OT: Lombardi Award change and watch list

Submitted by M Go Dead on

The Lombardi Award that used to be for defensive and offensive linemen (linebackers and tight ends too I guess) is being changed to include players at all positions, making it a less desirable Heisman. This is idiotic, I don't understand at all.

Edit: Butt, Cole, Glasgow, Hurst, Kalis and Worley name to pre-season watch list for what that is worth.

sullied itself several times over the past few years on character issues, and it appears to be the best QB with the very seldom RB award anymore. So there is room to move.

truly become an award for the best player. There seems to be a few guys every year that aren't even invited that we all know are irreplaceable players. Heisman has named these guys a few times but it's about 50/50. No homer, btw! I think Pace should have won a Heisman, etc.

Makes absolutely no sense to do this. The award is a block of granite representing the Seven Blocks of Granite of Fordham's defensive front that Lombardi was a part of. This was an award designed specifically for linemen.

In other news the Oscar awards have been changed to include plays and the Tony awards have been changed to include contributions to mankind.

I always dig this award. It lets us know who the great college lineman across the country are. It brings well deserved attention to the guys in the trenches where games and championships are won and lost.  Sad that its governing body  can't see that.

Dumb.  Dumb.  Dumb.  I don't get how the governing body of an award for linemen could change the award so that no lineman will ever win it again.  Seriously - what lineman gains enough attention to win a national honor over a skill player?  Maybe a stud DE that collects 20 sacks among 47 TFLs.  But how rare is that?

So the Lombardi will become another Maxwell - a statistic to help predict the Heisman...
