OT - An idea for the Tigers

Submitted by lunchboxthegoat on
Go get Victor Martinez...it will improve your catching position dramastically... decent pop, good average, can hit from both sides.... I'm not sure what it will cost but outside of selling the farm for him...go make it happen.

I'm not so sure about Martinez as a option for the Tigers. Without taking the price into account, Martinez is a defensive liability with a weak arm and many people have talked about him moving to 1st base. Also, I think the Tigers are satisified with Laird's production so far, as he's been great behind the plate, even though he doesn't have much power, he hasn't been too bat at the plate. The Tigers have many needs, but I don't think a different catcher is a top priority.

I can't see the Indians trading one of their cornerstones inside the division. If Martinez moves, it won't be to Detroit. I think that Detroit will go out and get an OF/DH type, but I have no idea who.

I don't know, maybe because Peter Gammons is reporting that Tigers will definitely acquire a bat before another bullpen arm. Of course, he could be wrong and you could be right. After a three game swing in which the Tigers gave up only 9 runs to the Yankees, but managed to score only 5, which do you think is a greater concern? The Tigers are currently 15th in runs scored but 7th in team ERA.

It's just that Zumaya is costing them games lately. They really need another bat unless Maggilo magically found his stroke. Gullien should come back in the next month or so but that remains to be seen if he can get up to speed. The Tigers can't afford to gamble that Gullien will pick up where he left off before the injury. They really need a bat to give the lineup a boost.

They got Laird for defense and he is the best catcher throwing out base runners in MLB. Like other people said, he is going to be a 1st baseman.

He is a poor defender, not to mention it might not be smart to bench laird when he is working so well with the pitchers. He also has no shot at replacing miggy at first. Plus, the tigers have decent enough catching prospects to not have to worry about catching futures. I'd much rather go after a cheaper, lefty bat. Luke scott anyone?

But some combo of wilkin ramirez, ryan streiby, al aviles, casey crosby, cody satterwhite, and mauricio robles. Probably 2 of the arms and 2 bats, not necessarily aviles though, ad cleveland has a blue chip catching prospect, meaning they don't need to get a catcher back.

(cringing) drew sharp actually had a good suggestion today. (throws up in own mouth a little) whew.. okay. try and make a play for juan pierre. he's on the bench now with manny ramirez back from maternity leave.

Pierre, besides having one of the worst contracts in the entire history of baseball, is generally terrible. Yeah, he got hot when Manny left, but you really think that is going to continue? It flies in the face of every shred of available evidence from his career thus far. He's aging, he's not a good hitter, and he's getting slower. I know, he rolls balls down the basepaths before games and he's ultra scrappy and loves baseball and neuters dogs in his spare time and helps old ladies across the street and donates his paychecks to orphans but he's not that great of a MLB player. In conclusion, if DD were to trade anything more than a used Bondo spit cup and Nate Robertson for Juan Pierre I'd finally give in and call him "Dumbbrowski".

Totally agreed. An outfielder paid eight figures to hit singles is not the solution to our problems, we already call that "Magglio Ordonez." The Tigers are in need of basically the kind of outfielder Clete Thomas shows maddening potential to be. If Thomas were more consistent and didn't need to be platooned, he'd be just the guy and we wouldn't have to worry about a bat and could get a steady bullpen arm instead.

So you people think that the deal wouldn't get done because the tigers prefer laird, and not because there is nothing they can feasibly offer for a player of Martinez's caliber? This is fucking hysterical.

I'm not the type of guy who discounts the effect of defense in baseball, but I think in this case the never-gonna-happen addition of Martinez and his offensive skills would overpower the advantage Laird has in defense. Of course, this deal will never happen.

I think it is outlandish to think Cleveland is going to trade us Martinez. Why not instead trade for Ichiro, bat him leadoff and move Granderson behind Cabrera in the batting order. Problem solved.
