew Pomeranz costs the number 18 prospect in all of baseball. However I'd be upset if we don't at least get an improvement over Aviles. The guy has been unwatchable and could be replaced by Romine. A 25th man utility player or backup outfielder shouldn't cost anything crazy.

their deadline move

1B - Miggy

2B - Kinsler

SS - Iglesias (.250 hitting, good glove)

3B - Nick

LF - Upton (.270 in July)

CF - Maybin

RF - JD

DH - Victor

C - at least OK defensively with 14 HR and 50 RBI between them)

SP - Verlander, Zimmerman, Fullmer, with a combination of Norris, Boyd, Pelfry at 4 & 5 - maybe just go with the 2 kids to see what they do

Bullpen with K-Rod as the closer, Justin Wilson, Greene, Rondon, Alex Wilson and Ryan (Sanchez for long relief/blowouts) isn't all that bad since Greene has moved there

get Zimmerman and JD back and ride the kids in the 4 & 5 slot - don't make a move IMO

only old guys in the line-up are Miggy, Kinsler and Victor - Victor has 2 more years then MIggy to DH

other than JV, K-Rod and Zimmerman (30), the rest of the pitchers I mention we should use are under 30 - this team is younger than people think - few old guys are skewing opinions

Starting pitching is likely going to be too expensive for the Tigers, but i'd love to see them get a little creative and target guys like Nathan Eovaldi, Ervin Santana, and Tyler Chatwood.

If they can't get a starter than they should grab a lefty reliever, I personally don't trust Kyle Ryan to get a lefty out in a tight situation. A healthy JD, a healthy Zimm, a healthy Norris and calling up Joe Jimenez is just as good as any trade that they could make.

Sell, sell, sell!

In all seriousness, there's so little to work with in the farm system that it may be time to resign fans to a half decade of stinking up the place.

The "win now" model isn't viable. Sure, you have Cabrera, Verlander, Martinez just getting older. They won't be what we all hope they might be even two years from now. If you can get anyone to absorb the vast majority of those contacts... you'd be extremely lucky. To win now would require a hell of a lot more than Rich Hill. And that's (seemingly) not going to happen.

The problem is, you have an owner who just turned 87 last week, and his health is likely marginal, at best.. For him there is no such thing as "rebuild". He doesn't have enough time on the clock for that. For him, "long-term" is next month.

We probably need to resign ourselves to the fact that this is the way it's going to be until Mr. Ilitch is no longer with us. And after that comes a big, big rebuild. At that point there are no guarantees. We might be looking at the late-90's Tigers all over again.

and then hunt around for good deals, buying or selling.

If there's a team that would take on Martinez, Kinsler or Verlander for significant assets, I'd deal them. Those guys will never has as much value as they do today.

If there's a team that's willing to send out a 3rd or 4th starter, or a promising reliever that lets the Tigers move Greene back to the rotation, for a reasonable cost - I'd deal for them.

The Tigers are so mediocre that either buying or selling is entirely defensible.  They should see what the market has to offer on both sides.

Sox announcers shocked Tigers pitch to melky.

Melky hits walk off.

Wish Ausmus would walk off a cliff.

Pitching to Abreu is a better option? I'm not a huge Ausmus fan but I can hardly fault pitching to Melky there as Rondon really isn't a GB pitcher, earlier this afternoon Wilson had no business pitching to Eaton though....

I'd keep Cabrera. He ensures visitors to the park during the lean times, and why wouldnt you want a .300 power hitting designated hitter when the rebuild is done?

there is no reason to sell at this point.  they are still in the hunt and should have 3 important injured players back in a week or so.

plus, they have no potential free agents anyway; like price, cespedes and soria last year.  so if the tigers want to change direction, they can do it in the off season.

There are so many If's that have to work out perfectly for the Tigers to even slip into the playoffs. The health of guys like JD, Norris, Zimmerman is a big one. Even if they can maintain health theyll need to play themselves back into form. JD has been out a long time and Jordan was struggling before his DL visit. Then we really can't afford to take another injury hit anywhere as both our pitching and hitting depth isn't there.

I really think the guy to trade is Kinsler. He is never going to put together another year as good as this one. His value is as high as its ever going to get and he can absolutely help a contender. I think the potential for a real solid return is there for Ian.
