OT: Iron Man 3 new Trailer is out

Upstaged in a good way by Devin Gardner, but since we're in the "off-season" big summer movies are fair game now, so without further ado:

On a new property (remember, this was even before Spiderman came out) saying "we're going to take this most popular comic that no one but the fans have heard about....but we're going to leave out all the fan favorites in Wolverine, and Storm, Rogue....but dont' worry, they come in the next one!"  Remember, this was at a time where Blade was a big deal as comic book movies went.

But I agree with you that the whole Phoenix thing needed to be handled WAY better. Yours would have been a pretty good take. It might have a $500,000 budget, but it'd be a cool movie.

I wasn't trying to diss the X-Men. They just didn't really become big till I was older, and more of a comic book fan, than just a kid who liked super heroes. So when I was a kid, the Avengers were the big timers, and the X-Men were just a step above the Doom Patrol.  I remember seeing Cyclops in a Marvel Activity/coloring book and thinking he was a bad guy. And then later with Storm with a mohawk as the punk rock superheroes. But after their return as the "All New" that might be the strongest run of any comic for that long a period out there. And as I got to know them more I liked a lot more than Wolverine...Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus to some extent, Kitty, the Beast when he came back from the Avengers, mmm Psylocke...

It's just a different period. FF and Avengers were Marvel's big teams first, then X-Men became gigantic (along the same time Teen Titans surprisingly took over DC), and now it's come back again that they put their big guns on the Avenger titles and that has been the big seller. And right now there's not even necessarily a difference in the teams.

I'm not sure I agree on the villains. Magneto is great, but for as big a team as it is they seem to be hurting for adversaries.  Love Apocalypse...back when he was a survival of the fittest mutant and wasn't convoluted in time travel. And Sinister massacring mutants was classic, before he was involved in the full genetic history of the Summers and Greys.  Which is really the X-Men's problem...they got too convoluted for their own good.  Other than Wolverine being kind of solo, they don't have the individual villains to bring against the team that the Avengers have to go with the more team villains.

And they keep talking about doing a new FF with Millar advising Fox, but I keep hoping that like Daredevil they keep failing and the rights revert back to Marvel. Spiderman will never flop enough to go back (And the first, and particularly the 2nd Spiderman were good movies), but these lesser properties could go back to Marvel and that'd be fine with me. They've shown they do them better. FF was worse because there were small parts that could have made a good FF movie. The casting wasn't horrible, particularly Reed, Ben, and Johnny. They made Reed not smart enough and Ben's make-up wasn't great, but that wasn't casting. And Evans was maybe too good as Johnny.  Alba was miscast, but worse things than seeing her in skintight blue. I'm not sure that the guy wouldn't have made an alright Victor Von Doom...if the character resembled Dr. Doom in any way other than a green hoodie. That abortion would have kept any movie from being good.

And THAT is another classic theme song.

I didn't think it was a diss at them at all. I totally get the Lucas route of "give them the best part first" and then to the backstory later. I just admire how Marvel did it with the chronological build up lately and wanted to see Fox(ugh) do it like that. As far as when what was bigger I'll just tell you what I was around for. I read from about '81- '86. Also during that time I went and read all the stuff I missed from the '75 Giant X-Men(classic team introduced) forward to the point in '81 that I got on board. So I don't know the whole Apocalypse and Jubilee stuff that went on when I checked out in '86. Discovering UM football being on of the reasons I drifted. But I'll tell ya that period that I read, X-Men was the most popular. Wolverine was far and away the most popular single character in comics. I couldn't tell you who was next. Maybe Avengers. They had some decent villians: Brotherhood, Hellfire Club, Government/Sentinals, the Brood, the Warlocks. From what I hear the reboot FF movie is a go. Marvels phase 2 is set with Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Cap 2, Guardians, and Avengers 2. Phase 3 will kick off with Ant Man(I dunno how that will do) and Dr. Strange will be in phase 3. I'm hoping Black Panther will be in that too. There's supposedly a reference to his country in Iron Man 3.

I had read somewhere about a possible Dr. Strange appearance in Thor 2 ala Hawkeye in Thor. Honestly I know very little about his character/ origins but it's nice to see some of the lesser known Marvel characters getting their just due. I'd like to get a Nova movie made at some point, but who knows maybe he'll show up in The Guardians of the Galaxy because he's also involved in galactic defense.

EDIT: why is the reply button on the fritz? this is the 2nd time i've replied to the wrong post when I clicked to reply to a different user.

Also, rather than a completely new post, there was a good article in IGN with some insight behind the principles making the movie and their thought process-

And part one which is a big spoiler where they recount the scene they actually got to see-

I agree completely. Iron Man was more of a B-star in the comic book world before the first film. Robert Downey Jr. has done a tremendous job with Tony Stark's character, and has made Iron Man one of the most popular comic book character around. If you think about it, he was the central character that the Avengers Initiative kind of revolved around.

I actually think that  at the end of Iron Man 3 Stark will end up traveling into outer space to kick it with the Guardians of The Galaxy. I guess we'll see what happens in May!

He has just killed it as far as Tony Stark. I love the quick wit style of the writing, and I love that even in the most challenging, dramatic moments Downey Jr. still says everything in that style. I was worried that as things got more dramatic they would have Stark lose his cool and stutter or slow down as an easy way out for showing emotion or bringing drama to a situation, and fortunately they haven't resorted to those cheap tricks.

Already saw a continuity issue in the trailer.  During the interview of Stark at near the end of the trailer, a man in a grey coat is holding a filp cell phone at 1:02 and 1:57, at 2:04 the guy is holding a smart phone.

I don't really care about things like this, but it is interesting that it was released in a trailer.

I'm not going to bog the thread again by embedding, but I had a question for those really into it about the differences in this trailer. And no, not that it just has Chinese people in it for the China market.

It's a little blurry, but does it look like they erased the Captain America shield tattoo from the back of the Mandarin's neck in this version? I double checked, and it's still there in the latest new trailer regular version, but it seems like it's gone in this one. "Why" might be too political, but I'm curious if others see the same thing.
