OT: Hypothetical - You're A 5* Recruit...How Do You Handle It?

Submitted by Mr. Elbel on
So, imagine you're a 5-star recruit during this recruiting cycle. How do you handle this? What happens when Michigan offers? Would anyone let another school potentially sway them? What about bag men? What do you say in a sit down with a recruiting service? What would your priorities be in a school? Loads of possibilities on this subject. Was randomly thinking of it on my hour-long commute home today. I'll put my thoughts down in the comments.

Commit to michigan the day you get the offer. Tell nobody but Harbaugh. Then take all of my visits to SEC schools. Tell Urban you are going to OSU then back out at the last hour to screw him over. Sign with Michigan.

I like the angle of taking all your visits to SEC schools. But I would make it interesting my meticulously documenting--as much as state law allows--all the extra incentives they offer along the way. Then I'd make it public after I committed to Michigan. (Of course, there is a good chance there is some degree of this happening at Michigan, too. In that case it'd be a case of the pot calling the kettle black, so I wouldn't make it public.)

Tell Harbaugh I'm committed, schedule a visit to these 5 schools

Clemson
Alabama
Ole Miss
Florida State
USC

Take detailed notes on everything that happens to later out and expose those teams. After I visit every team I verbal to Michigan and recruit all the other 5 stars.

Have my entre recruitment come down to one of those signing day pressers with OSU, MSU, and ND as the 3 hats on the table. Lead people to believe it is a MSU/OSU battle with OSU leading and then during said commitment pressers pull out Michigan hat.

Take as many visits as possible. Meet the ladies. Do my best to get Urban to do something against the rules.

I'd like to pretend I'd silently commit to Michigan early and then gather as much evidence of bag men everywhere else as possible to expose them. But in reality I'd probably just quietly take all my visits and commit to Michigan with little fanfare.

I know that some of the recruits and their families have put together a list of things to consider. Many of them are kind of obvious, but here are a few off the top of my head.

  • The kind of football team . . . where are they ranked? What do you see happening? It would be hard to go to a lesser school. However,
  • Academics. I'd rather be at Stanford or an Ivy League school or Texas or Michigan than a school with subpar academics. (Alabama, Florida State, LSU).
  • Distance from family. This isn't absolutely critical, but there is something to be said for being within several hours drive of home. DPJ, Hudson, are guys this would matter for.
  • Program. Some schools just don't have the major you are interested in. If you wanted a particular kind of engineering, it would be hard to go somewhere that didn't have it.
  • Scheme and your skill set. I could see a pro-style QB coming to Michigan. It makes less sense if you are a spread QB. You want to go somewhere that fits your strengths.
  • Depth chart. Again, this is minor, especially for a 5 star guy. But playing time is sometimes an issue.
  • Friends and fellow recruits. Sometimes you want to go to a place where you're going to be playing with guys you actually like.
  • Support system. The network to help you succeed and do well is also pretty important.

1.) Go to the free clinic and get loads of free condoms. 2.) Get all the"golden handshakes" while on my visits 3.) Make sexy time with hot coeds until only powder comes out of me. 4.) Commit to UM on NSD.

Give as many conflicting reports as posisble to the recruiting services just to mess with people. Ever changing top 10 list, new leader each visit, etc.

Commit to Alabama after 2 years of courting SEC bagmen, then schedule 5 visits to SEC schools so I will get paid NOT to go, then I will visit Miami, Arizona St., Florida St., UCLA, and Texas anyways (for obvious reasons), then I will reaffirm my commitment to Alabama after a few more bagmen visits, then I will put out a series of cryptic tweets about decommitting to get paid a few more times, then I would sign with Michigan on NSD while being a secret silent commit the whole time. Yup.

Few interviews, no drama, commit early without holding a press conference or putting on a hat, After committing, take no more visits or meet with any other schools. Three or four years later, I'd handle my selection in the first round of the NFL draft just like Joe Thomas did, without showing up in person.
