OT(?): Indiana locks up B1G Regular Season Title

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but Indiana beat Iowa tonight 81-78. They have locked up the (outright) B1G regular season title. Just glad Sparty didn't win it...

MSU had less basketball success than we did before Izzo...don't tell me it isn't possible to win like we do in football! And you realize we are severely lagging in the success department  in both sports for basically 20 years right? That just may have something to do with why we always want to fire the coach. No...it's not that we've lost to OSU every year but three since the turn of the century in football and they've played in 4 national title games or that MSU has been to six final fours in basketball...we just like to complain.

You keep thinking that Matta is dirty...just like every other coach that consistently beats us. Usually basketball programs tend to hire up and coming coaches that turn into great ones. That's not my job to decide who that is but Archie Miller certainly looks promising. It worked otu for Texas with Shaka Smart.

it's fine that you are happy with mediocre seasons. He caught lightning in a bottle 2 out of his 9 years. I'm not saying I'm more of a fan than you because I want UM bball to be on par with MSU, Duke, UK, KU and UNC. If you're happy with making the tourney 5 times in 10 years and getting past the first weekend 2 out of those 5, more power to you.

"Lightning in a bottle" is a great way to basically say he doesn't get credit for any good seasons and gets all the blame for any mediocre seasons. By the way, Izzo went 7 straight years without a B10 championship and placed 5th, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 6th, 7th, and 4th in the B10 standings and was bounced from the tourney in the first weekend 4 times in those 7 years. All you heard from Michigan fans was how tough it is to be continuously good unless you are a blueblood and how good a coach he was. It's amazing to me how little respect our coach gets

He had 2 great years when he had great players. He's not getting great players. Is he your uncle or something? Your neighbor? Whose fault is it that he consistently whiffs on program changers? Whose fault is it that my 9 year old daughter's bball team plays better D? Whose fault is it that we get blown out by teams with a pulse?

Just save yourself the time arguing. there is a contingent here who don't like Beilein and see his current struggles as proof he was never a good coach, and whatever evidence you may have to refute it will be ignored.

I didn't hear a whole lot of people calling for Carr's head after 2006 is all I'm saying.  Very little has changed about Beilein from a coaching and recruiting perspective; if you want to fire him because he's "lost it" or whatever, then you are focusing on the last 2 years.  Which is fine, but if he bounces back and the team makes, I don't know, the Sweet 16 next year, then I expect those same people to call even louder for his head because he's a year older.

We lose zero players from a team that has won 10, possibly 11 B10 games. If we miss the tourney next year I will be extremely disappointed. Sick joke about Shaq's jock strap too. Hilarious. I bet you had written off freshman Donnal before this year too.

I suspect that Wolverine Devotee might know the answer to this question: How many others have played on men's basketball regular season championship teams for two different Big Ten schools?

What still gets me is that, for a few interesting minutes, Iowa looked like they could very well steal that game albeit barely. Of course, just as I was thinking that, Iowa strings together several awful offensive possessions in a row, culminating in Indiana going back up by five again after some back and forth with a one or two point lead. Still, it was a pretty good game for the most part, I thought.

I was hoping Iowa would win - I don't want them to be too desperate.  OTOH, they've got to be going through some self-doubt at this point.  They can't seem to close out tight games.

Iowa didn't play very well but had chances to take the lead under 3 minutes. Neither team shot well from the free throw line (IU 10/20 and Iowa 18/27).

Iowa missed at least 3 free throws inside of 4 minutes that would have given them the lead.

Jok had a bad game and was in foul trouble down the stretch...his last two games 12 points and 8 points and a combined 7/24 shooting. We'll need him to play like that.

helps our cause..Of coursze they want to win..BUT whats to play for now? They just got eliminated for a title they will be down and we will be desperate for a win and HOPEFULLY Rise to the occasion and salvage our tourney hopes..I believe a win here might be enough but a first round BTT is essential to leave no doubt
